Forum Discussion - v. Please Don't Call Hezzy A Cunt

IIRC subforums can't be deleted yet.
Also: making alts to spam more threads and stirr shit is a-ok, but god forbid you post an opinion piece.
We don't have rules, except for when we do.
Facepunch Fixer
This extension does the job.
Is "ignore" ever going to come back
no but you can close your eyes or choose not to respond to certain users that you dislike
Maaaannn, that's a lot of work
This.
No, because you're still telling people where to get it. As above, Walter said that discussing it is fine, that extends to the fact that something is available in the scene, but you cannot sign post people to stuff.
Common sense; what is likely to get us in trouble?
No way to delete subforums at this time. Give me an idea for a new subforum and I will consider re-purposing it.
It's almost as if we have different rules for different subforums which are still valid and still stickied.
No.
I think opinion pieces should be allowed in SH/PD, as long as they don't, k'know, take over or anything.
@Unclejimmema brought this to my attention, I've amended the rules to allow opinion pieces as long as they're not presented as news. I have also created a separate thread reminding people that they don't necessarily need an article to start a thread. It is a political debate forum after all
before getting sassy about stickied rules being clear, maybe you should've checked if that's true? the polidicks ones are pretty confusing
polidicks rules says to contact you via PMs (which don't exist) and "Opinion pieces are not news, don't try to present them as such", which now sits right next to "Threads don't have to be limited to news articles"
Can it be moved elsewhere, or is it stuck to Sensationalist Headlines?
I'm actually glad. People need to learn to block posters out. Especially after multiple events with multiple users and people use the ignore feature for petty excuses as well.
The PM thing is a minor oversight. I updated the rules about an hour ago.
I think it is pretty clear, people in the past have tried to present opinion pieces as news. They shouldn't do this.
hey @Hezzy since ur awake at this god forsaken hour
any word on the ticker?
kthx
Garry has been working on Tub so no further developments as of yet

Then randomly antagonizing this poster over something he said 5 hours ago was even less sensible than I thought, especially since concerns over the clarity of the rules are well founded, and widely agreed upon by the community
I know discussion has been fairly productive in this thread, and at the moment, this post will come off as unwarranted, but I won't apologize if my being confrontational disrupts things, because productive discussion is not something we lack. We've had it every day, in every thread in this subforum. What we do lack is more people working on the site (which won't happen, because garry), and for you to hand over community manager duties to a more level-headed mod, who won't close threads over drama they helped escalate themselves, only to reopen it 3 days later when they've calmed down, as you've done some 30 times in the past.
Opening yet another thread, referencing these things in the title and opening line, IDK dude. My faith in how things are moving forward has only gone down, and this isn't exactly doing a great job at rebuilding it. Why be passive aggressive at all? Why be dismissive of a valid, constantly brought up concern? You should be the one worrying about how to deal with the community, it's not us who should be pulling hairs over how to deal with you.
It's as if we still have people being banned on a moderator-to-moderator basis with no defined line in the sand on what is and isn't allowed. It's purely up to chance and whatever mood the mod reading your post is in. That's not how rules, or a lack thereof, work.
For instance: posts like these ones. (One link per word)
Oh, yeah, and this gem.
On the topic of Polidicks, the rules sticky is useless in its current state. The only thing you can get from it is "pick a good source". Then for some reason, in the opinions sticky, you say, "As always I would expect people to back their assertions up with sources where applicable." Is this a rule? Is it a suggestion? Is it being enforced? What sources are applicable? If it applies to the whole forum, why is it in the opinions sticky and not the rules sticky? Who knows?
Since it's mostly gaming/tech news anyway, the easiest option would be to simply move it to the gaming section for gaming news.
Yo a third news section for tech and gaming news would be fucking radical! I'd post PC hardware news there all the time (I don't want to post it in H&S for fear of burying peoples' support threads).
Addendum:
I know the mood was fine just now. But please, look at the big picture, for crying out loud. This thread is 18 days old, I've been here for 9 fucking years. Revenge has been here for 11. Hezzy, you've been here for almost a decade and a half. FP has never been good at dealing with its users, and that didn't kill it, because back then, forums were flourishing and gmod was massive, but not now. We're working with a diminishing userbase, an old format, no redirect or links on facepunch.com, and terribly slow development time.
And what was done to account for this? The first big step was to go around killing 30+ page threads, telling people "shoo, go over there, we want you to post like this now". To ban discussing the forums in the forums themselves, because apparently the best place for this is... twitch chat? Seriously?
To call for experimentation, but also retain strict thread creation rules and never allow any experimenting to take place. To consistently antagonize the userbase, to treat people who - as Trafficman put it - are no longer 13 year old gmod kids, but managers, designers and web developers who realize exactly how poorly this is being handled. To fail absolutely on the communication front, to perma long time regulars on a whim, to leave us at the point where forums discussion is now expected to end on a tantrum and a thread lock. The amount of bad decision-making is beyond comprehension.
Another thread fated to die the same way isn't going to fix that, and if you can't figure out what will, maybe it's time you recognize that you can't. Stop being so proud, spread your workload and your responsibilities as you should've done a long time ago. It is neither necessary nor efficient that you be the only one responsible for managing Facepunch's community.
I'll see if I can get Feedbot moved to that section also
Has there ever been attempt a site wide Census? I think it would be interesting to see what data we could come up with
there's been plenty over its life time
Don't we normally do a census at the start of each year?
I’m mildly under the influence but this tickled me bone so I’m gonna reply mostly because I can give some insight and thought on possibly an angle that you almost touched on but avoided.
Yes it’s been a really long time since GMod was released. Yes those are some really ancient times but past needs to be left in the past. One must go forward not backwards. I’m seeing a lot of posters being scared/afraid of change and I can aside myself in that group as well even though we’ve beaten the dead horse about it for so fucking long.
To play devils advocate. To keep the forums alive it must not be stale and it must continue to be a positive experience for all of its users and it has to be constantly evolving around not only its user base but also the style and the nature of itself or the meta.
This means sometimes big changes have to be made.
However I do believe that everyone is and should have an opinion to criticise and have the right to stay, leave or slowly change how they use the forum to shift along. Like a herd of sheep really.
Right now there’s a big herd of sheep and that sheep isn’t happy about the forums.
I don’t see Hezzy avoiding it but I don’t see Hezzy approaching it like he should be.
I'm not sure if one has been done this year. May be worth including occupations this time around seeing as the average age is going up. If nobody makes one tonight I'll look at doing it
I can look into putting one together
When I mentioned mildly under the influence I meant about 8 ish beers of pretty strong beer and I had fallen into bed. Hung over. Ow.
This only occurred into my head too and that people go ape shit over any change that happens good or bad. Never ending cycle and that gives the mod team little leg room. I don’t know what it’s like anymore considering I’m not on the team and haven’t been for a while but I can think it’s like that.
Extreme posts tend to be ignored but I do think all posts need to be considered and straight to the point. If you need several paragraphs you’re probably not being straight forward and that’s not useful to anyone except it makes you look cool.
Not saying anyone’s here is of the extreme but we could all be going straight to the issue and not tip toe with it and type for so long we completely miss it.
sometimes things take more than a couple of sentences to explain, and in the case of why some of these changes are bad it's justified.
Yeah, the census is usually done at the start of each year since at least 2014, though we had one in May back in 2013, but to my knowledge, up to now, there hasn't been any census this year.
