Forum Discussion - v. Please Don't Call Hezzy A Cunt
999 replies, posted
when you think, we already have that craptasket x postal fic somebody (xenoyia on oldpunch I think) wrote for that one forum contest way back
I took an idea I had in my head way to far while pooping at work, I guess you could call it a shit-post haha
A metaphor for forum moderation that mentions dicks too many times.
Reading the
I understand now.
Can I blame both?
The sonic thing kiwi mentioned could be one example of a popular shitpost. A hypothetical example of a "popuar shitpost", could be someone posting a "deep fried meme" that is mocking an a user with an unpopular political opinion
Anyways, shitpost is kind of a vaguely defined thing. So, it could be helpfull to know what you would define it as.
The reason people are so upset is that a lot of regulars see Facepunch as their home on the internet. So anything that they perceive as ruining that is going to be met with a shit load of hostility. And how Hezzy frequently reacts to people really doesn't help matters. It just ends up fanning the flames instead. Locking down discussion like he frequently does and the sarcastic or hostile replies to some people while all too often not even responding to those who are being civil and so on, though this latter problem seems to stem from Hezzy being busy more than anything. When he's already addressing twenty people in a single post it's easy for someone to fall through the cracks. I'd honestly suggest trying to deal with those things in smaller more frequent chunks if at all possible.
Though it's also admittedly far from only Hezzy's fault. A fair amount of it comes directly from Garry himself whose reaction to all the criticism seems to have been to become less communicative to the point of even outright removing the changelog. And a fair amount of the fault does lie with those who are outright hostile about any changes and rather than providing constructive criticism are sarcastic assholes who like to fall back on just insulting people.
In both cases though the issue largely stems from letting the hostile users get to them (kinda understandable since the hostile users make up a huge part of the userbase and massively outnumber them) and their reactions to that only serve to piss everyone off and generally make things worse. Which obviously isn't going to solve any issues in the long run. It just temporarily pushes the problem on the back burner where it simmers until it boils over again.
it was funny waking up to see i got banned for that
im sorry if it came across as a personal attack @Hezzy i just wanted to get a laugh out of people
Wouldn't it just fall under treating others how you want to be treated? Why is it different for happening to Hezzy?
I honestly really like Hezzy and I think his heart is in the right place. But I also won't hesitate to comment when I believe he's making a mistake.
I didn't realise it was a meme, I hadn't seen it before. Sorry that I banned you, I thought you were just jumping on the bandwagon with sassing me
I don't have time right now to respond individually to posts, but hopefully will find the time tomorrow before work or maybe afterwards.
At this point arguing whether or not the ban was just doesn't matter, but the principle of acting when you're being flamed. It can't be hands-off when it's happening to others but hands-on when its flaming towards you. It can't be "treat others the way you want to be treated" but also with the implication of "no flaming". I can guarantee you that I do not give a shit if other people on this forum flame me. I also don't think there's anything wrong with calling someone a mother fucker for being a mother fucker. But we've made the rules nebulous and action can be taken by standards that can't clearly be defined, so for all intents and purposes the only rules are don't sass the moderators and don't post NSFW shit.

If we're going to say that Flaming and "Treat others the way you want to be treated" are the same thing (which they are not), can we at least call it like it is? Ban them for flaming, not some abstract rule you can hide anything behind.
This isn't a callout to UncleJimmema personally, this is to the whole staff/Hezzy.
Could facepunch.com please autolink/redirect to forum.facepunch.com?
Can you point out where I've posted "You are fucking stupid" or similar flaming?
Can you point out where someone called you fucking stupid or similar flaming?
why does the front page font look like MSN circa 2000
Ok why is the forum still broken for Iphones
cant view notifications, can’t view my profile, can’t make threads.
is it just never going to be fixed because I’m normally quite chill but this is taking the piss
Uhh, look at the discussion at the top of this page.
To be fair. This is both frustration and pointing fingers at the wrong people.
Would advise you stop shooting Hezzy and be a little more diplomatic and constructive so once the big boss does read this and takes on the fact that the looser rules aren't working then we might get somewhere!
Are you responding to me or are you quoting me in response to him?
All 3 of you.
posting nonsense is ASIC's bread and butter, tho
That is not true.
No, but that's not the point. You thought he was jumping on the sass bandwagon which is irrelevant. Stuff like that shouldn't affect your moderating style and makes you look like you act when it's personal. And it's also something that I don't think is really that clear - you write stuff like this:
Which in turn doesn't really help how you look when you ban someone for posting a silly meme that you admit to thinking is a direct slight on you. It makes it look like you can dish it out but can't take.
None of that is that important to me, though. I'm only concerned with subjectivity. If your rules are subjective you can fit any post in there if you wanted. And, as you've seen with this ban you have, it looks like you're trying to force a post under the "treat others the way you want to be treated" rule because if affected you. If this wasn't your intention, this is exactly why the rules should change.
If you can point specifically to the rules and argue that the ban is just another in a long line of bans for the same, clear reason we've always banned for, then it's hard to argue that you're malicious. It's easier to argue a subjective rule than an objective one. Thus, if the rules simply spelled out flaming as not being allowed well, all you'd have left is to make the case that you honest to god didn't know that meme exist. But right now, everyone sees "treat others the way you want to be treated", which is verifiably untrue considering the fact that a lot of the users here don't mind talking shit or blowing up drama off-site, and think that the whole system is bullshit as a result.
I'm not trying to make an accusation of your character. At the end of the day you're fulfilling your role as the middleman and I'm trying to articulate what's wrong with this forum. If you're going to have a hard time accepting this an the "bandwagon of sass" you seriously need to reconsider the position you've decided to take up.
Is it any surprise that someone who's supposed to represent the forum and adjust the user experience gets called out when he dismisses the entire forum? Is it also any surprise that the use of a subjective rule makes someone look like they're acting personally and irrationally?
And again, with the subjectivity-objectivity - it's not about being a little non-functional baby. Some people probably need the structure but I'm specifically talking about it from the point of view of perception. Moderators getting rid of people under the use of any of these subjective rules is always going to produce disdain, frustration, and confusion.
Is there any idea when Garry will work on the forum again? The ghost page bug is annoying to say the least, and the forum really doesn't need anything that makes it a chore to use.
I don't actually know about what you say on the old rules.
Like before the rules change someone directed one of those "poo in loo" type jokes at me (I think they called me a street shitter), they didn't get banned.
(There are also those other examples of rude things from before the rules change I mentioned earlier in this thread.)
On the topic of "treat others how you want to be treated". Obviously there are people who are ok with having shit flung back at them. However from what I have seen, I'm pretty sure the majority of people who throw out insults (or whatever) don't really want to be insulted back.
But people aren't going to directly admit that. Like in one incident I think I had asked someone who insulted me if what they were doing was reasonable. They saw the question, but just refused to answer.
If they don’t answer your question don’t get frustrated back when they flip at you for being reason. You both look like idiots and you could have been the smarter more calmer one for not replying in the first place.
And yes old rules would have clamped down a lot harder on anyone giving attitude. Not limited to flaming, sass, asshole, rude etcetc.
New rules are just gonna either cause a shit show cause people can’t grow thick skins and ignore and do what I suggest in the first paragraph of this post. Or perhaps people will grow thick skins.
Idk.
but I’m okay with people wanting to fuck with me if I deserve it. But don’t be a cunt if you disagree or want to be toxic.
That my take.
