Depends on your definition of "gone". If you press the button they're still there, but they're kinda invisible. Better hope you're not subbed to anything nsfw.
I made a thread for a little game called Descenders but now it's likely several pages back hidden in a sea of other posts. If would be nice to have a category for smaller games
Is it unreasonable to ask forum moderators/FP staff to behave in the same way they expect normal users to behave in? Right now, normal users are at a risk of being (permanently) banned if they make shit posts when they're feeling frustrated, whereas mods will not get punished by acting in the same way at all.
I feel like the branch threads idea shouldn't be contained in the same thread but simply make a new thread with links in both to each other
Under the new rules, I don't think it's possible for you to be banned for a shit post. It's specifically called out as 'something which you won't get banned for'.
How do hyperbolic statements and obvious jokes that are being enabled because of the current rule set make someone a “terrible person”.
i legiimately want to know and hear your explanation for how what any of those people did makes them “terrible”.
Honestly, this'd be an excellent addition.
Perhaps the powers that be could add a feature which suggest threads according to your browsing habits (e.g. I tend to browse TF2 GC&SS, so this hypothetical addition might suggest TF2 Emporium). These two features could possibly increase inter-thread traffic, though I may be getting ahead of myself.
wow, is this the solution to thread saturation? Obv it isn't done yet since "this forum only" doesn't work, but it makes digging old threads really quick and easy!
Have source selection rules in Polidicks been nixed? I'm generally fine with the slackened rules we've exercised in PD and elsewhere since the forum migration, but I think enforcing article selection guidelines with a minimum of bias and a high degree of factuality were one of the best changes ever made to our news and debate subforums. Shit like this accomplishes nothing of value:
https://forum.facepunch.com/f/pd/btedj/Current-Affairs-3-Arguments-Against-Socialism-and-Why-They-Fail/1/
It does, just a little broken
Worked after I changed my search text, after that point every time I toggled it was instant
You keep claiming that Trek's posts were jokes which feels rather dishonest. It's pretty obvious he was trying to cause a disruption to prove his point, and he made no sign that he would stop before the rules change was reverted.
I think his ban should be reduced to give him a second chance if he apologises, but i can't argue he wasn't supposed to get banned for it in the first place.
While I like the general idea of child threads in lieu of simply getting rid of megathreads I question how many people would actually make use of them, especially if they're not done right. It's more a matter of convenience than anything, that's why megathreads ended up becoming so ubiquitous in the first place. If it requires too much effort to fork a thread and for other subscribers to the parent thread to join in it then people aren't going to use it. If it provides something like this in the main view:
https://i.imgur.com/sJQt7J1.png
and clearly marks that child thread's discussion as parts of that discussion (could add that info to the post header or something) while allowing people to toggle whether child discussions are automatically toggled or hidden would probably help a ton. Instead of limiting discussion it makes it more flexible while allowing each user to tailor it to their own personal preferences more.
Though I think also doing something like Craptastic's example and having the discussion expandable from the forum view (as well as the children threads from that view as well as my example having links to view them as separate threads) would help some as well.
Also a totally unrelated subject but perhaps the ability to pay a coin or so to bump a thread without having to make a post in it would be a good idea. It could help for threads that are popular but don't necessarily get a lot of posts which would help a bit with some peoples' complaints about what Garry wants to do.
In addition some sort of view where we can see all of our subscribed threads regardless of whether they have new posts or not would be convenient. There have been plenty of times I've wanted to go post in a thread (the Awfully White theme's thread or the old thread reports thread, for example) but had trouble hunting them down. You can use search but while it's a huge improvement over the shit excuse for search vBulletin had, it's still imperfect and doesn't always return what you're looking for.
I have no problem with experimenting - crap's idea looks like it has merit. But FP has a huge problem with sunk-cost fallacy and when a feature that took a long time to make clearly isn't working it will never go away because it took effort to make it.
I'd like to give crap's idea shot and I'd also like to chuck it in the bin if it ends up not working. A lot of changes have been made with positive outcomes but just as many with shit outcomes are still clinging on because garry worked hard on them and doesn't want to throw them away. This problem has been persistent throughout FP's history in all honesty.
I like this idea.
Why would he go to a bunch of different threads to spam out-of-context jokes if all he wanted to do was to make a joke? I'm guessing, yes, but i'm making the most reasonable guess instead of one that fits my argument. You don't exactly have evidence either.
It doesn't even matter - even if he was joking, he still made disruptive spam. Garry banned him for just that. Would you rather they not ban people who do that so that FP's post quality actually goes to hell, or?
Hello, apologies if I missed it somewhere but I have no idea where to look. Is the ignore feature available on Newpunch?
No.
This should work in a userscript:
let arr = [
"t h e",
"StrawberryClock",
];
document.querySelectorAll(".postblock").forEach(function(e,i,a) {
if(arr.indexOf(a[i].querySelector(`.username a`).innerText) > -1) {
a[i].style.display = "none";
}
});
Just add whoever you want to ignore to the arr variable.
Plus garry doesn't seem to want or can't let anyone help him with the forum. There are hundreds of extremely talented programmers, artists, etc on this forum that would love to help I'm sure. I know he said it's too integrated into facepunch games to be open to the public or non facepunch employees, so vague suggestions are all we can really give.
Instead of vague suggestions, if you wanted to write a more detailed post about your ideas. How they might work, what improvements/drawbacks they might have etc. You're more than welcome to. With added discussion it can be refined out even. If Garry approves of it, you've pretty much just saved time of him having to come up with /design it himself.
I'm still unsure what his plans are for a private message solution, and last we heard it was mostly an ethical dilemma
garry: there's no rules just don't post illegal stuff
Hezzy: the rules haven't chanced much, your hysteria is unjustified
My hysteria is completely justified my good sir, if all that still holds true then IT NEEDS TO BE IN THE RULES PAGE. The fact that you had to write a FAQ to explain what the rules are should ring some alarm bells that there's something wrong with the way the official rules are written
You're wrong, we still had PCGamer in the old forums because the occasional garbage/spam wasn't as irritating when it was confined in its own section and you could just glance over it instead of it pushing down discussion threads. You must be thinking PCGamesN.
Nah. We had RockPaperShotgun at first, which eventually became nothing but Minecraft mod posts, so it was replaced with PCGamer. PCGamer became mostly 'sponsored articles', which just turned the News Node into an ad forum. That was replaced by PCGamesN who actually posted good articles and interacted with the community, until they started to struggle with money and started posting and increasing number of 'sponsored articles' AND Minecraft mods (which was surreal since Minecraft was in a popularity slump around here at the time where it was largely derided). PCGamesN was removed for turning to shit and PCGamer was brought back.
Still goes to show replacing PCGamer with something else isn't going to solve the actual problem
Can we please just have general-news bots back? I feel that they are heck a lot more useful and less spammy than game bots.
And put them in the News Node this time.
Since you're not forced to use child threads, you wouldn't have to worry about breaking up organic flow.
Batandy should have just made his own main thread for his own release? and mention it in the main DOOM thread? Also if this was done, would hardly be a difference in respect to regulars drawing attention to the release. Making his own main thread would be much more beneficial. Should also consider we may give the ability to lock your child threads after posting them so they'll act like announcements that don't get lost in huge active threads or disrupt the main thread.
I'm pretty sure there would also be a certain level of stigma for making a child thread when there is no need for one. Compounded with my hope a child threads become useless after their specific topic dried up and/or we limit the time a child thread can stay open.
In fact not even sure every subforum will find child threads necessary, or at least naturally not put them to use. my guess of a place would be Video Section, and that is a-ok.
Basically every subforum will find a unique approach to child threads, but you shouldn't be forced to use them and/or worry about main thread's regulars diffusing.
I think literally everyone except Garry agrees that PCGamer is a pain in the ass right now. It's time to admit that it's a terrible idea; it's not just us being adverse to change.
Just fix it please. It's easy and it'll improve everything so much.
I’d like there to be more stuff that mods can take care of, especially if we’re not looking into things like shitposting/trolling/etc.
I’m really interested in community events myself, but I’d like to see what kind of other stuff people might want the mod team to get involved with if we’re a little more loosey goosey with the rules.
