Acting like there's tons of those threads. Literally the only thread with a toxic reponse towards the developer was the Arma 3 thread, and it was justified too because Dwarden acted like an asshole.
Who's acting like there's tons of those threads? I know about one, but apparently there's more than one.
You on the other hand seem to act like he said that stuff unprovoked.
If the thread had ended after his first post, there would be zero personal drama - but it didn't, because some people just felt the need to call him out for disallowing the distribution of BI's models, as if he'd done anything wrong.
Vast majority of 3d model stuff goes on in the creationism corner thread or the discord
You literally implied that by saying "I hope there aren't any more in the future", what are you on about?
Yeah currently it's almost a bit mislabeled.
Should probably put the section back under Garry's Mod or something.
Garry's Mod has built its entire community on reusing content from other games, and that's the plan for S&box too. We should be proud of that because having so many things from so many different sources is an impressive feat, it's like a tribute to the entire video game medium and should be preserved, whatever the cost.
I would only consider removing a thread about ripping/porting content if I was directly threatened by legal action. And even then, I would encourage another venue to keep the content accessible.
Also it's not warez since ported content has been altered to be used in a different context. A copyright strike for this makes as much sense as one aimed at someone writing a fan-fiction or a novelization of a video game. Most game companies understand this perfectly, unless they really want to be assholes.
Well then you misunderstood.
I'll never understand not wanting your art to be used for anything beyond its original purpose. When it's for profit and it's technically not the property of the person who made it, sure, I can see that being a problem. When it's stuff being ripped from an in-dev, commercial game, I can especially understand. But beyond that, why wouldn't you want to see your work go beyond what you did with it?
One of the most baffling things is the author of the Cold War Rearmed mod for ArmA 2 stating that he doesn't want any of it or its content ported to A3, because... he doesn't like Steam. What's the point? ArmA 3's still a resounding success, people aren't going to not play it because that mod's not available for it, and all it means is that someone has to deal with an antiquated iteration of the game to enjoy that content, or replicate Flashpoint's content for A3 themselves
So more disnconnect between how the users use the site and administration.
interesting.
What?
It's fine to rip content from games but when there's a thread that's about ripping from Sketchfab, which many people; myself included. Use to sell models - to see it being used to subvert the marketplace is theft and threads like that one shouldn't exist.
But that's what the section always was about? It's for model/skin ripping for your game.
I feel it should be moved back to under gmod and renamed to what it used to be. It's the only Developers subforum not about original work, and conflicts with the existing 3D Art section in Creationism Corner. Currently a new user to the site could totally miss that we even have a place where all our 3D artists actually are, and modelers won't want to be bundled with rippers. That and we have had practically no new posters ever making their way to 3D Art or the 3D discord.
Not only that, but there's people ripping assets from Sketchfab/Arstation/p3d which is not cool. This is stealing work from individual artists who are making portfolio pieces and such, which I could foresee damaging a job opportunity where work in an artists portfolio could be mistaken as them stealing random stuff from gmod and presenting it as their own. This could even lead to them getting blacklisted from the industry before they ever had a chance, and there's no undoing that.
Last time I was in a thread about some dude creating models.
All he wanted was some help...
What he got was an entire forum erupting over it's contents 🤮
That was truly an amazing thread
bruh doing anything otherwise is illegal you tit
I think you took what he was saying the wrong way.
i feel like this guy might be talking out of his ass.
feel like.
dude if you shared the models for not free you would be sued because that is illegal
Exactly.. brain level -1 bro.
I try to distance myself from arguments like this, it rarely goes anywhere but I'm going to try and come on neutral ground here for a sec.
Nobody is denying that the program you've made to rip the models isn't yours, nor unimpressive - I respect people when they can backwards engineer items like this.
My disdain for your posting comes from the disrespect you're giving a lot of the users on this forum who are industry professionals (despite your opinion that "we know nothing"). Many of who have assets on sites like Sketchfab who don't appreciate their work being stolen, especially when they're for sale in a lot of places too. Nobody is bothered about you ripping weapon models from Black Ops and sharing them around here - the subforum has existed for over a decade that's been dedicated to doing these things.
The line is drawn when you start to affect marketplace dealers & people producing portfolio assets as that can have genuine effects on the stuff they produce.
And no, nothing is wrong with sharing - the difference is if your Pixar & WB thing holds up is they're in a mutual agreement, Pixar isn't just walking into their SVN Repo and just nicking all the files so they can have industry secrets. There's a line of communication you're omitting when you do this stuff to small fries.
Yeah, okay.
He was saying that if you weren't sharing the assets for free, then there'd be a problem. It doesn't matter if it's models, music, maps, etc. He doesn't need industry knowledge to know what is and isn't illegal about sharing content online.
I don't like to get into this kind of discussion but.
@garry
I support the idea that @DOG-GY say let us our own theme in the gmod section to separate it from 3d Artists called '3D Porting and Modeling' or "Ports and Hacks' and add to the rules "Threads over ripping by Sketchfab or from NDA games will result in immediate bans." and "No monetary links" Because at oldpunch we had the modeling section where we ports and ripping stuff from games to gmod and 3d Artists had their own thread separate from us where they made their own stuff from 0 and each of us didn't have any problems. but like Newpunch, is as "I have no idea where throw the gmod guys". They dropped us off first at Game Development and then they threw us again at 3d Artists.
And about Sketchfab thread It should be removed
if you want to examine the geo use the wireframe view
anything else is a terrible excuse and a preposterous waste of time that could be spent learning how to model from real sources.
examining a finished model is not going to teach you how to use the tools to do so or the process of refining a work down to its final form. you are wasting your time if you legitimately want to learn how to model.

not letting you snip the original response.
and please dont condescend about having experience. just between zombiedawgs and myself we have 20 years combined experience modeling, with 12 years combined being paid work. your words betray yourself as having no real conception of game development.
That's over, but are they his final thoughts? If so we're left with two 3D art sections, the more prominent and easily accessible one being in a developers section where people don't actually post 3D art, or develop anything themselves. I'd say that merits more discussion.
Though that thread began before sketchfab implemented the marketplace, it just lingered on like a zombie after the original ripping method became obsolete.
As far as the main argument is concerned, I find it great that ripping allows for assets of old, forgotten or dead games to be given new life. Any requests from individual companies or creators should be fulfilled though. Even beyond copyright it's a question of respect. Breaking an NDA was actually pretty stupid.
And I do feel we should get the Gmod section back instead of having everything cramped up in a single forum.
