Probably not for updates, but for game releases they can. There have been plenty of releases where you could play earlier by using australian/japanese/whatever vpn.
Please don't give Sean your money. I hate to be the pessimistic person but I don't think this update is a good reason to excuse the previous misdoings. You have to remember that he outright lied about the game to how many people's faces before launch. Is it good that this content is in the game now? Yes. But it also took them two years to include features that were talked about excessively before launch. Normally I'd say that it'd be good to give it a second chance but Sean is a flat out liar, and if you keep feeding him money the cycle will continue. And he'll keep making products that are only fully delivered on how many years past release.
so the multiplayer still doesn't work the way it was promised to on launch?
You know he doesn't directly get the money right? tbh paying for the game now is more of a gratitude for the developers who stuck to their guns and tried to fix this.
I kind of find this line of reasoning a bit childish - after all, you're not giving Sean any money. There are dozens of other developers and people involved in this project that haven't necessarily lied about anything. I am all behind voting with your wallets, and believe that there are certainly games that are "beyond forgiveness" in terms of whether or not they should ever be worth the money. The recent Star Wars Battlefront game comes to mind. But if you're curious about No Man's Sky today and give it a purchase, you're not "forgiving" or "excusing" anything - it's much more a show of support towards developers who have stuck to a heavily cursed game for two years. If this was some sort of insidious cycle of gratifying a lying and money-hungry dev, I think you'd be more likely to see No Man's Sky dropped shortly after release. Even if NMS ends up being the best game in the world, it has a stigma around it that probably makes the whole venture no longer financially worth it(keep in mind how expensive adding multiplayer would be when you have no promise of further significant income). But they're still trying, and that's admirable, imo.
I just tried the new update for a few hours on PC and honestly I have to say, at least with the sale price, this is really fun and reinvigorated my sense of adventure and exploration in a video game. The biomes/planets look a whole lot better now compared to release, the new 3rd person view (which is also the new default view on a new game, but you can switch between first person and third person anytime) is great, feels less claustrophobic and the 3rd person animations are nicer to look at while exploring, not to mention it has a better field of view. Optimization is still bad, and even turning down some settings I'd drop down to 40-50fps. It's still playable especially due to the nature of the gameplay but it's so annoying to have inconsistent framerates I actually went ahead and locked it to 30fps just so it doesn't jump up and down much for me. Despite being only limited to 4-players for now, exploring and going around even with just at least another person really does elevate the fun even more and had no issues network-wise with it so far. Going again with the visuals and gameplay, there's a better amount of verticality overall now and the environments look more lush and interesting compared to the gross sludgy clay mess it was on launch. I'm not sure if 50% off is an great price for it but I'm happy with it so far, and I'd actually recommend this if you want that 'first time playing Minecraft' sort of feeling in terms of exploration and adventure
I checked Steam since it's 50% off this week https://i.imgur.com/QGHHnmd.jpg wow.
Guess a rushed game isn't bad forever after all.
I realize this is a joke but no, in the mindsphere no matter what happens to the game in the future, it will always be considered a failure. Even if it becomes some sort of weird sleeper hit 3 years later, it'll go down in history as a failure.
https://www.nomanssky.com/next-update/ Shit, this is a LOT.
They don't deserve a purchase for their deception at launch But I have trouble holding this grudge any further considering they're working on making a game I was never interested in somewhat interesting.
I'm really into the character design they came up with. Its pretty unique as far as scifi games.
i cant believe im actually buying this game
Is this game worth buying yet or
Graphical options for NEXT seem pretty good: https://youtu.be/C_nYqj5Iv84?t=188
Is this really the same No Man's Sky I ridiculed all these years?? Jesus man, kudos to the devs for sticking to it. Imagine how demoralizing it must be to be in their boots.
Has anyone never played the game before and just bought it? If so, how are your first impressions?
Can't believe I say this, but I'm actually interested in the game now, looks like a fun way to just screw around in with friends. The way they handled the launch was awful, but it's good they didn't ditch the game. Though the price is way too high for me (even with the current discount, I'm a cheap fuck when it comes to buying games), but if it goes for 15-20 euro, I'm sold.
Did Sean Murray kill your dog or do you just take it personally when devs overhype their games.
This, I don't fucking get the people who say that WB has no right to go double dipping on Shadow of War, but when NMS rolls out updates for the game, they don't bat a fucking eye.
The difference is that to make Shadow of War better, they just had to remove something that didn't belong in the first place. Whereas No Man's Sky had to have tons of content built and added to the game. If you can't tell the difference in the amount of effort and passion required in just lazily pulling something out that didn't belong anyways, and putting in the blood, sweat, in tears involved in adding entirely new content and systems... Well, that's on you.
Well, is it all okay or is none of it okay? Should we set the precedent that developers can put out half-assed games that can improve late into it's life-cycle, but still screw over the initial investors with a skeleton game? We've already done that with the early access fad.

If all disappointing games received this kind of post-launch treatment from the devs I would be a happy boy
When they should be seeking "justice" from the publisher that forced Hello Games's hand in the first place.
The biggest different between NMS and Shadow of War is NMS is about releasing a half-finished game and actually finishing it, with even more update promised vs releasing a microtransaction-riddled cash grab then removing said microtransaction after milking the whales dry and claim you 'improved' the game hoping to attract the second batch of gullible buyers.
They actually are making it happen. The absolute madmen. And the ratings comeback on Steam? What team would ever attempt, much less actually make a comeback like this? Just goes to show you how bullshit the mindset of early access games being infallible really is. The difference between the worst launch in game history and a successful game is a goddam "Early Access" tag.
I still don't know what you do in this game. is it just a survivalcraft sandbox?
The first hour or two of survival mode is a bit rough but once you get past that the game is extremely captivating. I just love taking my time to explore random locations, talk to aliens and scan wildlife.
bought it, played for an hour, was on the fence if i wanted to keep it or not, and then i read about what they did with gog fuck that lol, i was optimistic, but they do NOT deserve the money if they're still gonna pull scummy shit like that to anyone who doesn't know what i'm talking about, no man's sky next launched on gog, but without the multiplayer feature, and there was no warning of this until "about midnight uk time on the day of next's release" so everyone who bought it there anticipating the update got fucked over, and hello games refused to offer any refunds because it'll come "later in the year" lol luckily, gog is offering refunds, but it's out of their own pocket what a fucking disgusting company hello games is, it doesn't matter that they added a bunch of content to the game, there is NO reason they could have had to stay quiet about such a huge feature missing from the gog version until literally hours before launch, and refuse to offer any refunds because "it'll come later in the year "
