If HLVR is still happening, I can see a HL spin-off being VR exclusive. But then there's going to be the thing of them doing a VR spin-off before a proper sequel. People would be pissed regardless.
I feel like Valve might actually sort of be exactly like Willy Wonka. Think about it, people had all these rumors about what was going on inside the factory and it was all scary and ominous, but still everyone was on the edge of their seat waiting to see what new candy bar Wonka was going to release next. We learn that from the conversation charlie has with the munich who runs the candy store.
And we all know what happened when wonka released a new candy bar AND it has a special contest in it? The whole world erupted and focused on it for almost a decade.
I think we can agree this is exactly what will happen will valve invariably releases their next project and no one will have seen it coming but everyone will ejaculate for it.
To be honest, any excitement I had for Source 2 has been eroded away. Once upon a time, Source was my favorite engine for being so modular, easy to work in, light on processing power, and yet still being able to pump out impressive content (Portal 2 would barely need any graphical updates for a Gen8 port to still look awesome), especially with Unreal 3 having its own problems and Unity just being a fledgling engine at the time.
That was also nearly a decade ago now. While the Unreal line has always been the go-to for game engines, Unreal 4 in particular has become the de-facto standard that nearly everyone uses these days, being industry-leading in nearly every way, open-source, and with a more adaptable and amateur-friendly business model and workflow than ever. Unity's matured a lot as well and remains a great option for lower-end machines and an even more inexperienced audience than Unreal 4. Forget the question whether Source 2 will ever even come out, what would it even have over other engines if/when it actually does? Its window of relevance is long gone; it has been for years. The world has moved on.
I doubt Valve themselves really care about Source 2 tbh, and they just keep working on it since games like Dota 2 and CSGO have been using it/planned to move to it.
Which is a damn shame because Hammer 2's workflow is honestly really cool. It's basically the same concept as Hammer 1, but instead of using brushes you're using meshes. It's like half level design tool and half modeling package. I think that alone could carry it despite the engine already being outdated. Too bad we'll probably never see its full potential outside of a trading card game and VR.
