An army marches on its stomach - some fucking nerd
All though I agree with you - remember that good food is a pretty huge morale boost for any army. In the Norwegian Army the MRE's are amazing, you got freeze dried tikka masala, freeze dried reindeer stew and so on, it's designed to be nutrious, taste well AND have a long shelf life. It for sure keeps spirits when you're out practicing in the field during a harsh winter and that helps a lot. So it is indeed possible to have good tasting MRE's while having the qualites you described.
when you have to feed tens of thousands of soldiers outside the wire in some scorching hot shithole every day it's a whole nother game other nations' rations can afford to taste better because they didn't fight like we did
Most of the American MRE's has a meal that needs to be heated. Protein bars, nuts, etc are in almost all MRE's for those situations. What is your point exactly?
they don't NEED to be heated that is the point
Some countries do have more thought out and "quality" items, but US MREs really aren't that bad. Honestly, the quality of most of the food is comparable to canned premade foods you can buy as a civilian.
you can eat freeze dried stuff dry if you want to
update on the reaction of field troops to the MRE https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/224422/290fc7d9-0aa2-49b4-b125-423821eb147b/Strip_526_Good_Eats.jpg
