I remember seeing this movie in high school. I liked it but it's strange.
I can't watch any of this guys stuff any more knowing that the royalties for my views will go to a scumbag.
A friend of mine that's even more of a Sonic nerd was complaining about how this review barely really even talks about the movie itself?
Way past cool huh
what did he do?
I haven't seem much of his video until now, did something happened?
Not so much Doug, but the people actually running Channel Awesome; look up "Change The Channel", you should be able to find a wealth of info on the whole mess. Long story short, Doug and Rob sold the rights to Nostalgia Critic to this dude, Mike Michaud, because they're both too incompetent to learn how to manage a business. Turns out Michaud is a fucking lunatic and there was all sorts of heinous shit going down behind the scenes. The greatest hits include:
-Hellish shoots on the annual movies thanks to equal parts ego and inexperience
-Not telling anyone that they were killing off Nostalgia Critic and ending the series, even though he was the major draw to the site (which represented 100% of everyone else's livelihoods)
-Not paying people/paying people in "exposure"
-Screwing over smaller creators by not featuring their content prominently, then reprimanding them for not bringing in larger numbers
-Running 100% of their business through a Skype text group chat
-Reprimanding anyone who plugs a Patreon in their videos, decrying it as "e-begging"
-Misappropriating funds from crowdfunding campaigns, not sending out prizes to contest winners, etc.
-Covering up/protecting one of the major content creators whenever he'd attempt to groom underage girls (last I heard, it was all but confirmed to be JewWario)
Doug's just a pawn, really; I feel the slightest bit of sympathy for him, seeing as how that one business mistake now means he's trapped being the Nostalgia Critic forever, since he can't exactly take the character and go elsewhere. I always finding myself comparing him to James (who made AVGN work for him and is living the dream, working on an autobiography and horror film while raising two kids), while Doug tried to retire the character, failed miserably, and is now forced to be the Critic because it's the only thing that gets him views.
Doug's site founder and CEO(right word?) is basically a tyrant of a boss who I believe is responsible of making JewWario's sexual offences swept under the rug even after passing until someone hacked the chat log. He's got Nostalgia Critic under his contract so Doug can't do shit to provoke him. Doug did have some issues regarding planning his own anniversery shoots, but they are raindrops compared to his shithead of a boss.
Why half of everyone ever associated with Channel Awesome just a horrible person?
It's a vacuum for the kind of people who don't have the talent to make it on YouTube/independently. You've got people like JonTron, RedLetterMedia, and James who have the creative drive, skill, and pragmatism to build themselves up from more or less nothing and thus don't need to rely on sheer numbers and scumbag business practices to get ahead.
Tons of people watch stuff like AVGN and the Plinkett Reviews because it's well-made content that isn't too far-out conceptually. JonTron's Flex-Tape video is just him making jokes while watching Flex-Tape commercials and everybody loves it, it needs exactly no help getting views. Meanwhile you've got Linkara (who reviews comic books) dressing up like a Power Ranger and fighting his evil twin or whatever; it's the kind of content that wouldn't have survived outside of a place like Channel Awesome, where people are already there for the Critic.

You've got some good creators there too (Larry64, CR, Brad Jones, etc.), but that kind of environment is just naturally gonna devolve into a crabs-in-a-bucket scenario sooner or later.
Can they really not survive on their own though and are they even doing better under CA? I mean Spoony even did fine after he left (until his mental state deteriorated to complete shit).
I mean to be fair, a lot of that is probably from the following they amassed as part of Channel Awesome. Remember when they got the Amazing Atheist for like two months until he quit?
The reason people put up with CA for so long is because the benefits and reach it gave them was worth enduring all the other shit; once creators like Angry Joe and Lupa and Lindsay established their brand to the point they could throw up a Patreon and get by without having to rely on their relation to Doug, they peaced out hard.
having already seen the spinoff doctors review
doctor robotnik is a fucking rapist
in the end, the whole point of CA was giving the middle finger to youtube and their ad revenue policy (back then) and prove themselves to be strong enough to work on their own.
It was a cool kids club and everyone was going to boost each other and empower the thing as a whole so everyone would make a strong product.
until Channel Awesome became a fucking fanfict out of itself. and everything had to work around the NC. and you had to deal with people you did not wanted to deal with. and then the harassment kicked in, people disagreeing with stupid business policies, characters becoming more empowered than others.

I feel called out. I'm stuck on this CA shtick on my videos and i was never a contributor that site.
Linkara's making just under 3k a month off Patreon so I'd say he's doing pretty well.
At least he, Brad, and Lindsey are doing alright as I think they are the more genually better individuals than most of the CA staff in that site (barring JewWario sadly due to the controversy) as they seem to want to make good content pre 2012.
