Forum Discussion V. "Where's the Forum Discussion thread"

Even though I'm on holiday (again, sorry @IlluminatiRex !) I'll be getting some rules drafted at some point this weekend
Please, if you're going to make inflammatory remarks like this, at least back it up with some examples or don't post it at all.
Makes ya seem really silly
Fuck me can a mod move this to the video section? @OvB
If the reason you banned me was because you think the thread was bad, then why did you give the ban reason as wrong section?
Please stop.

This isn't HARD to understand. You have been here for 5 years and you can't figure out what Fast Threads is for? The only exception is WAYT otherwise post your WHAT or make a Question thread. Your title and thread content contained NEITHER of those.
You're also screaming for attention by making a thread about yourself. You feeling lonely or something?
There are a few possibilities:
I never figured it out.
I figured it out a long time ago, but I forgot anyways.
The thread had seemed like a "post your"/"question" thing to me.
On second thought, that stuff seems redundant.
I had already said I posted in the wrong section.
I had already answered this question in the screenshot you took.
The thread was an obvious attention grab, there was no other reason to make it.
stop
I think this is the most recent thing that has been said about shitposting.

What are the rules for piracy at the moment? Like is it okay to say "hey just pirate it" or admitting to piracy as long as you're not directly linking to anything?
The rules have been changing a lot so idk.
Directly linking is not allowed, discussion is fine
Is linking still okay in the GMF
yes
What did @otis do? I remember him a long time ago getting constantly banned and using alts. Or maybe I'm just thinking about good old Doug, king of alts accounts.
Hey are we going to get private messaging again?
Are there any plans to implement a thing where you can see and manage all your followed threads (like the old bookmark system)?
There's a custom apk I built that removes the pull to refresh frame, in the thread it was reported on the
not until garry can figure out a way to make them so private that not even he could read them if he wanted
The closest I figure you can get:
Have the site store public keys for each user (& accessible to everyone)
Have the site store part of a private key for each user (accessible only to that user)
To read incoming PMs / provide proof of authorship on an outgoing message, the user must enter a Facepunch Private Messaging specific password, which when combined with the site's stored part of the private key makes up the true actual private key. (Otherwise garry could decrypt all messages)
All messages stored in the site, but completely encrypted at rest and in transit.
You'd use PGP.js or keybase's Saltpack for doing the encryption/decryption stuff in the browser.
There might be performance problems on mobile, the site would start storing data that should be kept secure (partial private key), users would have to remember a new 'private message' password and Facepunch.com could defeat the protections by serving a script that actually stole the private password or didn't encrypt at all, and Facepunch could Man-in-the-Middle attack by falsely giving the wrong public key for a user and then having the message encrypted for garry not the intended recipient.
Alternatively, sacrifice usability even more by requiring some program to be installed instead (like Keybase), or making people copy and paste keyfiles & get each other's public keys off-site (a.k.a. why no-one uses PGP). Or make both people be online on Facepunch at the same time & establish encrypted handshake (like WhatsApp).
Alternatively, just do normal plain text private messaging. Or force people off-platform for PMs to e.g. Discord and rid yourself of responsibility.
Garry doesn't want to implement it.
Not any time soon, but I wouldn't rule it out. If we were to bring it back, it would be a system completely and 100% secure and private, probably directly between users and not using the website.
This might sound pretty simple, but would a basic email forwarder be fine?
People would have the option to not open to private messages. But the website would just forward messages to the user's email, so they aren't persisted within the forum at all, you could store notifications, but the actual content can be disregarded. You'd have logs if you chose to keep them
People that have this off could easily opt into another system by linking to more open contact methods on their profile page, like telegram, twitter etc.
A similar email system exists on Gumtree. While they do offer using the website, you can reply to the email and the person on the other end also gets the messages to their email inbox.
Being able to keep one's own email adderss private can be a critical feature to some
which is why all emails from gumtree just look like

I'm fine throwing ideas out there, even if they don't stick.
Offhanding anything to one dedicated service will just suck though for those that don't use said service. Everyone here's gotta have an email, which makes it a common platform.
it's a little bit more secure than garry's thoughts

I don't recall where (or when) he said it, but from what I remember the reason he didn't want to add it was related to privacy stuff (like what you mentioned).
He was concerned about privacy. That's a completely different concept than not wanting to add it. He was simply holding off on implementing it until he had a better idea of how to go about it adequately.
I joined about about two weeks ago and merged my accounts, but I still haven't received my correct join date or gold membership. Is this something that typically takes longer than two weeks? Or did I break something?
Should we request the "optimistic" rating to be brought back?
Big agree, the new forums are waaaaay too straight
Are there plans to add an alert to let a user know that they're banned/link to the post they got banned on?
I was very confused when Hezzy banned me until I found one of my posts and saw the BAN avatar and red name.
