Uh, are you forgetting that the prologue reveals Lady is in the game? Granted, some might not consider this a huge spoiler, but others for sure will.
I wouldn't say that's huge, I'm just glad it's the case.
Dante looks a little bit less like he's on the verge of death in this trailer, but damn he still looks old. There's a lot of hints that they're going for a terrible/forced "Dante is getting old so he's passed the torch off to Nero" although I don't think anyone really wants that?
I don't know about you but I'm excited to play Dante's ghost in DMC7
i wouldn't mind as much as i love dante his character was pretty stagnant in DMC4 and it's obvious they dont really know where to go with him DMC5 seems to be changing things up which is welcome, means he can have at least some kind of character arc again
I see where you're coming from but they're more or less replacing him with a copy pasted family member that's slightly less fun, Nero doesn't really seem to improve on many areas Dante is lacking. It might surprise me I guess I'm just not sure why they doubled down on Nero situation after the general feedback for DMC4 was that the Dante bits were way better
I bought the HD collection on Steam, went straight to 2 after finishing 1 and stopped within twenty minutes. I just didn't feel engaged at all. Dante's silence was off-putting and I'm certain the combat was reduced in difficulty by a fuckload because I never took so much as a scrape in the (admittedy) limited time I was running through it.
I completed 2 in one day back when it first came out. It was seemed rather easy and extremely disappointing. It just is not worth the time. I remember being intimidated and frustrated by Phantom and feeling almost awed by the appearance of the final boss of 1, even over a decade later, but I don't remember a single thing from 2 except for finishing the game and going "Seriously? That's all?" I would personally start at one, and if you dislike it, skip to three.
really, this is all you need to know about DMC2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I92Tgf9yFCo
DMC2 wasn't even originally a DMC game, apparently it was supposed to be some gothic-horror stuff but eventually got awkwardly slapdashed into being a sequel. It's also where Itsuno was really introduced to the series as the director - not from the start, but to replace the still-unnamed initial director after the game became such a trash heap, where he tried but failed to fix it. I shudder to imagine what it was like prior, but it's ironically responsible for 3 and Itsuno's continued involvement with the franchise since then if you think about it.
About the accursed number two https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/185157/a222ba1f-8aaa-4f65-9a21-1d177089e5b6/Je7pjBP.jpg
DMC2's development cycle's messiness can't be understated http://puu.sh/BiCgp/3fd47c9cfe.jpg
Like I can't imagine the state of the game if the version released was after they fixed it.
Capcom struck gold with DMC, so haphazardly retrofitting an existing and already failing game project into something they knew would sell makes some sense, but at the same time it clearly wasn't going to ever be a good game. It's clear that after DMC2 they went hard on making DMC3 the near perfect gem of a game it is. Having only played DMC2 fairly recently, it was really disappointing. I found it harder than it should have been because I WANTED to use cool moves and be a cool guy but the combat system fights you every step of the way. I couldn't find a decent explanation of how to actually do anything within the game itself (HD collection). That I don't think I enjoyed a single boss fight, and when you're playing a character action game boss fights are a fucking priority.
If I remember correctly, the reason for stagnant story, characters, and general lackluster outside of gameplay and the whole game backtrack was due to Capcom cutting at least a whole year of development time to rush it out.
I dont know how you can finish DMC4 and not think it's an absolutely rushed game.. You replay the levels twice and you have to fight the same bosses like 3 times and there's tons of characters and elements that would make more sense if there was more things included in the game.
well i mean you do backtrack in all the games and fight bosses multiple times (especially in 1 where you fight each of them 3 times as well) but i do agree DMC4 is really rushed, though i still absolutely love it for its gameplay
Now you know why he considers DD his baby and DMC his now more benevolent step-child
while that is true, it doesnt excuse the fact that Special Edition chose to add more characters and mechanics to an already half-finished game instead of just finishing the actual game itself
It was more like 40% complete iirc, and AFAIK its easier to add characters and mechanics than to finish it.
sure but that doesnt mean they should do that instead of at least trying to give dante's section some new content if you dont have enough content in your game for 2 characters then adding 3 more characters is probably not the right thing to do
As someone who knew nothing about the games and only knew Dante because of his Marvel Vs Capcom appearance and the memes, i've started playing all the Devil May Cry games with the HD collection, plus the DMC4 special edition. Here are my thoughts: DMC1: One thing that instantly struck me when i started to play it was how Resident Evil it felt, while actually being an action game (makes sense considering the history of this title), i definitely liked this weird amalgamation of gameplay styles. Plot was a let down, but the interesting visuals made up for it. Interesting enemies and bosses, i wish it it had less recycled material (like fighting all the major bosses 3 times, who knew it was a staple of the franchise?). Overall i was pretty satisfied with the experience, even if it had its flaws (said repeating boss thing, the camera being the actual enemy in some situations). DMC2: First thing first, 70% of the camera issues the first one had are gone, but that's because all the areas of the game are big, empty arenas. The most interesting aspect of the first one, its Resident Evil styled exploration, is very minimal here, most of the levels are just straight lines you have to follow till the exit (with the occasional linear backtracking). There are some really interesting devil trigger abilities, but their implementation is not optimal, you'll just stick with whatever ability you prefer and forget about the rest. The guns basically do 90% of the job here, most of the bosses can be killed by just standing around and unloading your weapons at them (including the final boss). Dante's new look is really cool looking and probably the best thing about this game, the rest is forgettable and not really enjoyable. DMC3: My desire for more plot has been answered here, with tons of entertaining cutscenes. The whole game is basically DMC1 redux, forgetting about DMC2's bad level design and bringing everything back to what it was before. Combat is very fluid and fun, and the new roster of weapons is fantastic. The styles are also really interesting, atlhough i was a bit overwhelmed at first. You can't check objects anymore like in the first one, but that's to be expected considering it wasn't all that useful. Too bad for dante's look, i don't like it at all, i understand that it's because he's supposed to be younger, but I think they could've done better (especially, as i said before, DMC2's Dante was so cool looking). I've just started DMC4, i'm at the third level, really enjoying the combat so far, i'm very confused about the plot, but i guess i'll find out. DMC5 looks absolutely amazing, and even my friends which aren't DMC fans are looking forward to it. So yeah, a major critique i have agaist basically all the titles is how they sometimes cheap out by making you fight the same bosses over and over, even in DMC3 where they basically avoided that except for the optional Jester fights, they had to put a sort of boss rush before the final boss. I'm prepared for the worst considering all the bad things i've heard about backtracking in DMC4, but i guess it's better than not expecting it and be disappointed later.

i dont mind bosses repeating at all because that means each boss has a lot more time put into them i'd rather have 6 amazing bosses than 20 forgettable ones it's worth noting though that you dont really get to experience the bosses' true potential unless you're replaying on the harder difficulties, there's a ton of detail to them in 3 and 4 that was lost on me even on the second or third time through the backtracking in DMC4 is atrocious, by far the worst thing about the game
Capcom practically invented the boss rush, at this rate I feel like every other action franchise they have besides Mega Man uses it at some point or another.
In 1 they actually vary up the areas you fight the bosses in as well as giving them additional moves for each encounter. Makes it feel like they are out there hunting you rather than you just doing the same exact fight over and over. Also in the final Phantom fight, if you get him to do his jump attack on the glass roof enough times he will fall down and get impaled on the statue immediately so you don't have to fight him.
Anyone mind giving me a recap of DMC3/4's story? Like the major bullet points? I loved DMC1 one but god i have no idea who this guy is.
Vergil's son
You should really, really play them through. But the cliff notes with minimal spoiling would be; DMC 3: Prequel to the first game Explains a bit more about Dante and Vergils past, why they're always fighting, showing the downfall of Vergiland what gets him in the position to be used as Nelo Angelo Dante starts a business! DMC 4: Set some time before DMC 2 I think??!? New guy, Nero, takes the spotlight Actually kinda stand alone weirdly, going over how a weird cult worships demons and shit Dante is about, weird father figure shit going on here Gives a bit more history to Sparda The stories of them are exactly mindblowing to be honest, there's not tons to spoil. Just play them if you get a chance, though I have no idea how good the HD collection is on PC, I played through the collection on PS3 and it's fine I suppose.
DMC2 is canonically the last in the series so yeah 4 is before 2. We're still not sure if 5 takes place before or after 2 but a lot of us speculate it's after 2.
