I wouldn't carry the penetrators, but I do carry the defenders in a spare mag, for several reasons.
.40 sucks in general, but a Glock 40 is the spiciest meme. Go with the 19 or 26 if you want tiny, and just load up on Gold Dots.
40 is not really a round I would recommend unless you just absolutely hate 9 but refuse to use 45. It's a bit more of a handful to control compared to a 9. Stick with 9 and you'll be fine. Now what gun you get is up to you. I recommend a used gun. Any used 9mm at least from S&W, Glock, Walther, SIG, or Canik.
I only use 40 because my Jericho is chambered in it and I can't find a 9mm barrel for a reasonable price. 9mm is pretty much better in almost every regard (hence the reason a shitton of departments have switched over therefore making 40 pistols extremely cheap)
Picking up a Savage 720 tomorrow for $110 assuming all goes well. Aside from a possibly cracked forend, is there anything I should know? The gun appears to be in decent shape for its age.
For one make sure it actually has a friction ring. If it does check that for excessive wear, and check the top piece of the chamber for any peening. A lot of folks never bothered with the friction ring, so they'd either leave it at heavy or light. If they left it at light there's a chance that folks cycled full brass through it all its life, which his pretty hard on the gun.
Thanks, I dunno how much they'll let me take it apart in the shop but I'll do my best to check it out. For $110 I figure if it cycles at all it's worth picking it up so I'm gonna ask to test fire it.
They let me take it apart and test fire it. The gun is great, it shoots great. It's the three shot "upland sporter" model which definitively puts it between 1939 and 1941. It's so niiiiiiice. Pics incoming.
This video is your friend: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqJ9lk0OUiA&feature=youtu.be I also happen to have an Auto-5 so if you need any info or help then PM me here or on Discord.
Hey dude, went to ping you in Discord but seems like you're not in FPGuns anymore? Anyway thanks! Mine has the original single piece carrier, I don't think Savage ever adopted the speedloader. Sometimes it sticks in the up position under two different conditions. It'll do it when I try to gently ride the bolt down (and will stop the bolt in the process), and also sometimes while loading it. When it does it while loading it's because there's a flat spring that lifts away from the side of the receiver when the bolt release is pressed, and the cartridge rims get pressed up against that spring by the magazine follower. Other than that the gun is fully functional. I need to Acraglas a crack in the forend before it gets worse but it's ready to rock and roll. It's a three-shot model so I'm thinking about replacing the magazine tube with a 5 shot tube + an extension. Know anything about that process?
It looks like you have a 5 shot tube though, if it's not plugged whats the limiter? Unless the tube is just solid for a portion I'd imagine you could just modify the current tube. As for the crack, if it is where I think it is (the webbing between the two sides that sits between the tube and barrel) make sure to do the acraglas then use something to hydrate the wood. Auto 5's and its derivatives are prone to cracking there from the heat and friction, if it does split its not going to compromise the handguard though. They are considered more desirable when they're not split, but its not going to be a game breaker when it comes to function and use.
It's definitely limited to three shots but I'm pretty sure it's the same actual length as a 5 shot. Problem is it's a smaller diameter for several inches where I assume it would be opened up on the 5 shot. This is the best picture I can manage: https://i.gyazo.com/48f37f56dba751d1d449abea1e6b64b1.png It's like they only milled it out partway down the tube. The crack's just where you said it is: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/294604797217079298/510870274426535937/image0.jpg I was gonna put off shooting it til I got around to epoxying this, you mean it's fine to go ahead and shoot it like this?
i like my ppq and it's one of my favoritest guns but it does have its downsides. A very light yet top-heavy frame, ergos that don't quite let you choke up too high, high bore axis, heavy slide, weaker single RSA, and a very fast trigger. I love it all the same, but speed shooting with a PPQ involves a hilarious amount of hackin' and wackin' and smackin arm movement.
Most of my handguns are top heavy. PPQ, 1911, USP40, HK45CT and revolvers in .357mag and .44mag. High bore axis means nothing to me. The only other guns that are not high bore axis that I have are a Glock, CZ75, and a Ruger MK IV. Also choking up on a hand gun is unnecessary if the grip has good ergos, (ie. not a Glock).
As far as shooting yeah, its not going to cause the gun to blow up or anything. The nut at the end of the tube is going to hold the handguard together, why the design even bothered with a bridge like that is beyond me. Well, come to think of it it may have been to prevent the sides from bowing, but that's a cosmetic thing. Finding a 5 shot tube shouldn't be too hard. Numrich has both new and used tubes at about 70 bucks (might as well get the new) Magazine Tube, 12 & 12 Ga. Mag, 5 Shot, New Orig (Fits All 12 Ga.. Now the hard part is going to be removing the old tube. Going off what I found on the internet it could be either seized in place, loctited (unlikely), and some say maybe silver soldiered. My first recommendation would be to soak it in kroil, which is what I used at the shop. Basically try and fill the threads the best you can and let it absorb over night. There are other thread penetrating liquids that would probably work as well. Then I'd put it in a solid vice and crank on it with a strap wrench. Just make sure to give it time, like fine wine you gotta let it age (soak in) for it to be effective. If you find it difficult you could try heating the receiver with a heat gun for a bit, then douse the tube with an air duster upside down to cool the tube. Heat expands receiver, cold shrinks tube, makes things easier to twist out. In the event that it is silver soldiered in you may need to use the heat gun at max setting to weaken it. Not looking to melt it, as that'll also do funky things to the receiver, but weaken it so that it's easier to break. Then I'd use the upside down air duster to chill the tube again and crank at it with the pipe wrench. If all else fails, buy one of those cheap propane torch kits from the hardware store. Apply the heat directly to the tube in front of the receiver, and get it nice and hot. Then chill the opposite side of the tube so as to not melt your strap wrench and try giving it a crank.
That 1 and a half hour video I posted shows how to remove the magazine tube. Here is the timestamp: https://youtu.be/PqJ9lk0OUiA?t=1538 If that doesn't work then it's at 25 minute mark. I've never had the mag-tube removed because there was no reason to do it.
Beretta has stainless steel 92FS magazines for $19.95 a piece on sale right now Beretta 92FS Magazine, 9mm, Stainless Steel Look, 15Rds Unpackag.. Any of you M9/92 boys out there, grab em now.
Cool, I might take it out and shoot trap here soon then. I was gonna shelve it til I repaired the forend. I don't know if I can reuse the spring/follower from the 3 shot tube, the spring I think would be too short unless it's a regular spring compressed. I don't really want to risk tearing up the gun to change the tube out myself so I'll probably try the easy ways and if it doesn't cooperate I'll take it to the gunsmith. I definitely don't have the patience to make all those blocks he's using and I don't have a firmly mounted vise even if I did.
Shiiet.. But yeah, I left GatPunch, because I got tired of all the stupid shit that was going around there.
You think you're tired of it, I have to moderate it it's aight tho
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/294604797217079298/511677468164358145/image0.jpg Ghetto'd the charging handle. It had very deep small cuts intended for use with a glove (it's a bird gun so it makes sense) and the charging handle itself is on the small side so it was painful to operate barehanded. 1/2 inch heat shrink tube softened her up without needing any permanent changes to the handle, and won't leave adhesive residue.
That's an acceptable modification since it doesn't cause any permanent changes to the gun. I haven't done that, since I haven't got any issues with the charging handle shape. You may also find this an interesting read: https://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=216472
I was gonna leave it alone until it actually cut the pad of my finger open.
FYI MosinCrate just got in a bunch of random guns and they're all pretty interesting. A few Jericho's, a bunch of CZ82 training pistols, random odds and ends.
So I'm finally getting my Glock 20 out of the pawn shop on Thursday. ( Yeah I'm dumb, but rent had to be paid and I had too much pride to ask for help ) and I want to go get my conceal carry license. I live in Texas so it's pretty much the wild west and I COULD open carry if I wanted to after obtaining the license but I honestly do not want to do this. So, until I can buy the Glock 19 that I want ( Maybe the Glock 45? idk yet ) I would like to have a holster that'll hide under a jacket well since we are in the winter months now and I'm always wearing a hoodie/jacket. I don't wear any tight fit jackets normally, nor would I when attempting to conceal said handgun. Anywho back to the topic, I keep straying away too damn much. I'm trying to find a good holster that isn't more than $150~ that will fit said Glock 20 w/ TLR-1HL. So far I've come across this http://www.safariland.com/products/holsters-and-gear/holsters/duty-holsters/retention/model-6360-als-sls-mid-ride-level-iii-retention-duty-holster-23319.html but it's a mid ride and I'm not sure how low that will truly sit, I'm thinking I would want something along the lines of high ride since it will need to be covered by a jacket. here's a picture of me for reference if necessary for finding a holster, I'm 5'10 and as you can see (I'm the middle one ) I'm in fairly decent shape. So I don't have to worry about my stomach/love handles pushing outwards on my weapon. I can take the light off if trying to find a semi-concealable full size pistol holster is a bit too difficult but I would love suggestions. Also need a belt and I was looking at the Kore Basics off GlockStore https://www.glockstore.com/Universal-Gun-Belt?quantity=1&color=1&custcol9=242 I like the retention system it has but if there is another belt that is better quality, dont be afraid to point it out. Also fairly obvious question but, should I put the stock cover plate back on? I had an Infidel one since it was going to be a hog gun originally. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/342238/04aed3ec-8965-4fb5-9f92-1bb43d154318/image.png
Put the stock cover plate back on. Level 3 retention is great for cops, not so much for CC. The G20 and 21 are the same size, so don't be afraid to refine your search, and yes, they are difficult to find holsters for, I used to carry one. I have a Kore Trackline belt, easy to use and adjust, but their system for clamping the belt into the back of the "buckle" sags if you have more than a pistol on it. It's only rated for 3lbs. I replaced it with a Magpul Tejas belt which is thick enough for the holster belt clip to not wiggle around and also stiff enough to support everything on my belt. Red River Tactical makes 2 that will work specifically this Type I Holster (Light/Laser Bearing Only) and this Type III Holster IWB (Light Bearing Only) The type I can be configured as IWB or OWB. as far as belts go I've ran a https://www.hanksbelts.com/collections/leather-gun-belts/products/hanks-extreme-belt-concealed-carry-belt for a while now it's held up well and you can't beat the warranty on em. as far as the stock cover plate goes yes 100% put the stock one back on even though you're in texas you get one overzealous prosecutor and he'll have a field day with that
Thanks, I appreciate the help with the holsters/belts. Now for the fun part, being confident in trying to carry a damn full size pistol.Or just carrying a pistol in general, I was always a tad nervous carrying in my car without a license ( legal in Texas as long as it's in the vehicle blah blah ) since I turned 18 but now it's gonna be awkward having it on me all the time. I already know not to mess with it/rest my hand on it, but maybe I'll get used to it quick like I did carrying around my first "large" (Cold steel recon 1) knife.
