Would you do research on trump's administration by exclusively reading his press releases? We had big threads at the time with plenty of factual primary information that are still floating around somewhere. Doing research on a wikipedia article that's only even allowed to cite the websites that were being criticized in gamergate, or going to those same websites is a similar idea. The secondary "news" and the primary sources were largely disparate, though tbh it's really not worth doing full research on now if you never bothered to begin with. Part of the deal with the mailing list in addition to what other people have already said is that having many gaming sites that just pretend to be independent creates an illusion of consensus when it's really just one insular group trying to dictate shit to everyone else. Note that recent controversy about plagarism from that new ign hire, this isn't plagarism but it's a kind of facade of independence that's in the same vein, and it makes sense for people not to like this on the basis of that alone. Also throw in the coordinated hit pieces and blacklisting from that list and... yeah. Wasn't even the only list either.
