Stalin got rid of yezhov becauase yezhov was so good at what he did (IE, making people go away) he knew everything about the soviet goverment and more importantly, the how and why of stalin himself. Stalin even tortured Yezhov by slowly going through the same prodedure with yezhov as yezhov did with other high ranking officials. Like giving them another important title that put them out of their old circle, slowly moving the people around him around to strip them of potential allies etc. All for fear that Yezhov would/could purge stalin in the same way. Which was a well founded fear because there's very good evidence that Yezhov's replacement Beria did exactly that. Such evidence like Beria going around bragging about killing Stalin, and Beria ordering stalin's doctors to give him a few days of rest when he was first sick/poisoned.
And then Khrushchev purged Beria because i think we should recognize the pattern by now.
