Which of these is more likely - the guy with a 25 year rap sheet for assault, attempted murder and burglaries, diagnosed APD for which he refuses to take his meds, with a recent history of threatening to murder his mailman and the cops, did absolutely nothing to instigate the situation and was completely victimized by the calm old guy who owns the property he was dumping garbage on -- or the calm old guy with no criminal record decided to murder his psychopath neighbor no reason?

It's clear that regardless of if oldman and jr were armed, Howard would have more than likely escalated the situation anyway given his records. Not only that, calling the police in front of someone or giving them the knowledge that you will often triggers the fight or flight response, having witnessed it a number of times, and in this case it's not hard to see which part of that response would have surfaced quicker. The point still stands that both parties fucked this situation up, nobody is moving that goalpost, but your tangent that were guns not involved this situation would have calmly de-escalated is plainly, bluntly, flat out objectively false.
