Death Stranding - The Man in the Golden Mask [TGS 2018]

The Man in the Golden Mask's design seems to have evolved from an unused design for adult Chico in MGSV

You know. I really don't care about the gameplay. I'm very interested in the story enough that even if it is just walking, I'd be down.
But let's be serious, there will be gameplay, and it probably be decent if not great.
You don't know what a Mary Sue is.
Yeah, Kojima's last game can be summed up with "solid gameplay, crap story" so the last two years of DS story trailers haven't interested me. At least MGSV's marketing included gameplay showcases over the years to show us why we'd enjoy playing it.
What even is this game about at this point
This game is looking to be the embodiment of every scatterbrained idea and concept Kojima liked at the time he was working, all condensed into a single product that
pretty much nobody except himself understands. I'll admit, it takes a special talent to continually make video game trailers that do the opposite of informing a potential audience.
I'm getting some chaotic neutral vibes from this guy, kinda like Ocelot's relationship with Snake.
MGSV was like the 6th or 7th game in a long running series though, you kinda knew what you were getting at that point
Cut the crap Kojima, what the fuck is this game?
A dating sim.
From what he's described and the little shown it seems like its going to continue off that though, open world environment with stealth and action elements, which are pretty much his forte.
Im not particulrly worried, the guys record in terms of how his games play is practically spotless and the biggest complaints ive ever had towards them are either due to it being one of his very first (MG1) or literally unfinished and a bunch of content/planned content left on the cutting room floor(V)
I dont think it'll be an MGS4 scenario either considering he's been branching into more gameplay focused games since Peace Walker and making cutscenes and gameplay flow seemlessly into eachother since GZ.
Totally fine with that
It’s an open world action game set in a world where some serious dimensional shit happened and death is a better fate than what these monsters bring
seriously guys it’s not that hard. He’s given enough info out to maintain interest but obviously doesn’t want to show everything at once before launch, like he did with MGSV
personally i rather enjoy understanding even less about the game after each trailer, but that's because i really want to see what kind of esoteric and artsy shit kojima is really capable of when he's given complete control over a project
fuck my brain up kojima
What the fuck? This is just straight up fanboy hype. Plenty of companies have put money into games that have turned out crap, even Sony. Why are you so against healthy skepticism?
This shit is pretty much the definition of blue balling.
To be fair, a lot of the “crap story” comes from the fact that a fair chunk was cut from the ending, leaving it all on a rather unsatisfying note.
Theres a bunch of contextual clues you can find in the game itself that show way more was probably cut than what you'd initially thing, like there was almost definitely going to be a Snake Eater style intro using the song "The Phantom Pain", theres even a small clip of a WIP version of it on the site of the one guy who did MGS3's intro.
I wonder what it would have been like without Konami screwing around with the development.
Then it would have been GOTY 2016 rather than making 2015 one of the best years ever in gaming
Kojima has already said the focus of this game isn't fighting. He said it's all about "ropes" that bring people together. I'm not expecting a symmetric action game
Of course. Kojima has never let us down. Even MGSV is the best disappointment ever made.
Do you even know what that term means?
We literally don't even know how he can, he probably isn't the only one.
kojima literally said it's an action game in the vein of Uncharted/Division
we even see Norman with a gun in a trailer
That's all just a ruse, we're gonna find out when the game comes out that it's actually a clone of Puzzle League
Actually you don't play as Norman at all, you play as the baby. Norman walks around entirely of his own volition, while you as the player control when the baby kicks the side of the jar. Players need to learn morse code to properly communicate with Norman.
ehh i'm not really a fanboy though. I'm a fan of kojima, and i'm not skeptical about how the game will play because up till now a kojima game has never disappointed me in terms of gameplay alone. Plot-wise, yeah MGS4 and MGSV were fanservice and incomplete respectively, but they were still fun to play, which has always been true for his games. I'm excited for death stranding but I'm not going to give it any favorable treatment if it feels like a bad game when it actually comes out.
It seems that the idea of this entire game just being a giant cover to work on SIient Hills while keeping Konami off their backs is still valid.
I don't think Kojima is the second coming of gaming either and I think the quality of his work can be a mixed bag at times, on which I think he reached his peak with MGS3 and the rest that followed were a mix of highs and lows. A lot of his fellow staff members really shaped his works as well and usually having him complete free reign results in something both good and bad. And while Konami itself was a factor on the shortcomings of MGSV, Kojima already made some irrational decisions that were blinded by his ow ego and film worship, evident on having more star power like Kiefer Sutherland to look good with his Hollywood buddy like Avi Arad, rather than bringing back established and beloved long-time series veterans that worked with him in the past.
But nonetheless he is still evidently passionate about his work and his own creative legacy, and he does really care on making something worth playing and talking about even if he gets blinded in some of his own tendencies. MGSV was still a very fun game, it combined one of the best aspects from Peace Walker and the core series stealth gameplay and is the smoothest playing MGS to date. I think at worst once Death Stranding comes out it'll be a polished and fun open world action game set in an interesting world but with some messy design and narrative choices, and at best we might potentially see another magnum opus from him and the team.
Putting big-name actors in your video game doesn't impress me, even when Kojimbo does it because he wants to put his actor buddies in his game. I still think that trying to pretend that you have an actor and their performance so you can market their star-power is stupid.
I think a lot of the mixed bag stuff that came after MGS3 has a lot to do with the fact that everyone kept pressuring him into making more Metal Gear when he clearly wanted to stop a long time ago.
Like MGS4 is just dripping with frustration over the fact that it was even made, he fucking hated having to do that, to the point where the team mutinied against him to prevent the originally planned ending where he was going to end the game with Snake and Otacon being executed. And PW/V are really stretching a story that already ended. That being said yeah some restraint would do him some good, but im optimistic now that he's free from 30 years and 9 games of unplanned time-jumpy retcon-city lore. Could be good or bad but i sure do want to see whatever it turns out to be.
