The XM8 is such a nice looking rifle imo, shame it wasn't adopted. Purely aesthetically it would've looked nice with current equipment I think, though obv that isn't a reason to adopt something (am i right hahaha the us military would never do that) anyway, it was recently announced that the Dutch military is going to buy its own tanks again lol Made me think of these images, the 'end of the cold war' effect: https://nos.nl/data/image/2017/03/14/361091/xxl.jpg https://nos.nl/data/image/2017/03/14/361092/xxl.jpg https://nos.nl/data/image/2017/03/14/361040/xxl.jpg
I'm glad it wasn't. I expect it has the same issues as the G36 while offering little advantage of the M16 and M4.
But didn't you see Larry Vickers talk about his XM8 build and how it's literally ten times as good as the AR15 at everything and really it was internal politics that killed the perfect gun tho?
Was that before or after he talked about how he wants Rhodesia to return without the blacks
I think it was in the middle of Ian saying something actually interesting and insightful.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNB_2hih31I Those fuckin' slow motion shots with the entire gun flexing every which way in one big wobble. Like, I get that some wobble is expected out of all designs, but this looks extreme.
a fish can't move if it can't wobble
https://youtu.be/phwDMrau_7Y?t=59 Looks like it's mostly just the magazine that wobbles a bit much.
No, the receiver-handguard part of that M4 stays relatively stable during firing, while the XM8 just compresses all the way through.
Keep in mind that you're comparing an aftermarket solid piece of aluminium to a polymer handguard. It looks a bit more extreme on this gun because of it's carrying handle, but keep it in mind that this whole wobble is completely stable within 80 milliseconds, in time for the next shot. Everything in front and above of the handguard wobbles, but as long as it doesn't impact the performance, does it really matter? It allows a substantial reduction in weight, allowing this gun to have an advanced optic while still weighing less than the M4A1 and the M16A4 without any optics. The gun still passed rugged testing. During actual firing tests, the XM8, HK416 and FN SCAR-L all recorded less stoppages than the M4, with the XM8 beating the other two rifles only because of it's non-STANAG magazine.
Also keep in mind that, as Ian showed in his takedown, the XM8 essentially consists of three layers, plastic on top of aluminum on top of steel. Wobble can indicate a less than snug fit between any of the three, but not necessarily bad performance. The optic is mounted directly into the steel frame of the receiver so in theory any flexing in the receiver will not cause loss of zero.
I don't think you can read so much into high speed footage like this. what is actually a 'good' thing to see in high speed is not necessarily intuitive. polymers are obviously more flexible than aluminium and steel, why does that mean the flex is a bad thing? in fact a designer specifically trying to stiffen a polymer frame so it looks like a metal frame in high speed would probably be a terrible idea since you have to work with the material not against it obviously this stuff does not affect the bullet, which is in the barrel for less than 1 frame, so it's only a question of reliability and durability, which I understand the xm8 is fine at?
I didn't mean to really imply the wobble was bad in any way, just that given the XM8's general reputation and looks, it looked pretty extreme and sorta hilarious. Every gun wobbles and flexes of course, that's how you absorb energy without breaking.
To be fair, almost everything looks wobbly in slow motion. Every tempered steel sword looks like a flimsy piece of shit in slow motion, while in reality they are extremely tough pieces.

Those are flame-retardant suits.
It's chainmail. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/107029/071d2093-a83f-4ccf-9afa-81b9e11ee2d6/image.png
Fire retardant suits are usually more form fitting. Those suits are draped over them, pretty common in poorly fitted chainmail. They've also hanging straight down.
They're also well documented to be chainmail suits. It's been known that they use them for a few years now.
It may be because I'm on the phone but I thought the suits looked way too smooth when I zoomed in.
It's quite a shame that they're using untailored mail. Actual tailored mail is gorgeous, significantly lighter and significantly more comfortable. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/211377/4b487c1f-8efc-4cd2-bf5e-6c74bd3be591/image.png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/211377/88a0ae83-bd9a-4361-a7f3-4b131e9a3889/image.png
Probably so any officer can wear it, making it more cost effective
It doesn't have to be perfectly tailored to a specific person, but basic tailoring to the human shape would make it a lot more comfortable and lighter.
Humans come in a lot of shapes though. It does look ugly as shit with how much is drooping though. Looks easy to grab onto as well.
It also looks like they're wearing it over their normal body armor, which I imagine would get in the way of a tighter fit.
Humans might have different proportions, but everyone has a back, shoulders, elbows and hips.
The only thing I'm really worried about is how there's a major hole on either side by the shoulder, between the cowl and the shirt. The kevlar they wear on top of it probably covers it, but if we're going by that standard, why even go full mail instead of a modernized arming doublet, with only chain in the places not covered by other armour? https://forum.kingdomcomerpg.com/uploads/default/1820/6cb01f99e8155d86.jpg Obviously it'd need to have full-mail sleeves since modern armour does nothing in that area, but you get the general idea of it.
An arming doublet doesn't have mail sewn onto it by definition. It could have, but that's not the purpose of an arming doublet. It is a more robust doublet made to be worn under a plate harness, with attachments for armour. What you're looking for are separate mail sleeves, like these: https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/211377/215dab88-965d-4f0b-895b-9e209588ce95/image.png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/211377/2470116d-33ae-4ba9-a1f0-6914a8e431a6/image.png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/211377/51540239-a797-4b85-aa67-356430918702/image.png
