That's generally a sign of motherboard capacitors failing, since they don't "fill" up enough at the start to properly start all components. If a power supply were failing, you probably should've had random shutdowns as well. Check your motherboard for any bulged capacitors. If you're not incompetent with a soldering iron, you can likely fix it up yourself for a few bucks - capacitors aren't that expensive. Though usually it's best if you replace all of them. I dropped out and switched to another high school (from technical & industrial production) when I was pushed onto a moving lathe by another kid in class. Couldn't get the image of how it could have ended up out of my my head.
Please tell me that kid got removed from the school.

Basically, rm -rf / in Linux erases EVERYTHING on your drive. But you have to launch it with super user privileges (thus "sudo" is used before it). And then the --no-preserve-root argument got added so unaware users won't destroy their OS by accident.
