I saw the writing on the wall with newpunch. It's a shame our little pond is drying up.
I really don't know what to say. I really love this community and despite some changes annoying me, this news hit hard. I really don't want to see it go. It's one of the only sites I go constantly, the thought I'll go to it one day and it'll be gone is depressing to think about. I love hearing what you guys have to say about pretty much anything and it's always been more level headed than most communities when it comes to debates. The sense of community is amazing and I'll never have that at Reddit, despite me really liking it.
the fact that garry realizes and outright states he doesn't understand the forums, yet still makes sweeping changes to it without listening to critique, is in and of itself a terrible business strategy. taking feedback is literally the most important aspect of any job, but what does garry do? throws a hissy fit when feedback is said, realizes in a few months that said feedback was right, and either uses the feedback, or stops whatever he's doing halfway. imagine how much less stress it would cause for both garry and the community if he just listens to feedback and responds, rather than just ignoring/being sarcastic.
I've been thinking about this and I've concluded that there's no way Garry is thinking clearly. I'm seriously suspecting that Garry may have depression, which would explain his dramatically melancholic posts and his general shyness and pessimism.
nice try garry

The reason why Garry wouldn't care if the forum shut down, is probably because he isn't a part of the community. So of course he wouldn't care about losing a community he doesn't interact with in the first place. The only time we hear anything at all from Garry is when he makes big decisions for the forum, without any regard for what the community thinks.

Facepunch is like an old, dirty but comfortable couch. You can enjoy yourself and sit in it for a while and you'll leave an impression. But when a couch leaves an impression on you, that's when you know it's a special couch. I've been coming here since 2008, that's almost half my life. I've learnt so much from this community. I dont have the time to get settled down in a new place anymore, so if this place goes, i'd probably just sit on the cold hard floor.
Shutting it down isn't the answer. That would be a choice that you'd be making with yourself in mind - but this isn't about you. It's about the 330,000 registered users who exist within this community. Facepunch has a wiki that documents our history! I get that you feel unappreciated, and perhaps a more democratic direction would have worked better with the recent changes. I also understand that it doesn't benefit the company. But scrapping the forums based on concerns that only impact you and your immediate professional work isn't the way to go. If anything, bring the issue to the community, and either get them to help you accomplish what you want to accomplish, or find a way to hand the forum over so that this 330,000 community, with their own history (and, weirdly, their own mythology - see Firerain the Tittyking), can persist.
@garry you should be honored that the forum you made and half payed attention to has inspired several people to become game and web developers . Especially the latter. I have no doubt that the web devs showing their love in this thread could take good care of the forum if you let them take the reigns, even if they update it half as much as you've been dedicating your spare time to in the past few months. And there's still Hezzy and his janitor possy who have always been moderating the forum because they care about the community, they don't have to go anywhere if you change the forum's ownership.
C'mon everyone! Lets sing the Facepunch Anthem! O thank ye dear Facepunch Yer better than Reddit Yer better than Discord And YouTube's pathetic. With LMAO pics, and threads with funny discussions Rating your post with the push of a button So raise up yer fists to the face of yer neighbor An give em a punch to say: "Good Luck! See ya later!"
I have been here for over a decade, he’s always been like this. About once a year he throws a massive tantrum but apparently this is his own last straw. A last straw that has apparently come from negative feedback to decisions made in order to change FP into a website that he doesn’t even understand. Like I have to stress this every time; Facepunch isn’t Reddit, it will never be. It can’t be, we would have to increase our population by 100 to even support multiple subreddits. Garry’s understanding of this fact is laughably ignorant. not that he is willing to even read feedback, because responding to posts with the equivalent of “fuck whatever you wrote, I am right” has been his embarrassing MO for 10 years
oh come on lads garry's worked on this forum and he did seem rather passionate with the updates when I was here with handful of other shitposters before the migration. tossing everything would seem like a huge waste, especially when he did consider integrating fpcoins into their games.
I'm fine with this change to be honest, the only thing I miss is the videos section. Although I guess this is pretty bad for the TF2 crowd and people who use the developer section.
Facepunch has been my homepage for about 6 years now. It taught me english, PC Building, gaming and tons of other stuff. I would be very upset if garry decides to pull the plug Reddit is a mess of reposts and tons of karma-whoring, and Discord is just not the same, the only times I use Discord is when theres stuff like E3, and even at those times, I go to a FP Discord. Please garry, don't do it
Feels pretty cruel that two weeks after I make this post, Garry threatens to shut it all down.
Oh boy Can't say I've got any friends here (or anywhere else for that matter) but as a community FP has always felt more... welcoming? than just about every other place on the internet I've been to. Discord is great as a realtime supplement of an already existing community (like we have now) and reddit is probably great from a developer's standpoint - big list of threads, everyone makes one for their own issue, but you can't build a community out of a glorified support ticket list, and any prolonged discussion gets ruined by memelords and their zingers with a fuckload of upvotes which bury other, even newer, posts. So yeah, it'd suck to lose what was pretty much my internet home for the past 12 years It'd suck a lot
He's an early 2000's tech/software entrepreneur who suddenly found more success than he can handle and thinks that everyone is out to get him. It's a surprisingly common issue with successful entrepreneurs, where they act like they're perfectly impenetrable one second but their confidence turns to cardboard criticized, so they lash out and do things out of spite (think Musk or like half of successful indie devs) "Nothing I do is appreciated. Everything I do is wrong." He can't comprehend that he's even possible of making bad choices, but genuinely believes that people don't understand or appreciate him enough. I doubt he's doing this on purpose though. This is how he just how he justifies everything to himself. It's a broken mentality If he closes the forum then I think being out of the spotlight for a bit will do him some good
Well, we really need to get it through his skull that we do appreciate what he's done for the forum throughout all these years. Sure, there's been spotty decisions, but we still have him to thank for it.
I don't want it to end but if it does @ModTeam https://youtu.be/O5zGkqAWsWE
facepunch literally turned me into a girl
All im saying is being mean to garry is never justified and i dont feel bad for you when you get banned for doing it anymore. Ive been here for 10 years and my opinions have changed a lot since ive started caring about the meta. Garry is just a guy and as a fellow human i wouldnt feel bad about pulling the plug on a money sink that does nothing for me but churn out negative coments and insults about my ability to take critisism every time i post. Back off of him and be a bit more constructive. Dont make posts about his character or managment abilities because you arent accomplishing anything by doing that. @garry whatever you decide to do its up to you. Im thankful for the time youve allowed me to spend here.

Well, I gotta say, I'm surely gonna miss some of the faces here (even though I know most of you don't even know me , blame my lurkiness). Still, chin up fellas. I just hope that after facepunch's probable death, all of us would be able to reunite on another place.
By being so goddamn defeatist y'all are convincing Garry that everyone's already accepted the idea of FP shutting down. Can we not do that? It would silly for Garry to shut down something he has worked so much on on a whim.
can the entire site now be conquered by the Garry's Mod screenshot section yet
It'd be a big bummer if facepunch up and disappeared but I understand why he's gotten detached from it. ideally there could be some sort of transfer that could happen rather than a full shutdown, since people are still invested in the facepunch community, if not gmod/rust/S&box
Well there are already several pages of people telling garry not to do that and if that doesn't convince him, then i guess nothing will. Though I will admit that we did kind of blown this out of proportion too much than needed. But it's to be expected considering many treat this forum as their second home. All in all, It's all up to garry and what his final say will be.
