My two cents.. Rejection and anger can be mitigated by notifying users of impending changes beforehand. AFAIK we've never had this in a major way on FP. Perhaps future consolidation, layout/theme changes and ambiguous threats of shutdown could be announced on the front page? Wouldn't need to be anything flashy or visually offensive especially if announced well in advance. Would go a long way.
The whole idea of forums as a concept ever not being relevant is slightly silly imo. Relevance is given by the users, and so long as there actually are users then it's not irrelevant. The thing that might make it irrelevant in THAT way is sudden unwanted changes I guess.
Can videos be unmerged from general discussion It was a perfect fit for its own section, now I have to sift through all this other garbage trying to find anything interesting to watch
^ I just wanted to quote this because of how true it is. (I'm not sure how to quote additional posts) @garry posted: There's a few things. I don't know how necessary it is anymore. You have reddit for forum type longish type discussions, and discord for realtimeish discussions - are forums like this still relevant? Will they be relevant in 5 years, 10 years? Then I realise how much of my runtime I'm putting into it, and realise there's no benefit to it. I don't benefit, the company doesn't benefit, the games don't benefit, nothing I do is appreciated, everything I do is wrong - so why am I doing this, why am I charge of a forum I don't visit, that I don't understand, that I grew out of 10 years ago. If I close the forums down and move the Rust/Gmod forums over to reddit - what am I losing, what am I gaining? I'm not sure how you could say these things unless you're weren't thinking straight. The games don't benefit? A significant portion of the success of your games comes from their discussion on these forums and the various positive phenomena (media, culture, advertising, etc.) arisen from that. Your games, company, and thus yourself greatly benefit from the existence of the community here. You may argue that it is sufficient enough to just move the forums of your games over to platforms such as Reddit or Discord, however as a business move I think that is unwise. You would be losing an incredibly unique part of your brand as you assimilate into such a faceless "community". As cheesy as it sounds, Facepunch Forums isn't just a platform to discuss your games. It's a platform where you have actively changed people's lives for the better with your games and development for well over a decade. It's part of what Facepunch Studios is, and if you deleted it now, Facepunch would no longer BE that, and would just be another generic gamedev company. I think the damage would be irreversible, it would leave a sour taste in the mouths of many of your followers and negatively impact your company's popularity and success in the long run. I'm not sure about everyone else, but I probably wouldn't bother with another Facepunch product and wouldn't share any content or news about them to anyone. As Coldmute said above, I think if you focus on getting Facepunch Forums to a rock solid place in terms of functionality and organization, it will be in the perfect position to boost your future games and software products in a totally unique and special way that doesn't exist anywhere else. This forum is full of untapped potential to synergize with the long term development and success of your company, and it's depressing that it doesn't seem to be taken advantage of. Just as things look like they are improving, we just get stabbed (or punched in the face?) over and over again by what seems like a partner in an abusive relationship. These forums are good for your brand and I think it is silly to ax it and replace it with a hollow shell of its former self, which would just be damaging. You may not see it the same way, but I just wanted to put this out there from a brand/business perspective even though I've never owned a real business.
bring back mapping section please, I actually used that.
Is there any chance we could have a user survey to determine which sections we want rather than having them crunched seemingly arbitrarily?
@Hezzy Why assume people like megathreads more than subforums before neutering Facepunch? Maybe make a poll? Megathreads are great for things like specific video games but awful for things like the entire Videos subforum. I want to be able to see at a glance what I'm going to be watching and pass it up if it seems uninteresting. I don't want to scroll through an entire thread like LMAO pics looking at videos that probably have no relation to each other. It seems like a good idea but really all you're trying to do is reinvent the wheel (this argument could be made for a lot of the recent changes). It's glaringly obvious that the majority of people hate this change, and if you're unsure then again just make a poll.
I liked the subforum tag idea but it looks like it's gone entirely with the recent update.
Merging fast threads and GD was a good idea IMO. They had both slowed down considerably. Videos needs to be its own section. No one is posting videos any more.
Megathreads and Subforums each has their own use
I quite liked visiting the videos section. I know Reddit does have it's own videos section, but it's mostly only just popular stuff in there, and a lot of the time that isn't going to be very interesting to me, but in the videos section of facepunch - whilst you did have a fair bit of reddit spillover - you still had the occasional interesting thing that you wouldn't always have. And regardless, for both the neat stuff and the reddit spillover, you do have a nice thread for discussion about that video, which reddit doesn't do too well. This also leads me to one of the reasons why many people still use Facepunch, it's a nice format and it actually has a decent flow of discussion going on.
I don't fucking understand how you can read the dialogue being made about how shitty and unfocused the subforums are, then somehow get rid of everything including... non subforums? What? Did you literally not read feedback?
Should the removal of the videos section encourage users to enter and post video threads according to their related sections? I think it's actually a good idea
Good god this really is the darkest timeline
Took the words out of my mouth. GD (or just General) feels like to me now what I hazily remember it was many years ago. Great variety of threads. Though yeah, a separate video subforum would be great to have.
Im fine with the whole change except for deleting the videos section. God i keep looking for it and it just feels empty.
Fast Threads should've stayed imo.
It was first on my bookmark toolbar and I had to remove it cause I kept clicking it out of habit. rest in peace
Getting a runtime error when trying to go into the games section. The threads still work if I go into them through my previous posts. Anyone else getting this? Garry, pls no kill forum.

Hey look its a forum
You saved us
Please don't kill it @garry , this place is internet home for some of us.
There is a middle ground between deleting every subforum and having overly specific subforums that are completely dead, jeeze. This is amputating the arm for a broken fingernail. Videos and Fast Threads were very useful. TF2 section was very useful. Read Dead and GTA specific sections were not.
watching you drown i'll follow you down i am staying right be side you
