Why wasn't the active videos subforum enough to demonstrate a need for a dedicated videos subforum?
Especially because the subforum had a very high turnover rate, threads would move to the second page in the span of a day. Really, merging the forums was probably the worst decision Garry has made yet. A choice that could only be made by someone who has never studied how the forums are actually being used.
We'll continue to do that for the time being
the videos sub was rxtremely active, always hubdrends of active users, and threads bumped off the first page within a day or so. there’s not nearly as many video threads being posted now because the sections were merged. Videos threads in gd don’t seem to be bearly as activity. I‘ve barely clicked on any since the switch.
Look guys its obvious that the megathread is a bad idea, but what if its enough to convice garry? a guy who barely comes here. All the evidence we need can be complied in one place. its shitty that we have to make it this obvious and please a person who doesnt even use the forum and makes changes based on knee jerk perceptions. Still tho, if facepunch is already slowly dying due to shortsighted impulsive shit, I at least want the videos section back as we fade out.
At 11:14 AM I took screenshots of what the first page of general looks like to illustrate a point to you Hezzy. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/1303/83c9d4af-b03f-493d-a05d-238bb870ccd7/wew.png (Thumbed cause even thou I zoomed out to 80% it's still fucking huge) I marked every thread that is just a video or came from the former video section as light blue. I marked anything that spawned as this decision (including this thread) or was from one of the sections that got mushed down into general is also just used for videos as a light purple. 23 threads at the time I began this tedious process was literally content that would have been posted to the videos section if it was still open. 50 threads to a page (at least the best I got from a quick glance and I don't really wanna count 48 to 50ish threads again) If we condense it down to a percent like a sane individual we get that 46% of the first page of general is used for posting videos. If that isn't considered flooding that what is? what is the magic percentage that would be seen as flooding to you? Cause if we take the gondola thread and the do you like the song above thread then you can round it out as a even 50/50 between discussion and videos. If you go even further and take in the fact that this thread wouldn't exist and the new video megathread that you suggest wouldn't be taking up space on the first page that puts 54% of the threads on the first page is once again in some shape or form related to the fact that the video subforum and other perfectly fine sections were removed. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/1303/71efcc00-3db6-44fa-9d72-0ae14ede2275/firefox_2018-10-26_11-43-36.png The majority of ratings on the op of this thread is overwhelming positive. The people have spoken, Hezzy. We have said our bits and bobs about this change in numbers that shouldn't be brushed off as a "maybe later, but not now" We love the work you and garry put in when you do put it in. But you have to realize that we aren't opposed to either of you at all. We just want the forums to remain usable and a place where proper discussion can flow without being bombarded with videos that forces megathreads and threads that people enjoy down off the main page and generally out of sight of most people. You are generally right about the crap threads sink and the good stuff flows to the top. But it sometimes goes the other way. I thought about this way back when the news node bot was still posting in the games section. The forums rely on two types of content to prosper. Self-made content (Discussion threads, Modeling / WAYWO content, and Original content) and Out of the community sourced content (Youtube videos, News articles, and Media such as music and what not). The change has forced the out of community sourced content and the self-made content to be mushed together in a unpleasant manner. The community needs these two types to survive. If you don't have out of community sourced content (or you make it extremely difficult for it be navigated) then people who are fans of such content might not want to join. If you put strain on the visibility of the self-made content then the communities personality is visibly invisible to any outsiders. And for your suggestion to make a megathread for videos. Trust me I've been there and did that. Most of facepunch at least seems to enjoy some form of DIY creators on youtube (Michael Reeves, William Osman, EvanAndKatelyn, Simone Giertz, and others) So I jumped the gun thinking that would be the magical solution to all of my problems. Because I didn't want to initially flood the general forums because if you could see the threads I posted before the merge I would post 2 to 3 threads about interesting videos i found a day. Needless to say the thread I made didn't garner much attention. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/1303/f1749fc7-77b6-485a-abcb-5830cd914b85/firefox_2018-10-26_12-00-02.png You could say but "maybe they don't really like DIY youtubers as much as you think-" https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/1303/fdc58d2d-7a5e-4143-bd83-3af9cfa2d474/firefox_2018-10-26_12-00-53.png A simple thread I made focusing on the creator instead of the broad term to describe them garnered almost double the attention in two days than the former mentioned thread. People just simply don't have the time nor effort to go into a megathread if they want to see if content of their favorite youtuber has been posted. It just adds more clicks needed to check to make sure you aren't late. People like simplicity when browsing. People enjoy knowing exactly what they are going to get when they click on a section. and in my personal opinion it just makes the forums look more tidy to have to see [VIDEO] every couple threads. This really got long as heck but I hope you can take something away from it because I'm speaking on experience that most of the threads that I have created were video threads.
@garry
@Hezzy
I don't wanna scroll through huge crappy LMAO-pics like thread for my videos, I want to comment and discuss further on certain topics to my liking. Such thread existed, I took a look and it was filled with random nonsense crap. What I liked in the previous subforum was the fact that I had the choice of looking into certain threads/videos and ignoring crappy ones. Having one megathread means that I'll have to scroll through tons of crap that I'm not interested, and discussion would be impossible. I saw that forum as a video-only alternative to "Sensationalist Headlines" except that it not only contained interesting things, but also funny stuff or random "internet things". Threads with many posts would eventually catch my eye and I would check it. Thing is, if I didn't want to look at crappy meme videos, I had a choice. But with a megathread, I have to browse through pages of crap to find what interests me...
facepunch is history next year anyway. welcome to reddit
this is so mindbogglingly dumb that i'd expect it to come from Garry, not you hez. in case you didn't realize, you merged fast threads and GD, of which most threads get replies every few minutes. that is not, and never has been, the case for Videos.
The only real reaction you're going to get to this post is that now Polidicks and SH will be merged and we still don't have the videos subforum back.
I know you're trying for an easy way to display activity to garry but that one wouldn't work A. it'd mix too many topics, you'll get Fallout reviews next to cooking shows followed by a video on Brexit B. it takes one controversial video to generate a big discussion and drown out other vids C. it'd be laggy as fuck
Nothing good will happen, Garry will just come in here and fuck something else up and not listen when people start suggesting some good changes then get all asshurt and make another spite change when everyone calls him out on it.
It's genuinely baffling to me. He insists on continually making the forum worse and worse, and when people call him out on making it worse, he's just like "BHJABDAHJBAS wow bitching about changes, everything i do is wrong huh" Like, come on. Garry. Listen to someone other than yourself. By this point it feels like you're deliberately trying to drive people off the forum. This recent subforum cull made the site absolute garbage to use, and it's seriously caused a massive cut in how much time I spend here. You know the saying "don't fix what isn't broke"? Well, in this case, it's "don't break what isn't broke".
Sensationalist Headlines is pretty much the only section I browse now when videos got axed. General is a fucking mess.
It's not like I enjoy being ungrateful to garry. I'd much rather he looked at the threads about subforums, went "OK so, you guys want things to be condensed? I'm thinking of deleting the following forums". We'd point to the activity Videos got, say we don't want it to be deleted, and that would be it. God only knows why this simple interaction has to be made so infuriatingly difficult
This change made this site objectively less fun to browse. Maybe the person in charge of site ergonomics should actually use the site and understand why other people use it.
You guys should throw a giant collective tantrum about it, that will solve it!
Yeah, or you know we'll just... leave. I'm already down to coming back to facepunch for 3 or 4 threads. I find new videos through Youtube or Reddit now, and there's a noticeable decrease in discussion thread participation, so I just go to SomethingAwful for that. Guess Hezzy didn't mean what he said about fixing FP on the last page, since he's trying to push the same dumb shit we were complaining about like we haven't explained it 999 times. I'm still trying to wrap my head around why we got here in the first place. Why did Oldpunch have to go? To get this coin system at the cost of everything else? Certainly it wasn't for performance, because it loads at the same speeds and it's completely fucking broken on mobile. What a train wreck.
I know I'm a whiny baby cuz I haven't put any work into this site but my opinions as an outsider are: -oldpunch was better in every respect except now we can host images here which is nice -the post ratings have been changing but are mostly still good, I kinda miss optimistic and useful but who cares -I don't know what to make of this subforum consolidation except to see it as garry and/or hezzy throwing a hissy fit over unrelated negative feedback -If it ain't broke why are you breaking it
guess i'll just go fuck myself
IIRC, It had something to do with vBulletin (What Oldpunch ran on) not being secure to cyberattacks and etc. Of course, I wouldn't say that's what's causing problems such as the lack of a PM feature and the forums not working well on mobile. That's just something Garry never got around to fixing.
I've been on this site for over a decade and lately I've been seeing less and less reasons to keep coming back, sadly.
The sad thing is that Garry would interpret that as other sites being popular and not the fact that his bizarre and terrible changes have made this site worse.
Alternative idea. Make a Megathreads subforum and move all the threads that would be considered a megathread to it. This would leave General open to everything else. So you have LMAO Pics, the social chat threads, and other image dump threads in the Megathreads sub and all your videos, small questions, or other junk in General.
Security is definitely a worthwhile reason to upgrade, but it's kind of annoying to still be missing various features with no promise of them ever even happening and also deal with incredibly poor performance on lower spec systems (I straight up can't browse this site on my Surface anymore, the tab just locks up for some reason). I'm not a super active user but I can't imagine that having a site with genuinely poor performance and a mess of a mobile version is exactly encouraging for people looking to join in.
Well I mean... It's not like this isn't the result of Garry throwing a Tantrum.
While everyone is posting reasons they believe the videos subforum should come back, you spend your time embarrassing yourself.
Videos was the biggest thing we had that wasn't Political Rust or gmod
