In case you're wondering what the fuck is going on with facepunch (recap thread)

I don't think I have much of a presence here, but Facepunch is one of the few places in my life where I don't feel like I need to lie about who I am and what I'm like.
So if it goes I'm gonna feel pretty lost.
apparently the forum does not benefit the community according to garry.
i can bet that a lot of people have and still are coming here from other facepunch games and lurking around seeing what’s new in current games like gmod or rust, or maybe they found the prototypes where they can think about giving you more money. I sure as hell would have never known about any of facepunch’s other projects if not for here and people talking about them.
if you think you don’t have much to gain, think what you have to lose, there are a lot of people have have made friends with complete strangers, power of the internet I know, crazy. I don’t want to see this place go, for me is somewhere to maybe learn some lua for gmod or help someone new who does not know where else to ask for help, or lurking in other dumb threads, best part about this place is the variety, you could get lost on here. Go from helping some random, to ending up on a nsfw thread with some dude sticking his dick in an alien.
please, there is so much to lose here, I think a lot of people would associate Facepunch with a bad reputation here because they basically had their internet home deleted with the only remains being uninterative archives or wikis
Personally, I'm looking forward to years of information, utilities and releases relating to Source Engine modding going up in smoke. That'll be great and totally not a huge bummer or anything.
The threat of closure is what started this thread!
I feel I'm pretty unknown besides a handful of users I talk to every now and again but at the same time I feel like I know a lot of you personally just from seeing you post for so long. This is pretty shit.
bring back ads garry that way you can make money off of us and the forums will have more value
Facepunch is basically my "home" on the internet so to speak, it would really suck to have it shut down.
Also worth mentioning that without the Facepunch community I probably would not have my current job / met all sorts of cool people.
PS: What ended up happening / is going to happen to the community fund?
Well, it was fun while it lasted
Despite it being bad news, I do like that it brought the community closer together in the past day or so.

Ye, if this wasn't a mistake, i might just not come back. Love the community here but now i am literally stuck with only the 3D thread that i care about.
If the forums do get closed down, I suggest we not only make a new forum, but make our first posts in said forum entirely consist of "fuck garry"
How does one even consider Reddit as a replacement to forums. Forums are much easier to follow and keep discussion going, Reddit is a mess. Please don't kill us.
lurker here. this is the first website i visit when i open my browser each day for videos and news for the last 10+ years. id like it to continue so please put the video section back. this website is invaluable to me.
If it does close down and there ends up being a community-made replacement, I submit calling it Re:punch.
I'll never forget my first post in the TF2 emporium, i was showing my crappy "hello world" weapon/cosmetic models.
It's been almost 7 years now, if this place is going down for whatever reason, i'm gonna miss it.
Hopefully, whatever will happen, the community will find a way to survive, possibly by making a replacement forum.
Best case scenario would be to keep things as they are (and maybe bringing back the videos section) and carry on.
As other countless posts have said, this is one of the few surviving forums in the modern day of internet, many people here are glad to visit this place regularly including myself.
Reddit, Facebook, Twitter or whatever will NOT fill the void that the removal of this forum will leave.
Been coming here pretty much daily for many years now, feels like home, lots of good memories. Legitimately affected my life.
All those recent forum updates seemed like a good step forward too, shame really.
Good time to be proactive about a plan B in case the button gets pushed, is there a Discord or something?
Whatever comes after this for all of us, I'll be there, despite everything I like you people.
funny that something awful is currently going through the same kind of thing, where the owner doesn't care/is too retarded to figure out a way to finance the site, although his users are prepared to throw money at it.
Oh, right, that happened.
I'd be willing to turn off adblocker if garry reintroduced ads
Don't like penis ads? Suck it.
I'll be honest.
I used to spend so much time here back in the day. Bearing in mind "back in the day" was over 10 years ago.
I was 13 when I joined, I'm now 30...
I can appreciate that alot of younger people enjoy this place, its rich with content and alot of people have friends here.
But the idea to migrate to say Reddit is a smart move.
I haven't visited the forums properly in years. I've grown up and started to get on with my life.
Sure I'll miss certain parts of this place. But if no one had told me it was shutting down and I didn't have a reason to post here, id likely grow old not realising nor caring.
The Facepunch Forums have been a great launchpad for me and many others. But it's time to move onto bigger and better things.
Inb4 angry reacts.
Facepunch has been my homepage for almost 9 years. Once it's gone I'm going to feel lost.
I don't want to go...
This community has saved lives before. I’m not even trying to be over dramatic here.
i remember a few times where we’ve all come together to help each other.
you don’t get that anywhere else, we’ll never be able to get this back.
Actually, just by @garry mentioning that he may close the forums has made us tell him we don’t want to lose it.
that must show you Gary that you have done something right. This isn’t some useless place if we are all fighting for it to stay.
idk if i'm late or not but garry seems to have deleted all his tweets, except these retweets that i assume are old:
https://twitter.com/joelmichael/status/19856007119
https://twitter.com/joelmichael/status/29294539492
https://twitter.com/joelmichael/status/84882878428753920
That just begs the question whether this whole thing is now an elaborate stunt or has Garry completely lost it.
Is there a difference between the two at this point?

Would be a shame to lose over a decade of internet history. This place has always been a huge driving force for mods and really niche Valve communities like the HL2 Beta thread.
I don't know where I will get any of my game information if this place is gone. Reddit is horrible, there are never any indepth comments and the top 50 posts on popular subjects are always ancient jokes or reddit memes. Discord is still nothing more than a voice/chat program with some nice features to me. I value people's opinions here way more than I do any other place. The way people have always picked things apart on this forum and laid it bare to analyze is something I've never seen anywhere else. You've got people with 10+ years of experience in modding various games who chime in with nuggets of info. Actual game devs visit and are even active on this forum. It would mean a lot to lose all that, not even broaching all of the other non-game related communities.
