IF this goes down and we could somehow make a community replacement, could we go back to vB4? The old pace had a bit of charm to it. It looked good on PCs, it worked on phones, what more could you ask for?
It was so without warning that people were flooding the discords to ask "hey is facepunch down?" until the new forum popped up. I seriously doubt that people don't appreciate Garry based on principle. Literally the main beefs are "wtf this was so sudden and confusing." If he communicated more, before and after making a change, that could pretty much eliminate it.
I virtually never post but I'd definitely stand by everything people are saying here. I've been pottering about here for almost 10 years, visiting pretty much every single day. FP is my homepage, the first place I would check when I got home from school, the first place I would check after college, the first place I would check after uni and now the first place I check after work. I hop into Sensationalist Headlines to see what's going on in the world, I peek into Polidicks to see how the global shitflinging contests are progressing and I saunter into my favourite threads in Games and Film/TV to read some like-minded people discussing the games, shows and movies I love. Facepunch has been with me through my teens and into adulthood. It has played a huge part in moulding me into who I am today. Smartness kept my post quality up while ratings encouraged me to not be a childish prick in the early days. I built up a Steam library in the old Gift Giving thread back before I had any source of income of my own. I researched PCs in the Hardware section, learned about components and how to put them together, eventually replacing my Dell laptop with a custom PC thanks to the help of the users there. Even before Polidicks, this community emphasised the importance of being educated and active in the world of politics; I went from complete apathy to participating in every election with great gusto, encouraging others to do the same. And between the life-altering lessons I've learned here, I've made friends that I talk to almost every day on Steam. I've witnessed the hype of new game announcements and the disappointment of finding out a new game has lootboxes. I've been crying in despair at the news of the passing of legends and crying tears of joy sharing in their memory with fellow users. It may be a shitty internet forum with a dwindling user base but it's my favourite shitty internet forum with a dwindling userbase. It would be impossible to completely replace FP if it were to be closed but I would hop aboard a community-made forum in a heartbeat if it meant I could keep sharing in the thoughts and opinions of all of you once more. You guys are the best.
delete the forum
"what am I losing, what am I gaining?" ME ME ME ME
I feel like everyone has the same mindset on why we like it here and thats so touching and makes me even more upset about his choice words and thoughts about us/the forum.
Please don't go, 13 years of memories for me is a lot to just vanish.
I dont wanna sound like a dick but it never occurred to me that facepunch was supposed to/needed to provide value to Garry or his company. I just thought of it as community to take part in. Like I said in my other post, if it's money he could have said something. I've bought perks in the past and I'd donate in the future, but it seems like we're passed that at this point.
It started as a support/discussion forum for garry's mod back way before gmod 10 even existed, so to him maybe that's all its ever been. Made sense to fold in Rust when Facepunch Studios became a more legitimate game studio. I guess the other stuff doesn't mean anything to him.
I mean, just the fact that this forum exists is a net-positive thing for Facepunch studios right? So why doesn't Garry just give Hezzy full control, or find someone who can and is willing to run the forum in his stead?
It's crazy because just last night I was showing someone the forum and kind of going over what makes it great. He was like, "wow this place really rivals 4chan but without the.. ya know. Or like a more digestable reddit." when I showed him the sense of humor that LMAO pics has.
Loads of the problems I remember seeing ended with hezzy wanting to make changes but couldn't since "it's up to Garry"
That's what I always wanted Newpunch to be, keep the old looks while upgrading the backend
all those posts will be lost in time like piss in a sea of piss
I've been here since 2006 for a reason, it's a better community than just about any other around. I agree with the posters above in that it's basically been my homepage and the place I feel most comfortable on the interwebs. I would be really sad to see it go.
I don't like everything about newpunch, but getting rid of vB was very importnat. Security holes and no maintainability. Don't ever touch vB with a ten meter pole.
Everybody seems to be on the exact same page here so Facepunch is clearly providing something unique and something that makes it worth using over reddit or discord, so this: There's a few things. I don't know how necessary it is anymore. You have reddit for forum type longish type discussions, and discord for realtimeish discussions - are forums like this still relevant? Will they be relevant in 5 years, 10 years? Are we just delaying the inevitable. just seems kinda out of touch with the actual userbase. Reddit and discord are nothing like Facepunch, they don't have the same appeal nor the same function.
I see where garry is coming from but he's really under evaluating the forum's value to his company with every niche title you've released the popularity first spurred from these forums and for a company with several niche titles coming out in the future I have to question why you would want to get rid of something with a proven track record of giving those games traction subreddits for niche games don't always pan out into being popular and if that happens with your upcoming an upcoming title (your cavemen one for instance) then what outlet do you have for free advertisement after you shut this place down? Something you may want to consider before hitting the self-destruct button
I don't really post too much, but I'm been coming to this website for years. I love FP, it's given me a lot of good moments and there's nothing like catching up on my favorite threads after a long day of work. Reddit, and other sites just don't click with me like FP has. Some previous posts have mentioned money, and I too would honestly be willing to donate if it means keeping FP alive. I thought NewPunch was really coming along nicely, and thought the subforums were in a nice comfortable spot. I really hope this doesn't mean the end of FP, I love this site and all it's users too much.
Reddit and discord aren't anywhere near the same as this site. Reddit is an echo chamber and you never feel like you're having a conversation with people, Discord is way too fast to be able to just sit back and read through unlike Facepunch. There is no alternative to this place, and that's what has me frustrated and annoyed at this place being possibly shut down.
Don't kill it, I've been here for 12 other years and I don't know where else to go to fart and masturbate man.
Hezzy is an employee of Garry right? Why doesn't Garry just make his job forum administratior, if Hezzy doesn't know web development there's plenty of fellows here for that.
Yeah Reddit and other places just aren't the same. This place is like any of those gaming specific forum boards with a userbase of like 15 active people, except it's more like 150 people or something and it's been going strong for over 10 years without even being close to dying.
Facepunch's whole appeal is that it's a long running semi-tight knit community. It's already unique by that virtue alone. I usually find Garry's fuckery pretty funny and don't care about changes to the forum but I'd be bummed for it to just be shut down. I've been here since I was like 14.. I know some of the people here better than I know some of my irl social circle! Reddit might allow the same format of discussion but you can't maintain a close community on a site with a million fucking people. To me FP is the last bastion of the old, pre-Facebook internet forum culture, at least that I have any attachment to. It'd be a significant loss imo
I'm more of a lurker than a poster, and I'm probably just repeating what's already been said but I love this place. I love just reading through the threads that interest me and posting something of my own every blue moon. I check the site every day, even if its just briefly before I get on with what I had planned for the day. If it shut down I wouldn't really be sure where else I could frequent.
Still can't believe it's been 12 years since I first joined.
I guess since we're all sharing our feelings about Facepunch, the majority of the posts here have already summed up how i feel about this place and how much it sucks that it's probably gonna be shut down, so for me to type up some big heartfelt post at this point would basically be repeating what's already been said But i will say that even though i've been lurking here for the most part for nearly 10 years, it's been a pretty good 10 years that i have seen from this community, it's pretty chill, mature, and full of creative people I don't know what's going on in Garry's life right now that may have influenced him to come to this decision, but i hope that he changes his mind before he actually pulls the plug Facepunch has been one of two communities/message boards that i ever cared to be active in and even be a small part of, so to see it come to such an end is pretty sad and disappointing, especially while it's still so active and relevant
I'll miss yall if it happens, I'd give a list of posters who are of especial importance to me but it'd be too long. You're all excellent.
Anyone got a link to the FP discord?
I'm not the most active user, but damn I would hate to see this place go. There are very few things that have remained consistent in the 7 years since I joined, but I always kept coming back here. If it does all go down, thanks for the good times
