In case you're wondering what the fuck is going on with facepunch (recap thread)

Garry, you will probably not read this, but don't try to reinvent the wheel. You have something that worked, that works and changing it might even turn what you don't want: another reddit or discord.
The redesign really killed my enjoyment of this site because of the lack of popular/read threads, that being said though I would be really sad to see the site go. It's been my homepage for 8+ years and what 8 would consider my home on the internet.
I really feel handing the controller off to someone else might be a good idea. It seems like there are a lot of additions to the site the everyone agrees are needed that are just not being added, and I think including them might make it so old users enjoy the site more and make them actually use it to the same extent again.
Ah gosh, this is really something else to hear. I've been lurking these forums for about 6-8 years now (more or less), and I can't begin to state how much I love this forum. Sure, I'm not the most active user, my name isn't even gold, but coming here every day to read up on discussions and learn new things and get new perspectives on topics I was interested in was one of the best parts about this forum. It was so different from your standard forum and I haven't seen a community quite like this in some time.
It'd be a damn shame to see it go. It's about more than profit or exposure at this point. It's a community of its own. I hope Garry recognizes that, or at least hands the forum off to a party interested in running it.
Why merge videos and fast threads into general? Do you want this forum to become a disorganised mess to drive people away from it so you can make your decision to shut it down, despite it being a place where people like myself go on a daily basis to discuss games and find out about shit? I really don't understand what this latest change was meant to achieve but if my guess about it being to drive people away because it's cluttered, then good job, you're successfully heading in that direction.
This place is like my internet home, its where I go to unwind and relax.
This is kinda scary.
It would be crazy to have this place shutdown. I visit this forum pretty much everyday and have done so for around 13 years. Before popular threads died it was my access to world news, gaming updates, basically anything of interest. I've been a long time lurker and mainly stay viewing the LMAO pics threads but I couldn't imagine losing whats basically my internet home.
Well guys, if it'll ever come to that, I want you all to know that I had a good time here.
I was not only able to expose my opinions on ... stuff to other people, but I also had several civilized and interesting discusions, which I think it's the best you could ask from any board on today's Internet.
Thanks again.
I don't want to this forum to go away, please.
Where else am I going to laugh at funny shit, when mostly everywhere else is extremely unfunny?
Even if Twitter can give me a good chuckle or two, and YouTube being my main source of entertainment, there's still always a weird disconnect from those sites.
They just don't feel like communities like how this one does.
Basically this, I overlooked this post but upon reading it, it sums up what I'm thinking, Garry went into baby mode about making changes that nobody actually fucking asked for and wasn't appreciative about, yeah no shit nobody's going to appreciate you fucking up a community that a lot of us come back to every day, you think because you can make these changes, that means you should do? Stop it.
I almost agree with you, but consider how many of us bought his mod and his standalone game.
We've absolutely been a great help to him, and we've helped enable him to grow further as a game developer.
I lurk way more than I post but I've had Facepunch as my homepage for the 8 years I've been a member and losing this place would genuinely leave a great big void in daily internet life for me, and many others I suspect.
Facepunch is way more than just a 'forum', it's a collective, a community; we have our own in-jokes/shitposts/memes that you just don't find emerging on other platforms. Some of the funniest stuff happens here, and we celebrate it with things like Thread of the Year and all that. There's such a wide array of different subforums, some I've never clicked through to in my life but people use them and that's great! There's still life in this old gal and I think she has the staying power to last for years to come. It'd genuinely be a huge loss to have it shut down.
FP is the only sane place left on the internet please dont disappear
Been here 12 years now. All I have to say is that it's a shame to see the forum in this state of uncertainty. There's websites that do social shit better now out there, but it's hard to beat the community here.
mda
Yeah, I basically have nothing left of the internet except for Youtube, which is pretty heavily corrupted as it is. This is really the only place that (despite visual and backend tweaks) has not changed at all.
Goodbye, internet
wasnt facepunch originally just an sa clone? go back to that. stop trying to fix what ain't broke.
Hope it doesn't happen, but if it does, it's been one hell of a ride.
I rarely post but I've been lurking almost every day for 11-12 years now. That's almost half my life, Jesus.
Regardless what happens, I'm thankful for this place and what it has been. Cheers!
No video's section? no fast threads? this shit is why I have trust issues, @garry might not have used the forums for a while but damn, there's tonnes of us who have been here 8+ years who have consistently used this place as their chill out zone after school/uni and work. I've never looked at another forum in my life for lack of needing too, this community is the only e-family I've had and have never thought about having to migrate to somewhere else just so I can see funny pictures/videos and the world news with the same people I've been with since I was 13. I thought we'd all end up getting past our 50's and still be posting on facepunch.
I'll buy the forums off ya for 5 big ones if you don't need it anymore
I frequently use Facepunch to catch up on the latest news, as well as to chat about my favorite games. I use this forum every day as part of my daily routine, I honestly don't know what I'd do without it.
I still don't understand garry saying these forums don't add value to the company, it pretty much guarantees that new niche titles are going to receive day one discussion and members usually carry the conversation from here onto other platforms (not the other way around)
so you're practically entertaining the idea of amputating something that starts immediate discussions behind your games in favor of doing what other studios do (which is praying that they get any form of day one traction)
Have you seen Steam lately? So many titles on there that there is no guarantee Facepunch's indie tier games are going to stick out at all. At least with these forums you know people are going to notice that they're released and begin discussing them.
I've been here since I was a dumb kid nooo
I will try to make the last few days on FP something I remember.
I'm not entirely sure how you can look at this forum and see it as outdated or useless unless you simply don't use/view it enough. There is a wealth of knowledge collected and available in such a way that is becoming harder to find lately.
It's extremely easy to navigate and everything (even with the recent changes) is structured better than any other forum I've seen. It's easy to actually keep up with everything that goes on in here compared to twitter where you'd be scrolling for ages before anything interesting or relevant appears or reddit which is just a shitheap especially due to the upvote system.
I know it's a little bullshit to throw in like this given I didn't post much on my old account nor on this one but the utility of the forum over the past 12 years of being here has been invaluable to everyone not just me
Would specifically like to highlight the folks that keep the news subforums as up to date as they have done. Sites that can collate as much news as timely as this one are far and few between. Not to mention how it's usually always news relevant to everyone's interests both big and small. These people crawl through various news feeds to find the most interesting and relevant articles possible and update them accordingly in a way that simply isn't done anywhere else. Similar commendations are applicable to most of the subforums on here, it's not easy cooking up megathreads and updating as often as people do.
Frankly, if it's causing you a personal loss of some sort then hand over the keys to someone with the drive to keep it going.
I don't gain anything from it
Just add a fucking banner advert to the bottom of each page, congrats now you gain something
Yeah been lurking here for like 10 years, LMAO pics has always been my favorite place to visit as it usually has something that gets a good laugh out of me. On top of that you guys have posted content creators that I have been following for years now that I just don't know if I would have found otherwise like Redlettermedia.
It be a shame to lose something that's been part of a good chunk of my life, and current daily routine. Its the first tab I open when I get home. Other forms just don't compare to what is found on here.
If Facepunch went, I wouldn't go to reddit for Facepunch. I would just find another forum to replace it. I don't use reddit like that.
To play devil's advocate a lot of users here probably also use an ad blocker.
I think garry would be nowhere without this community. individually he owes us nothing, since we individually have already gotten what we've paid for. but as a community he owes us the world.
imagine for a moment that garrys mod sold only a couple dozen copies. do you think garry would be able to pursue the passion projects he's working on now? I think most likely no, he would be working a boring 9 to 5 like the rest of us. if it weren't for the literal millions of dollars he's made off of a game that frankly wouldn't be worth the sticker price if it weren't for the community around it, he would almost certainly be a nobody, and the idea of facepunch studios, facepunch forums, rust, and all that would be just that, an idea. an idea that could never come to fruition.
now I personally dont expect that debt to ever be repaid. I dont particularly care to have it repaid. all I want in return is some common fucking decency when it comes to addressing concerns within the community. all he has to do is quit with the "dont like it, fuck off" attitude he's been displaying. at least give us a "maybe sometime down the line" instead of "lol it's just a forum you nerds either live with it or go somewhere else"
At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if Garry were implementing these moronic changes in the attempt to push people away from the forums. Why did he even feel the need to shove 3 sub forums into 1 in the first place? I can't think of any other reason than to just piss people off and make them leave.
