fucked with ratings, please give me your thoughts: Knockout!
Big improvement, some nitpicks:
The non-mouseover opacity seems a bit to low
It would be nice if there was a way to re-rate a post without reloading the page (other than tapping on an already existing rating)
I like how FP hides the whole bar until you mouseover the post, but I understand you probably didn't do that to make it more obvious on mobile
Not sure about the sad rating, maybe it will grow on me
Love to test them but QA is still absolutely buttfucked for me on Firefox.
Can you make the mouseover thing for the whole post instead of just the ratings bar? I want to see the ratings before I click them without having to turn my brightness up.
on newpunch it doesn't even appear, so i didnt want to make it too jarring, see this:
but didnt you say you thought the opacity was too low? should we not show at all/always show?
very open to suggestions, check out icons8
Preferably it'd behave something like this imo, at least on desktop

Maybe always show on mobile though because not having a cursor to mouseover with might make it a little less intuitive to some, but I guess I can only speak for myself
This one doesn't look to bad imo

Can you consider making as many features as you can think of toggle-able in an options menu? The ratings appearing on mouseover only is a good example for instance.
every toggleable option adds a bit of overhead, so it has to be weighed. a few kilobytes at a time eventually amount to a lot of kilobytes
Why is cute in Japanese and why is it a camal?
oh yeah, ive been meaning to do that, but keep forgetting. i'll try to remember it

Popular threads overview is in, there will be a separate page with a full list and that homepage widget will be getting tidied up when I'm slightly less sleep deprived.

Oh God How Did This Get Here I Am Not Good With Computer
This feels surreal yet comfortable
I think it also makes for a good lightweight version of the site
Hit up /theme/whatever if you want to go back to the standard dark theme.
Any chance we can get some way of disabling the image proxy? It kind of trashes any image with transparency, makes text hard to read and completely removes any animation that gifs had. I know this is to reduce bandwith, but there are some people who use the lite version to browse Knockout on some devices, like the Wii U, PSP, or some older phones that are more than capable of handling transparency and animated gifs.
In addition by converting every image to jpegs you run into that problem I mentioned a couple pages back, were simple pictures and pixel art actually inflates the image size by a considerable amount alongside a loss of quality. This in particular becomes problematic on screenshots of older retro games, and indie games with a retro art style.
The most egregious example being this thread of Undertale: Knockout Lite | UNDERTALE/DELTARUNE General
Nearly every screenshot of the game has increased in size, with the exception being one screenshot that was already saved as a jpeg for whatever reason, and an animated gif. The worst example increasing by nearly 10x the original.
Now this is only one and maybe sole example of this becoming a problem (although there aren't particulary many threads on Knockout yet), in the majority of cases the image proxy does reduce the image size, but maybe you can see why it might be nice to offer an option to disable the image proxy in some way.
the target of lite.knockout isn't Wii Us, it's early 90s computers that cant render PNGs, so i doubt you'll get a change there
I get that, but the amount of people still running early 90s computers are a lot smaller crowd than the people running devices that can't render regular knockout. It can make lite less of a novelty and give it more of a practical use.
People running early 90s hardware are probably better of turning off image embeds entirely. There also exists more modern browsers that are capable of running on older 90s hardware and render PNGs.
I'm not saying to remove the jpeg proxy in its entirety, just a way to disable it some way. Like for instance accessing a different URL similar to the way themes work.
I'll stick a settings panel in at some point, however you do know all embedded images are hyperlink right? You click on them and you're taken to the original images.
The whole idea is to cut bandwidth usage as much as possible, and if you're interested in something, you explicitly open it.
