I get that you can't just hand over the data to the forums to someone in case you decide to end em, but could you link to atleast something for people to atleast stay connected? I.e. another forum. Durring those few days that the site was down, discord made a TERRIBLE replacement. reddit wasn't great for it either.
I'd personally be content with Hezzy or whoever getting handed an empty, clean slate version of the website in terms of posts, threads and users. Would allow the community to survive without building absolutely everything from scratch
It might also vary by country, as well.
I guarantee there will be a lot of new users when S&box releases, please wait until then to decide
When did it happen? What country was the forum hosted in?
Why even consider getting rid of it? This notion alone has thrown many people here for a loop.
Hell, put up a donation thing to keep the site alive or something and hand off control to someone else at your company
I think this is the simplest and easiest way to go about this, Garry. Let us export and archive the stuff here, then just start over. Keep the community intact, let Hezzy or whoever make the decisions and mess with the site design, and stay on in a staff capacity to keep us updated on your goingons of your games and projects. Most of our long-running gags, memes, and threads have been preserved on Wikipunch anyway, an archival effort then a clean slate seems like a good way to go.
What if you didn't? I'm ignorant, so maybe this wouldn't work either, but what if you just handed over the base for the forums?
The main thing I noticed during these few days is that it's the structure that keeps us around. It's so much more appealing than a place like Reddit, and it gives us a real sense of community.
I would be a bummer to lose our accounts, but I think most people would agree, losing that, but keeping our community would a fair enough trade.
That's because the community cares far more about keeping the forums around than Garry does. We're suggesting this because we don't want him to get rid of them.
If he wants out, he wants out. It sucks, but plenty of effort to convince him otherwise has been made. If that doesn't change his mind, we have to think of an alternative to stick together.
Obviously it would be better if Garry decided to keep the forum how it is, there is a whole thread of people saying why they want the forum to be kept up, but if he doesn't want to run it anymore it might be better for it to be handed off to someone who wants to maintain it rather than just scrapped entirely or managed half-heartedly.
Can you at least revert it how it was before this stupid change with no video forum etc.
Yeah, just give us a way to import accounts into the new forum so it's all done with the user's consent. Like how the transition from oldpunch to nupunch happened. It doesn't even matter if all the old posts remain, we just need a way to verify the identities. I mean it'd be nice if someone also made a full archive of the existing forums, but that's not absolutely necessary.
Aren't the forums useful for when you eventually release that successor to Garry's mod? I'd have thought they would work as a net benefit in that respect.
I used to spend whole days in this forum back in the day, even contributed some gmod content and whatnot.
Nowadays I just lurk around every now and then to laugh at people
GDPR complicates the process considerably, if not making it outrght legally impossible. At least, with all the posts, threads and user accounts intact.
Maybe back in the 00s, when legislators and lawyers were still mostly technically illiterate and didn't understand all the implications behind "I'm going to hand over ownership of a forum that's got about 15 years worth of posts and user profiles".
The size and notoriety of the forum also matters too - a tiny clan forum could change hands a few times if only like ten people were around at a time, but FP is much, much larger than that, given that it's been a poor man's SomethingAwful for most of its life and has even managed to achieve its own Internet Fame™ a couple of times. Hell, I think the Subway thread made the actual news, didn't it?
like me, i'll buy it for $5 and half a frozen burrito and host the forums on a toaster.
Regardless of you do or dont close the forum, thank you for having the forums up an putting up with the lot of us.
But
garry admitted he doesn't visit the forums, that he grew out of it, that he doesn't understand them anymore
Why is it bad to agree with him?
How about "handing" the forum over to someone in Facepunch Studios itself maybe? Let it be out of your hair personally I guess.
This place has been a home to a lot of us.
Whatever it takes to keep this place going, I'm in.
Genuinely.
What factors are at play in your considerations? Is it time, money, personal fulfillment, cost, growth/future potential, or...?
I'm curious to know if there's anything I or another community member could do to improve things.
shut it down
If you want it gone so badly then delete your account and site bookmark.
shut yourself down
Go away lol
Dump it.

(probs been posted before, my bad if so)
Can't Hezzy or someone make a company based in the UK and a "business transaction" was had on the forum in which the GDPR would be satisfied with?
tbh with the return of megathreads the only thing I'd really like is the videos subforum
it's just not a format that meshes well with the rest of the content on the site, it needs its own separate section
you can't make a megathread just for videos, even the video subforum ALREADY had megathreads for certain Youtubers or events.
the video subforum was made for people to spend time watching videos, they could ignore the discussion if they wanted
now they have to sift through a bunch of shit they don't care about, literally
