I thought the subforum/tag idea was a great step in a good direction, especially with the filtering options. I feel like it just needed a different attempt at structuring the subforums for it really work well
can we have the gaslight rating back? it just doesn't feel like facepunch without it.
Alright everyone, take your xanax, smoke some weed or find another way to chill out and think about this shit. Some good advice that I've heard before: "If it's out of your control, don't worry about it. Focus on changing what you **can** change"; This means accepting the recent changes, cause there's not much we can do about them and they're really not the end of the world. Focusing on flaming the staff is also not helpful in any way, as I assume they also want to see this community continue to exist in some form too, don't forget they were users at one point too. (And more importantly actual human beings) Most of us on here don't want this shit to end, but garry's concerns regarding the future of forums as a whole is an entirely valid one. If possible, I'd love to still have this stay up until we figure out what's next. Forums are dying(or joining the old guard with IRC) whether we like it or not, so what *IS* next? That's what we should be focusing on in my opinion. Is it "fixing" the forums? The problem with that is as soon as an issue is "fixed", someone else thinks the fix is actually shitting things up even more(I think this part is sadly ingrained in our dumb monkey brains, the aversion to change). This has got to take a huge toll on garry and the mod team (How do we alleviate this?) Is it some custom/unique place that combines the best of forums and discord, or is it an already established platform? I'm sure doing something like a new place would be a massive undertaking which will most likely end up being not worth it in terms of mental and monetary strain. [newpunch being the perfect example of this.] Is the issue with associating the forums with facepunch studios the company? Is a re-branding/spin-off like resetera what we need then? We need to sit the fuck down and figure this shit out in the little time we have left, where we're heading, and if the forums are not a part of that, how we're going to reconvene. I truly love you all and hope this works out! 🖤
Search function for older posts is kind of broken.
This is the exact kind of post I'm talking about. What are you trying to achieve with this? Do you feel better for calling him a child? Do you think that this is going to help? It isn't. Shut up or fuck off.
Pressing question for you Hezzy... How is your day going? You doing well?
Not really, haven't had much sleep. Busy couple of days at work. Trying to play some Assassin's Creed Odyssey at the moment RDR2 has just been dispatched so hopefully I might get it early, although I'm in work and won't be able to play it much How about you?
You are a terrible community manager if this is your response to anything critical.
Okay. Having some girl trouble. Keep your chin up! This forum shit can be stressful especially now.
Why are we expected to just give Garry a pat on the back when his handling of Newpunch has been generally awful? There have been some great ideas thrown in, but either implemented half-way or just poorly. And then when he gets criticism he starts lamenting about how he wants to shut the forums down. That behavior is entirely on Garry, and trying to act like it's our fault for wanting a functioning forum is absurd.
did any of you even read the op? one of the first issues addressed was to not be a dick to garry and the staff, and some of you still do it anyway why?
because he sees this shit as an excuse to shut us down and having a bad forum experience is better than none
who exactly is being a dick to garrry???
it's sort of hard to do that when changes we have nothing to do with keep driving activity down, right after everybody saying it'll do exactly that. that's biting the hand that feeds. and while your heart is clearly in the right place with the appreciation station, it can really only mitigate this kind of self-perpetuating problem, not fix it. only so many people are realistically going to give glowing praise to the forums as is, and if that number isn't enough presently then we're already done. but it wouldn't hinge on that number if we just got met in the middle even once, if there was just a decent platform for us, a clean shot at showing garry that we care.
I don't get how the community needs to somehow "be positive and push forward" when we're constantly shit on from the only person who can actually improve the site. We can spend countless pages or even threads posting constructive reasons for why changes are either good or bad, only to have them ignored because a couple people made shitposts. The community has shown countless times that they don't want Facepunch to die out, so why is the burden still on us? If all the posts made in response to Garry's initial post about shutting down the forums weren't enough, then what's the point? It all feels so useless.
nothing about the situation is optimal, but I guess in the end this is a case of "choose your battles". garry is unpredictable, lots of his decisions are at first glance on a whim, for better or worse. I don't like it either, but I think we should play nice and show we care about the place in other ways than outrage.
I don't know what to do. I have never been extremely negative with any of the changes that garry has made. I said I don't like them and then move on. Or I say nothing because it's not that big a deal. Or I actually like them. How can I control the actions of others to be more positive?
sigh It would suck it the community went down because everyone(incl me I'm not a fucking angel and I do not claim to be one either) kept on tearing each others new arseholes every time there's a disagreement or something controversial happen. https://chie.club/files/images/st/1469d357-b680-488e-97a8-b7b467b78764.png I mean this with no ill intent or anything Hezzy(I'm really trying hard to not throw you under the bus either for reasons) but telling users to fuck off in any regard when you want them to be positive as stated here: Won't help the cause. In fact if I remember correctly. Had anyone said fuck off to any user they'd be banned on the spot regardless of context or what was in the post. I get what you mean though this forum is literally on a life line because of the decline and how people are not adapting to the changes at all but we really someone that we can look up to and at least temper what you write before we go and start calling out users who are having angry outbursts and "biting the hands". This sucks right now because I am now beginning to worry like everyone else here that their home is going to be taken away because non of us have that leader to guide the forum back into that positive and nourishing environment. This isn't a back and forth post either I recognize that a everyone is legitimately digging each other's graves here, we can all do better here and you are right, this is a GROUP EFFORT. The reality is that we are slowly turning into the enemy we want ourselves to avoid and it will only be our own faults if this forum dies because none of us can throw away the negativity and push on. Right now we need you to start the positive train. Things should start by bringing back the community events and servers thing we had. We talked heavily about a community event hub and I've already made a thread but it's yet to be stuck even though you said you would when you got to a computer. I get that you've been busy so here it is for convenience. I need to stress this and hopefully it will get into people's heads now that this is legitimately the last fucking chance we have. I've dropped several hints that Garry would consider deleting the forums and we aren't that far away from that horrible fate becoming reality. For all that is fucking holy. Please all of you stop this dumb bashing. It's not helping and there is nothing that can replace this forum if it dies.
you can't, that's the problem with this whole attitude. only so many people are ever going to be happy when they think things are busted and aren't getting fixed. whether that's right or wrong is irrelevant, the point is they're not gonna be won over without some sign that their confidence will be reciprocated.
I was really interested in Garry's idea to evolve the forum experience and I think the forums were going in the right direction generally, if slowly. I didn't agree with all of Garry's ideas and I think it would work better if he focused on the forums for a while and engaged with the users. His plans to integrate the forums with Facepunch's future games was really good, but the unfocused development style of Facepunch Studios, where new ideas are constantly tinkered with and easily dropped, means very little can ever be finished. This is fine for making a game that may never come out, but it doesn't work well for an active forum. Honestly I think Garry should hire a dedicated web developer to work on the forums and forge ahead with the games/forum integration. Especially with projects like S&box which would highly benefit from people sharing their experiences, much like Gmod did.
Sorry to barge in, but this is new to me? What the + sign beside the logo mean? https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/488/0d4731e9-b6f7-48df-89eb-cddc3cc56938/fplogoplus.png
Look's like Vivaldi yes? Unsure. Googling it doesn't reveal anything.
You might think forum posts as informal, but telling someone to "Shut up or fuck off." is a childlike response and incredibly unprofessional. If i were to use this kind of speech in any of the companies i have worked for i would be fired on the spot.
Wait. Downloading it now and testing something.
wow I guess it is for notifications. This is like, normal? Or just some hack job.
It's how most sites handle notifications (at least Twitter and here). Browsers can do a pretty weird job at handling these because it's simply just changing the contents in the <title> tag, there's no real hook for the browser to toast you a in tab notification.
Sorry I will refer myself to our Human Resources department
Considering there isn't any reason for people to actually join a community that is under threat of being disbanded you should probably at least try and hold on to members instead of trying to act like a proper witty lad banning people calling you out for the behaviour you yourself used to be so against when people point out problems in the way that the place is run.
Yeah, Babnux's ban makes no sense to be perfectly honest. Yes, he was critical of your actions as CM Hezzy - but in what way does that deserve a permanent ban? Especially for "Idiot Cull"? He criticsed the job you've been doing, not you personally.
All the effort totally rebuilding the forums, creating a good base for future development, all to be potentially gone after less then a year.
