no one is "spamming them to be spamming". They're sharing videos they think people on this site would like to see. This whole thing could have been avoided if we had a dedicated section for videos...
I don't think Hezzy implied it actually was the case, just that he's going to double-check to make sure it's not. I mean, fair enough right? AFAIK all the videos are legit. I've also made an effort to check them out again instead of avoiding general.
"The Videos Subforum wasn't necessary, let's delete it!" "Wow, there are so many video threads in General that it looks like spam." Hmmmmmm.
And I sympathize with people who want to browse general discussion for general discussion and, you know, not fast threads-tier topics and videos. But we've all been forced into the same subforum. I think you and I both agree that this shouldn't go on or be the state of things, but we all have to wait for garry to come to the conclusion everyone else already had right when the changes happened that, yeah, we as users liked our subforums and subforum communities and they shouldn't have been nuked arbitrarily and with no discussion or foresight.
See I don't actually believe people are being malicious about it, but even if they are, it doesn't really change anything. The general will get flooded with videos, be it now due to 'malicious compliance' or later simply due to an influx of videos naturally being posted.
https://forum.facepunch.com/general/bubpd/Replacement-Video-Section-2-0-Back-with-a-Vengeance/1/ Get this script I know you can say "you shouldn't have to" and "not everyone is going to bother with this/hear about it, so spam is still going to be an issue" and those are valid points. I'm just gonna keep bringing it up because it made browsing much better for me
the videos volume is still much lower than what it was. There is only one person who is responsible for "messing up the general"
I'd like to just point out that I said I was only going to look at the threads to determine if some of them were spam. Please stop trying to jump down my throat.
Just for the record, I've never accused you or felt you were responsible for any of this. I apologize if somehow that's how my posts came across, I know you're just the messenger and have the tough time of being in the middle of sympathetic yet still having to moderate on top of everything.
Just so we're on the same page here, an excerpt from our mod chat https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/99/d09ce214-6cf4-4559-9259-6a4c11a5ec40/Screenshot_20181116-010752_Discord.jpg
It isn't tho, people have always posted videos like this. It's just that now it's filling a different subforum.
Personally I like the idea of posting videos in the FTM section. It'll bring more people to that section. At the very least it's better than leaving it in GD. If it's a flash game or something, it would go in the games section anyway. There's also the possibility of people posting videos more frequently than normal to make a need for a subforum.
This entire thing just seems to blatantly ridiculous and convoluted for the sake of being convoluted. The simplest solution I can see is to bring back the videos sub forum. I mean, it would LITERALLY solve all these issues that has everyone up in arms. It just seems to painfully obvious, it makes me want to pull my hair out man. But I digress. I will stick to the unofficial script I suppose to see videos where they are supposed to be.
The point is to """solve""" the issue without interacting with Garry in any way. That's why everything is being so convoluted, the mods are trying to solve the problem without awakening Garry from his slumber and then Garry deletes the forums in a fit of rage.
completely agree. just give us back the fucking videos subforum.
The sudden "influx" of videos is just because Hezzy reassured us that the General subforum is where videos are meant to be posted so now we're just trying to be back into the same habits we had with the old video subforum. I don't know if you paid attention back in the days but this is still a lower influx than what the old subforum had so IDK what the fuck you want from us.
I feel like the thing is, the discussion in that screen cap would've never happened if the videos n' crap subforum was still around. The removal of it just created more problems to face. It doesn't make sense, man.
I think it is pretty sad that we have to fucking beg like dogs to get a simple subform. The forum was condensed without any warning, a lot of the changes are unwanted, but people are dealing with it. They want a little sub forum, is that much to ask? Why is it such an issue? why does this even have to be a debate?
I'm still under the assumption that A. there's no intention to keep the forums Garry's blogpost pretty much sealed that one for me even though I had my suspicions before that. it read like any horribly tone deaf tech release right before the bottom falls out B. Garry is purposely degrading the forums so the most vocal opponents leave and there's less backlash when the plug is pulled (the other option being the Hanlon's razor option but I don't think that's the case) C. the only reason Hezzy is here is so we can play the telephone game with him to keep the monkeys (IE us) from burning down the zoo before they sell it to china (Note I don't have a problem with hezzy or really the mod team in general obviously hezzy is at least trying to pick up the pieces of the shit ship) 95% of the problems here would be solved if garry would actually open an honest to god dialogue with the community even if it's as simple as a locked sticky with a timeline/ideas/reasons hell I'd even take biscuit recipes at this point to which we could discuss in either the same topic or one setup for this purpose. I like this forum I really do I wouldn't of stuck around for 8+ years if I didn't but I don't appreciate having to scream towards the mountains in the hopes they listen with an axe over my head with the executioner whispering in my ear "This is your fault. I wasn't there but this is your fault" I'm fully willing to work around changes if there is an actual plan but this limping to the mythical port where we don't sink into the abyss while hoping we don't take another cannon round has gotten real old real quick
If Garry was sick of maintaining the forums, he could have just as easily said "In 6 months, I'm shutting down the forums. That's enough time to say your goodbyes and preserve whatever you want/need." without him changing stuff despite him saying that he doesn't enjoy working on the forums. For something he doesn't want to deal with, he sure put in enough work.
I understand where you're coming from but I have questions Why is he implementing the changes he is? Obviously they are for the most part wildly unpopular. Why make the forum he doesn't like maintaining in the first place harder rather than easier to maintain? Continuing to make changes and not communicating the what/why/where/how and when (obviously all of those aren't needed for all changes all the time but any of them would be much appreciated) is only serving to villify garry more and more. When like i said I believe 95% of the forums problems could be solved with proper communication. I'd even be okay with it being through the hezzy telephone if it was more info than nope not coming back tough titties (obviously not what hezzy said but you get the gist) All this is doing is turning the forum into "us V them" and in that case no wonder everyone is angry. Perhaps I'm too close to this because I do this for a living (software development that is) but in my eyes if pulling the plug isn't the end goal then garry is sure shooting himself in the foot
I outright unsubscribed from gd because of the video spam but you seem to be completely off the mark here. You're assuming that everyone's spamming videos to try and prove a point. But nobody seems to actually be doing that at all. The reason it's become an issue is simply because the video section was always pretty active so shoving it into gd drowns out anything slower than the video subforum was.
and that is exactly why having videos anywhere other than in its dedicated sub is a really stupid idea. video threads are created and move at their own pace. Having them alongside all the other types of threads in one sub just makes everything less accessible.
I think the original changes came down to a want to 'modernize' the forums to be more like other popular platforms (Reddit) combined with a lack of understanding of the core differences between an old school forum setup and a content aggregator like Reddit (Since IIRC Garry mentioned Reddit a lot in his posts about the forums), then people constantly being annoyed with the changes being put down to that people will never be happy or grateful for any changes so why bother. I liked newpunch from the start, but I barely use it anymore after the subforum merges because I need to sit and sift through stuff I'm not interested in to find the stuff I am instead of being able to visit a subforum dedicated to it. The changes to megathread rules, the subforums condensing reek of trying to force FP subforums to behave like subreddits but again Reddit is not a community focused website as much as it is a place where you can see the very latest news on hyper specific topics. It's literally designed to be that way and trying to force that style on subforums here without the algorithms that force popular posts to the top and force them to disappear as they lose popularity means everything just gets buried in a sea of threads which will die out in a day without people constantly bumping them. To be honest the forums as they are now look like they are in an OK place, its just the nonsensical removal of the video section and doubling down on it.
Condensing the subforums was purely a "fuck you, you want megathreads so bad? Well we ought to encourage that, shouldn't we? NO SUBFORUMS"
beta brain idea: Make a Videos subforum big brain idea: Rename General to Videos, and allow general chat to be posted there as well. Checkmate garry.
Back in the day Facepunch was damn near inaccessible for most forum users with it's smartness systems and banwords but we came and we stayed because the content was good, our community was close, we shared the common interest initially of G-Mod but throughout many years (11 for me!) it flourished into a love for the community itself. Garry obviously gave a shit as his game was still selling and the forums generated revenue. And now it's just a sad, sad husk of a forum which was once a ton of fun. G-Mod brought us, the content kept us, but now we're all just being made to fuck off elsewhere. Both that and the fact my account migration didn't work at all means I probably won't come visit here anymore
Well there you have it, people adapting. How did they do it? Fixing the shit that got broken themselves. Can we just get out subforum back now?
Maybe Garry is trying to run facepunch like bethesda.
So have we given up on the video subforum?
