I think it's because they're trying to take a more gritty type look.
Didn't you know 2D animation is a myth. This makes me wonder what will they use for Space Jam 2.
pokemon: the first movie (1998) https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/302319/78e30a67-cad1-457f-b869-f1666657d58e/image.png detective pikachu (2019) https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/302319/e1eba8bd-5dbb-4e35-8fc6-2ac87e6a97d2/image.png
Every single Pokemon in this film looks like a bastard. That's as close as I can get to conveying my feelings.
The voice doesn't match the body imo.
I have mixed feelings about this...
Isnt that partially the point?
Y'know what...? All things considered, given that it's live-action and they (I guess) wanted a realistic portrayal of the Pokémon... this could be a lot worse. This is probably not too far-fetched from what it would probably look like, had these damn things been a reality. I mean, to be fair, "Pokémon" IS short for "Pocket Monsters" - and these are pretty monstrous. On that note, I can't fucking wait to see it. Anything with Reynolds in it is gold these days, even the fucking phone game commercials he's in all the damn time.
Because contrary to what you might think, this isn't just being aimed at little kids, but at everyone in the world who plays any form of Pokemon - including Pokemon Go. (Seriously, the whole reason this even got greenlit is because of Pokemon Go's success). And for some reason, animation still has the stigma of being for kids, especially in the US. They want to hit as many quadrants with this movie as possible, not just the ones every animated film that isn't made by Pixar hit. I know, its stupid, but it's also true. Why else do you think there have undoubtedly been people who ignored the ratings of films like Sausage Party and took their kids to see it? Because people are dumb enough in this country to assume that CGI = kids movie, and don't even do any further research whatsoever. The same moron parents also assume comic book movie = appropriate for kids starting at a certain age, and went and took their kids to see the original Deadpool.
Fuck it. I'm glad we're getting weird shit like this rather than that Monster Hunter movie.
honestly it looks like a pretty fun movie. for a live action Pokemon movie its probably the best they could manage in terms of having them look like they exist. looking forward to this.
I would have believed it for a second if someone said this is a sculpture made from mashed potatoes.
Idk guys, I love it
Jesus fucking shit they have vore in a pokemon film
I saw the images first and was expecting the worst but doesn't actually look that bad? It looks like it's trying to be accurate and the only reason criticism I can give is that some designs don't necessarily fit how I imagined them to. Pikachu, Bulbasaur, and Charizard look decent, but Greninja, Psyduck and Jigglypuff look way too realistic, Mr Mime being something in it's own right of uncanny valley Other than that the plot isn't too bad. Generic for sure but I can see some potential since it looks like it's just"the Pokemon world, but in a realistic lens" than say the Sonic movie that takes place in "Green Hills, USA" I definitely expect to enjoy it, either because it's suprisingly good or laughably bad
Don't tell me this is true
oh fuck this looks amazing
Wait wait wait, hold up. Generic?
Huh. I saw the flood of still images from other people's reactions before I had a chance to watch the trailer, and yeah that's all pretty uncanny/unsettling. But it jives a lot better in motion than I would have thought.
Honestly I like the way it all looks. I can understand why some might find it uncanny and creepy, but I think it looks quite good. Now, the true crime here is the lack of Danny Devito.
Generic probably wasn't the right word, just that the plot feels like a dark teenager film, but I imagine that's the target demographic so I can't really say it's anything other than a nitpick
honestly as far as video game films go this doesn't look that bad
Oh, God too much faithful of Pokeman model designs guys with hyberealistic look. But overall, still not too uncanny for me.
i still wish danny devito voiced pikachu. just compare to the game's vo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahF7kCWEwoE
its less about everything else and more about the thing being called "detective" pikachu. wich instantly translates into some exec's head as "it has to be dark gritty humor!"
This looks oddly charming I guess. That Jigglypuff did fuck me up tho. Real talk, show me the fucking absurd Pokemon from the later generations in horrifying live action. Like these pieces of shit https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/1794/cf7d9767-6acc-42a3-b969-8786e1cf8acf/image.png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/1794/91133b5f-832c-436c-8ede-02ef3a6baf2f/image.png
Can we not pretend gen 1 doesnt have some stinkers? (literally) https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/174983/cb45dab8-94a5-4ea0-8d2c-e00122f7c91f/image.png
Oh god yeah. Mr. Mime sucks ass too. But come on, even Muk is better than fucking Klefki
Like, make Pikachu about 50% blurrier and he's honestly adorable. Watching from a distance of about ten to twelve feet, he was cute as shit. Up close though, little too much fuzzy.
Honestly I dig the border-line creepy realistic look they have.
