Really, I always felt Pikachu to be a pretty uninspired design compared to a lot of the other Gen1 Pokemon.
I think it looks interesting. It's more unique than just another animated movie. All depends on whether or not the actual movie is good, though.
I'm honestly not sure how else you would do Pokemon in live action. If they went any further and tried to model them after real life animals, it would have turned off a lot more people than it has (The character designs they chose have as many supporters as detractors, at the least.). And if they went in the direction of the game aesthetics, it would just look cheap as hell. Honestly, as bizarre as the whole thing is, they are legitimately putting in effort to an extent almost no other live action adaptation of a video game ever has. I think they might have a winner on their hand - not just commercially, but possibly critically too. (I mean, it doesn't take much to get rated fresh on rotten tomatoes. Look at Thor 2 The Dark World. All it has to be is entertaining, and you'll get 60 percent of critics to give you a 3/5 score.)

They chose the right person for the job. I always loved how he turned pokemon designs into hybrids of living creatures, as well as come up with semi-scientific explanations for the fantastical aspects of the pokemon in question. His work on the gastly line is probably some of the most creative.
Trubbish has a great design and I will defend it till the end of time.

I bet it's gonna be full of buddy cop clichés. The main character will turn out to be a loose cannon and the comissioner/chief we saw in the trailer will have his badge around halfway through the movie.
Honestly I'm okay with that considering the alien-ness of the rest of the movie setting

This actually looks kind of good? There's effort that's been put into the pokemon designs, yeah its unsettling but I actually kind of like that all things considered.
The main "artistic" issue of the operation is that the world the Pokemons find themselves in the videogames, the animated movies, the anime series, the manga, etc. doesn't attempt to emulate our own, but it's designed and drawn (environments, human beings and everything) as to accomodate the colors, shapes and motifs of the poket monsters, not the other way around.
Hence why taking the Pokemons and just putting them into a live-action, realistic setting indistinguishable than the real life is prone to create the greates amount of uncanny valley seen in ages.
I'd lie however if I said the Pokemons shown in the trailer weren't extremely faithful to their videogames/anime counterparts

Pikachu's animations are pretty good too, reminds me of the anime.
It somewhat makes sense for Jigglypuff to have fur, considering how Wigglytuff's PokeDex entries tall about its fur. 'Puff' is literally in its name. I think the eyes could be altered though.
Overall the designs look appropriate.

I'm annoyed that they picked Ryan Reynolds, because that's going to be who i imagine throughout the whole movie. They couldn't have picked a voice actor instead of a famous person?
