They didn't. The Brotherhood's origin was "We defected a week before the bombs dropped, then we moved our entire base, families included, to a more secure base away from the awful experiments we took part in." Then there's nothing for the next 60 years of their history except "We sent a patrol out and they get killed so we stopped sending them out until we can figure out what happened to them." The Enclave just fucking appear in Fallout 2 and act like they always existed. That's when the retcons of the Vaults being experiments created by Vault-Tec is introduced and how the Enclave are trying to retake America with data they took from the vaults. Funny how retcons are okay when Fallout 2 does it. Super Mutants on the other hand I do agree with. The general idea behind their inclusion is good for other shit though (West Tek were experimenting with the FEV in West Virginia to test its effects on plants to see if they could create bigger, more resilient crops. The inclusion of fucked up proto-Super Mutants would have been great, not the fully developed Fallout 4 mutants. Hell just making the mutants come from Vault 87 would have been a fine compromise.). Besides which they do much more interesting shit with FEV in the game anyway. (Many of the cryptids you find in the game are FEV mutants, the Grafton Monster is a person who grew out of control and lost many of its senses, the Snallyghaster is a regional variant on Centaurs).
Its never explained to what extent the Enclave were actually spread out, the only group we know of are the West Coast. That's the same kind of reasoning why Supermutants are always around. Oh, vault-tec was everywhere. The Institute was everywhere. Its not good writing. I will say fair cup to the BoS part, though it still irks me that we juuuust had to have the BoS in there somewhere. There are a lot of interesting military units that I could see surviving that'd make for more interesting factions than just plastering the BoS everywhere.

Oh, I could see how that could come across. My bad, my entire issue is that they're there in West Virginia but don't exist anywhere else. Like, if you actually think about Maxson being able to contact other military units, you can suddenly make the argument that a lot of the problems they were having with manpower in 2 and NV make zero sense. Hell, with 4's fucking BATTLE BLIMP, the Brotherhood of Steel don't appear to be in the dire straits that canonically they're supposed to be in. And as for the Enclave, they were never meant to be the Illuminati, even in 2 when they were introduced and then subsequently destroyed, their limits were grounded very firmly and their economical reach and access to technology well defined. And 76 does contradict the previous games, just as 4 did. I wouldn't be surprised if a bunch of lore tool tips and things mentioned are actually things that wouldn't have worked but that'd require at least 2 more weeks of playing the game and after the BETA, I'm not doing that. Oh and speaking of Super Mutants, fucking Deathclaws, why?
The problem that some of these bug have been around for like nearly a decade now! I dunno about anyone else but I'm getting tired of Beth's games being buggy messes. They're a AAA studio with the QA skills of a euro-jank studio.
One can only hope this results in some sort of quality control being implemented at Bethsoft, but I might as well be wishing for a 5-foot dong and an infinite vodka swimming pool in terms of likeliness.

I think they thing you have to ask when considering £50 is "Will Bethesda fix this game, and what will it look like in a year". I think if it is still just as broken, with as little to do, but they've added more microtransactions then you shouldn't be supporting/have supported this. It's sad that this probably won't even go down as one of the biggest fuck ups in recent gaming, because in the end who really cares about this game? It had very little hype, it's got piss poor reviews and it has typical microtransaction bullshit.

From what I know, the biggest problems with Fallout 76's story are that audio recordings instantly play and yet are also instantly cut off by in game notifications - and they don't resume playing afterwards. And honestly, the choice of audio recordings is just plain bad for a multiplayer game in the first place, given that the first thing people do when they find them in most games is to stop what they're doing just so they can to listen to them. There's nothing fundamentally wrong with environmental storytelling - Metroid Prime wouldn't have had half as big a following if it wasn't so incredibly successful in that regard - it's just that Fallout 76 went around it in the clumsiest way possible, especially given the type of game it is.
Honestly a lot of it feels like they expect people to mostly play alone and team up with nearby people, rather than going around with your friends all the time. Which is a weird way to design things. Also, the worst part of the audio logs is when they place multiple in the same room that are minutes long each. Ends up with you just standing around listening to them.

This game is potentially redeemable with serious tender love and care, but its current state is unacceptable for any release whatsoever. I am not sure if Bethesda will stick around to correct the majority of the bugs. Skyrim to this day still has a whole host of issues that need community patches to fix. No Man's Sky sticks out as an example of a complete turnaround, but sadly Hello Games is the exception rather than the norm. A pity, too. I was actually optimistic that Bethesda would be able to pull it off since it appeared to double down on what they got right about Fallout 4, but they gutted most of the creative aspect instead.
I'm honestly confused as to why they didn't just sell the online component as a 40$ DLC for fallout 4 or something.

As far as the Andromeda comparison goes, Andromeda is actually a pretty fun game now after it got mostly fixed. Fallout 76 is another story though, it's basically a much worse version of fallout 4 with multiplayer slapped on, without any innovation in tech or gameplay and a shitton of bugs.
Is it though? I've seen the sentiment (even amongst most of my friends who despise most of fallout 4) that a coop DLC would have brought them back to the game. These same friends did the amazon pre-order refund trick and, even despite liking parts of FO76, couldn't justify paying full price for a game so completely content barren and guaranteed to be without a player-base in weeks.
