I fully intend to project my current aesthetic preferences onto my children
Why does it have to be remade in CG instead of just watching it in 2D though? What does the CG add that the 2D animation was unable to convey? I think we all know that Disney is not making these remakes out of the goodness of their heart to spread joy to children or any shit like that, they made it because it's easy brand recognition and they know remaking old shit makes them fuckloads of money without having to write anything actually new.
Also, because "It's too old" also isn't a reason to remake something. That's just a shitty attitude.
That's why they made it CGI, it brings new values to the table.
Am I the only one who thinks the CGI looks really bad? I get that this is just a teaser and it might improve but damn this looks like something that would come out 5 years ago.
Except it already looks worse than an almost 25 year old film. I can't imagine what 25 years is going to do this film.
But what does it matter? It'll be fun next year. In 25 years you can still watch the original one.
Of course that's not a valid reason, but trash talking a remake of a very old movie just because "original is still good" is no reason to not make a remake with current techniques.
Regardless of their cash money reasons, we are getting a new movie with a (hopefully) similar story that most people have loved and enjoyed. You can show your kids the original 2D ancient movie if you wish and maybe they will like it (or maybe they will hate it because it's not the CGI they are familiar with), but that doesn't mean kids of this generation shouldn't be given the chance to enjoy a classic story told with the current technology of the generation that they grew up with. Just as a lot of my generation (including myself) look back on the classic Disney 2D drawn movies with nostalgia, i expect the children of this generation will look back at the 3D CGI movies of this era with that same nostalgia that we feel.
With the rational that you present, no movie can ever be made using CGI because it will always age with time. We will never move past 2D animation and we can never have CGI based movies because someone has a hard-on for their media always having to look modern.
Suspiria 2018 was better tbh
I remember watching the Jungle Book and The Sword in the Stone as a kid, I can't remember once thinking "Why am I watching this old shit?", I was actually surprised when I learned they'd been made in the 60's. I know they're making a live action remake of the The Sword in the Stone, probably because it's older than frigging Mary Poppins, but you have to think out of those two movies which one has aged the worst? Going to be a cycle of generational reboots, live action with copious amounts of CG guarentees they'll look dated in a decade or so, planned obsolescence more or less.
2D animation isn't some ancient relic that today's generation of kids wouldn't dare to touch, especially since that it's a format that plenty of successful modern family-friendly shows still use. If the story in the remake is so similar, the only practical reason I see for this existing is to cash-in on the name recognition of the original.
I sort of a agree here. I don’t think this particularly looks good or interesting, but people shit on 3D Animation so much, making it seems like it offers nothing.
Don’t get me wrong, I love 2D Animation. I would love another animated film that’s draw, but 3D most definitely offer things 2D doesn’t.
Pixar, and new Disney’s films have such amazing visual ideas that i think would never be realized in 2D. Would Coco be as breathtaking in 2D? I don’t think so.
That is a cute looking lion cub
but he aint no Simba
if you think technology makes the movie, you need to watch more
What's next Hercules? Screw you Disney I want that awesome 2D animation back.
Simba looks CGI af

I think it looks good. I Enjoyed the Jungle Book.
Haven't seen beauty and the beast yet, though I have listened to their covers of the songs.
Man there's some whiny pissbabies in this thread.
I don't see the appeal of these "live action" remakes (it's hardly live-action lol). These remakes are so forgettable, especially when they do nothing new/different with the story
compared to the originals.
Why bother going to see a movie that you've already seen/you're already able to see?
The CGI looks gorgeous, but that's nothing special anymore.
It's nothing more than a cashgrab riding on nostalgia.
I see the movie already got leaked.
I can't wait until Disney runs out of things to remake and starts making original shit again.
hey its the lion king but without any of the charm the original had!
I never said that at all. I love 2D films. I just think the hate-boner some people have for CGI is unjustified. If someone claims that 2D is always superior to CGI because CGI ages bad, then why make any CGI based movie ever again?
CGI isn't the problem, lazy CGI is. All the good CGI you don't notice. Jurassic Park and Terminator 2 still look (relatively) good more than 25 years later.
it's just that
sounds like you're saying it's bad that kids must watch a 24 year old movie. as if we're depriving them of an objectively better experience by not remaking it
disney isn't remaking the lion king in the interest of children, it's just good business. easier and less risky to lean on a big, established name like this, than to actually give an original script a chance
I just got back from Disneys 'The Nutcracker'. Just makes me so sad that so much artistic vision and work went into another remake. It really does nothing for the story but it is technically one of the most beautifully consistent movies I have seen. I imagine this will be the same all flash no substance- missing the originals heart/soul.
Yes, I agree about Disney's reasons and would prefer if they would be more original, but that doesn't justify the hate for a remake of an old classic IP that people will likely enjoy.
Not to mention that, by doing this, Disney can wash their hands from all the royalties and rights they own to the original crew.
This allows them to make more money off of existing content while also dodging some extra responsibilities.
i disagree entirely, but for the same reason
yes, people will likely enjoy it. this will be a massive success. at the end of the day, the critics aren't the ones driving ticket sales, and they're nowhere near the majority
everyone else buys into this shit, and the fact they do is exactly why disney's gonna continue to use ungodly amounts of money towards gimmicky re-dos of movies that already exist, rather than be forced to take risks. for me, the more people hating on this, the better
