I hear money is the cool thing nowadays the kids like.
I suppose it's not the worst casting choice here. I still would have expected Butler to be Kartvelian or Mongol, but changing him is nowhere near as bad as making Root a woman since underlying sexism in the LEP was a major element of Holly's character arc, making her commanding officer an older woman undermines so much of that.
I remember people talking about an Artemis Fowl film back when I was in secondary school.
Striking while the iron is ice cold I see.
That's another thing that has me very skeptical of this film. It's been in development hell for a loooong time. That's never a good sign.
Dang, I loved the books when I was a kid, but, to repeat what has been said already, this looks like 6/10 tops. I think this would translate much better as an animated film, similar to the upcoming Spider-Man movie. I just can't stomach that 12 year old genius in real life. With the casting and aesthetics, it seems like they're aiming at younger audiences. Do younger audiences really know anything about Artemis Fowl? Wouldn't it make more sense to appeal to the generation that grew up with the books?
Probably not since then they'd probably make a gritty reboot which would be even worse
Man, I haven't read the books in so long and when I did it was in Swedish. I never read all of them either, I think I did read The Eternity Code and The Opal Deception. I vividly remember one of those (maybe?) not really so much being about Artemis Fowl himself as much as it was about this little elfish creature instead. One of them also had that fictional alphabet, which me and a few friends used in middle school to write messages to eachother. Good times.
why he look like that neck guy from the mugshot
Disney's been trying to have its own Harry Potter for so long now it hurts to see them still trying. Yet they somehow seem to be missing one of the major things that made harry Potter work as a film: its casting. Prior to the series becoming a smash hit, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint were complete nobodies (Radcliffe was literally the only one of the three to have had any professional acting experience), a franchise like this really needs to not have a star-studded cast just because it's more easy to believe either an unknown or a voice actor as the main character. Honestly the only actor I could see convincingly pulling off a character like Artemis would be John Franklin circa 1983, but even then now he's too famous for another child character for many to see him as anything else.
He also pretty much dies a few times as well
I remember "The Supernaturalist" really fondly.
I don't remember if he ever died as badly as Holly did though.
My one weakness
Other than getting shot in the heart and fused with a kevlar vest afterwards?
Which thing that happened to Holly are you referring to?
In Lost Colonywhen she got impaled on a demonic rune sword, bled out and died, then said death got erased from existence by Artemis shooting the demon in the past. The fun thing about time travel plots is they can be retconned in real time!
This looks like another movie in the running to have great CGI'd Sci-Fi with terrible plot.
See the remakes of Total Recall and Robocop, Jupiter Ascending
The only good thing about this trailer so far is that it's inspired me to re-read the books, which I haven't done until sometime between the Atlantis Complex and the Last Guardian
I'd love to get myself a set of the books, although I don't care for the newer cover art on any of them.
i bet you can't wait to watch a consitantly 6/10 series suddenly plummet, the last few books are horrific imo
By the end of the series I could only really get the 2nd edition covers (https://prodimage.images-bn.com/pimages/9781400085866_p0_v1_s550x406.jpg) which at the time I thought were terrible. But now I see dogshit like this: (https://d3ddkgxe55ca6c.cloudfront.net/assets/t1502340135/a/40/b5/181338-ml-1652554.jpg) and I realize they weren't actually all that bad.
That said, I'm actually digging the relaunched covers they put out a few months ago:

There's a reason I stopped right after The Atlantis Complex. At that point I was 16 and could quite clearly see that the series had effectively played itself out. The Lost Colony is definitely where the series began to slide.
I am really glad I got the first editions of the ones that have them. It's kind of amazing just how many different covers they went through on these. I personally liked the first style the most, then the second style came and added some really awkward and unfinished looking character art. Third edition had better looking artwork but that stupid AF logo, was pretty glad that they reused that art for the fifth edition covers though after the fourth edition covers thought being completely monochrome was a good idea.

Seriously just look at the 2nd edition of Lost Colony. I completely avoided buying that one because by the time I started looking the first edition cover was out of print.
The worst part of a book series getting adapted is that you can only get fugly poster covers with terrible real people on them.
I wonder why this never happened to the Harry Potter books.

For those that don't know, the plot of the movie "I, Robot" was so drastically different from the book that the tagline "One man saw it coming" doesn't even make any sense because Will Smith's character isn't in the book, the protagonist is a woman, and "it" doesn't "come" because the book is a collection of short stories
Probably because of how protective JK Rowling used to be over the books.
not protective enough to prevent covers like this

Why do they all have noses the size of a jew stereotype?
wow this doesn't look ANYTHING like I imagined it in my head.
but that was over a decade ago. when this movie should have been made.
