Ah, the ol' subverting expectations bit. A classic excuse for not knowing how to make a film.
The whole point of his character was that he was an emotionally null super genius who cared so little for the people around him that it became his only weakness. And his whole character arc was discovering how to actually feel and connect with other people, and using his intelligence to do something other than make money. And they're trading a dark skinned Holly for dark skinned Butler and Juliet. Whats the point?
you know what would subvert my expectations? a good artemis fowl film true to the source material
That's the copy of that book that I have actually. I liked the movie, my mom got me the book, and I absolutely loved the book, but was always like "Isn't this going to sync up with the movie in someway shape or form?" and quickly realized "no, movies are bad at being books".
The Holly casting really has me scratching my head. She's supposed to be the hotshot rookie cop with a chip on her shoulder, and she's being played by a girl who turned 15 last month. She's not even two years older than the kid playing Artemis. Sure, Holly was young in the books, but she quite clearly wasn't a child. I get that Elf=Small=Kid, but come on. You have Josh Gad playing Mulch at 37 and Judi Dench playing Root at 83. Why did they decide to cast so young for the role? Maybe I'll be wrong and this'll blow me away, but nothing I've seen so far has me confident.
I'm just gonna break out my books here: Holly Short: as mentioned, brown skin and red hair, these are both described as common traits for elves, she has a hooked nose and is just slightly shorter than average for an elf at 1 meter tall. Commander Root: also an elf, nicknamed "Beetroot" for the color and shape of his face when he was angry, and oh yeah: he was a guy, and most of his interactions with Holly involve her working against sexism in the LEP and her society in general with Root originally representing the old guard but eventually coming around to her. Foaly: forgive me for going Cinemasins here but I'm just gonna say "that's racist" about them casting an Indian man as the tech-support guy. Mulch Diggums: okay my complaint here is mostly just going to be the CGI they're going to have to pull for this because Mulch in typical dwarf fashion is mostly beard, so going with Josh Grad is just going to look terrible. Artemis Fowl (Jr.) arguably a psychopath, heck when he travels back in time during one of the later books even he is disturbed by just how messed up a kid he is. After the presumed death of his father and his mother consequently suffering a serious mental breakdown when he was age 9, he's effectively had no parenting and only minimal outside social interaction at all, his activities consist primarily of his obsession with trying to restore his family's status through pulling off what he considers the ultimate heist, and the only thing he's ever shown doing for fun is terrorizing his own teachers at school and publishing articles under fake names. As I've said before the casting of black actors as both Butler and Juliet are also rather strange as the books consistently describe them as being Eurasian in appearance and Butler has a slavic first name (Domovoy), Butler spent quite a lot of his past undercover in the Russian Mafia, and Juliet ends up becoming a professional wrestler.
And we have our first press photo. https://ewedit.files.wordpress.com/2018/12/ARTF-_328732939020321231.jpg Eeeeugh.
"Holly Short was the first female member of LEPrecon" Multiple female officers in the background. "She originally started out in LEPtraffic, then, when her promotion came, she had to prove herself worthy to Commander Julius Root." Root is an old lady. How do you fuck up this bad.
Did they even ask Carrie Fisher's family before they decided to cast her in a roll posthumously?
*pushes up glasses* Ahem, I'll have you know that while Holly Short was the first female LEPrecon officer, the officers responsible for her recovery were members of LEPretrieval, an entirely different branch of the LEP which could have had female officers. But seriously its going to be garbage. Also, I've made it as far as the fourth book in my efforts to re-read the series. As I recall, the fifth book is where the series completely hops off the rails and Colfer starts bringing in more ridiculous and fantastical elements.
Is it just me, or did they somehow manage to make Dench look even more white than usual for a character whose skin is supposed to be the color of a beet?
