The design of having a markup character that is arbitrarily represented depending on the receiver rather than the sender is terrible. So the underlying tech is shit.
Otherwise who cares, smileys, emoticons, etc have existed for ages on the internet for use in communication . As long as they've existed there have been people who communicate exclusively in them, and people who never use them, sometimes they are a useful shorthand, often they're just spam but then text can be the same thing so back to square one?
I'm blaming japan for this one
I use them mostly when I´m joking or being sarcasting so my messages are less likely to be misinterpreted.
I miss the cute android emojis though.

👌
Regardless of the potential use of expressing emotions or inflections that are otherwise lost in bare bones text. I don't think they'll be the next written language.
Pictograms and heiro require contextual meaning thus I find it lazy if not down right cryptic when some people just type emojis instead of formulating and critically thinking what they want to say in text.
TL;DR Emojis/emoticons have their place to only augment normal written languages with extra emotion/inflection, not as replacements (also I miss Oldpunch's emoticons)

smilies (the worst ones, used by grandma and elementary schools, make you cringe yourself into low orbit) =

in short, I don't mind emoji (which given the ending of the word looks nicer without the 's' tacked on, imo) and I really only use the thinking one and it's many meme-y variations. I use them in general only for texting and in Discord, which even then is mostly dominated by custom emotes. On Facepunch I try and stick to classic emotes because I love them and they're reminiscent of oldpunch and warm days past.
Smilies are cancer.
By the way, I've compiled all of Oldpunch's emotes here if you guys want them. They're archived on the Wayback machine, too.
I just make really stupid collages with them. Mainly rockets being launched by Canada at pregnant women.
🤔is the best emoji tho
