It all depends on what kind of game it is.
In a power fantasy game it sure as balls would be annoying.
But it fits in a more punishing game where jamming is punishment for abuse and lack of care for a gun, or using weapons destined for dismantling.
it's pretty fucked that a company can fuck up as many times as EA and still not go bankrupt
And with it, Mass Effect and Dragon Age go into the abyss. EA should be tried for crimes against humanity, what do they even do with all those awesome IP's they leave dying? What's gonna happen when there's only Battlefield left?
Their sports games.
Already now, the majority of their revenue comes from people buying shit like FIFA and paying for the all microtransactions in those games. EA could literally kill every other franchise right this instance,
and FIFA alone would still rake them in billions.
Buy out more studios to make a quick cash before shutting them down like they always do?
Or go all in on the mobile market I guess
Even in a game with really mediocre shooting mechanics like Hellgate: London, you've still got gameplay more engaging than most clickathon ARPGs. And there's far more elements of a good shooter then varied weapons. Rewarding skill with weak spots, first person exploration, the rhythm of reloading and managing ammo, and just satisfaction of shooting things are all elements that can be added to a game without any necessary sacrifice to either genre.
My post was about how the parts of the genres you're engaging with most often, the shooting and the looting, don't work well together. It's not meant to be a comprehensive summary of all the elements of either genre.
I don't play ARPGs because I don't care for the gameplay myself, but most looter shooters also have underwhelming gameplay in my experience. The only ones I enjoyed were Destiny (which was also immensely frustrating) and The Division (which I played a year after release when it was fixed to not suck).
Flying, hovering, and dashing add great dynamism and verticality to the combat and the abilities are really satisfying to use, especially when you freeze a group of guys and then detonate them and a big COMBO! popup flies out of every enemy on the screen
Not that you would get that out of this video since Brad just plays it like Gears of Duty and is afraid to make use of flight in combat even though he's playing the Javelin that's meant to be always hovering all the time
Looking at the combat in motion it is surprisingly similar to Mass Effect Andromeda combat gameplay, right down to some of the same quirks.
They literally built Anthem from the corpse of the mass effect series didn't they?
You know, that sounds somehow famil ...
... Oh
I don't blame them tbh. If it worked (and combat is apparently one of the few things that did work in ME: A) it can be repurposed an built on in later games. That's just how game development works. If anything ME: A may have been piloting this combat system as it was quite a radical change to earlier ME games from what I've seen.
Guy who finished ME:A here;
Yeah the gunplay/combat were the only reason I kept going. Everything else was shite; they've put Mass Effect on a funeral pyre and used the ashes to build a new pot.
Mass Effect Andromeda's combat would have been phenomenal if it was actually done properly. Every level had broken spawns in which enemies can spawn immediately behind you. Weapon type damage was completely fucking broken and damage types were bizarre and didn't work
Not for much longer, as mention in a previous thread, even casual sports drones and investor/shareholders are at the end of their rope with EA. If Anthem bombs they are going to pull the plug and withdraw from the company (which is already happening). It needs to be both a critical and commercial success.
Also FIFA revenue and popularity is dropping hard
Yeah I don't blame them, nor did I mean it as an attack on their development practice. The combat was one of the very few things ME:A did right (if it worked as intended) so it makes sense they iterate on that.
Its just that the more I see of the gameplay, the more similarity I see with Andromeda and how most of the bad stuff has seemingly not improved either (notably the facial animations, little quirks in aiming/movement, the lack of momentum). Its bringing back memories I have been trying to forget.
