Calculator app will just spit out what order you put in the stuff.

Correct order would be 2x4 + 2. Unless it was (2+2)x4, in which case yeah it would be 16 but it's not in parenthesis so you don't do addition first.

I’ve never understood why people make such a big deal over PEMDAS. It’s just a convention to deal with shitty notation, there really isn’t a reason to care so much about it

Because then you got shit like this where the answer is completely wrong. If you did the wrong order of operations in an actual business and ordered too little or too many of what you're supposed to get, you'd get your ass chewed out.

I had to come to the conclusion that schools utterly failed a ton of people when I was in second year Statistics in University and only about a dozen people, including myself, actually learned PEMDAS/BEDMAS in any prior schooling
