I hope a new forum doesn’t have ratings. They are just such a lazy and thoughtless way to contribute. And leads to the case of either you’re right or you’re dumb - not healthy for discussion.
Opinions will be banned altogether, don't worry.
Ratings are a nice way to contribute to threads while avoiding contentless "I agree" or "nice" posts. Do you like a piece of art someone posted? Give it an Artistic. Is someone being apologetic or encouraging? Give it a Friendly. So forth and so on. Imagine if every "Agree" rating was instead a person just quoting that post and saying "I agree" - that would simply clog up the forums and wouldn't be very nice.
I'd also like to add that ratings can (for better or for worse) let you gauge a post's quality before you even read it. Sometimes what you post in LMAO pics isn't that funny according to Facepunch. This post, for example, has some degree of quality to it, wouldn't you agree?
That rests on the assumption that people will always reply to posts, if they are unable to rate them. This is anecdotal of course, but if I see someone else has already made a post similar to one I would have made, I will neither rate that post nor make a post myself.
A good point, I agree.
I see what you mean with gauging the quality of a post, but I would wager that it’s almost always for the worst. This can be seen especially in polidicks where the rating system reinforces hive minds and discourages dissenting opinions - eg a user who is indifferent to an issue may see a particular post with lots of agrees and another post with lots of dumbs, and assumes that the post with the agrees is the ‘correct’ opinion.
really hope that everyone makes it across if we do make a new forums. i have a time capsule "buried" in the glove box of my car waiting until 2027 to be opened with hundreds of messages from facepunchers.

Hahaha How The Fuck Do Ratings Mean Anything Nigga Close Your Eyes Haha
I agree, google has great quality. That's something I will not miss on a new forum, linking stuff being a pain in the ass.
I have to agree with this post my good sir
literally every forum software has User CP toggles for viewing signatures. if we didn't do things because one person didn't like the idea of it, nothing would ever get done, just like this theoretical new forum.
@Hezzy Post funny responses please.
Doesn't take a few brains cells to know forum sigs are for children.
Reminds me of the time some guy came on with an Xbox 360 he wrote FP usernames from '09 onto.
I very much disagree with your opinion.
agreed
i honestly wonder how the male/female ratio on FP has changed over the years. I bet there's way more women now but I have no data
Or people could just not post if they have nothing of value to contribute. Everyone replying to my post with “I disagree.” may think they are being cheeky and making some kind of clever point, but I sincerely doubt that would happen in practice if ratings were removed. And even if they did post those comments, so what? So many formerly active threads and sections are dead these days. If people were forced to write comments rather than having the option of a rating, then who knows; some of those threads and sections might come back to life, as I believe posters would make the most of their posts by injecting a bit more of their own perspective than they otherwise would if they only rated.
People could also just ignore trolls but we know how well that turns out. You do realize that one of the reasons (other than an infestation of trolls and alts) that MD closed was due to inactivity, right? The high standards put forth in general were a large part of the problem.
This post reminds me Bring back Zing
You mean the forum that got one post every 4 months? Prime example of a working forum with no issues.
No matter what happens to our forum, I'll be happy as long as we have the FP Community, even if wherever we hang out may lack a few features we're used to. Also Re: Forum Signatures Signatures are dumb, ugly and wastes of space. Still stand by what I said in Inacio's Notpunch thread a few weeks back: "I love Newpunch's profile card backgrounds, it's like a more subtle and tasteful successor to the Forum Signatures of old."
People love to say "ratings dont matter" and "if you care about them you're a baby" but I really do feel they help make the place have more personality, because ratings show that different people have different opinions about shit. Not to mention the useless clutter that would ensue if you couldn't rate posts like the one you made earlier.
They were obstructive 90% of the time though
Wasn't that the point though? (Ex: Tudd)
all custom titles were used for was advertising and harassment lmao
I liked zing but tbh i think it incentivized snarky comeback responses a little too much to the point where it seemed like some posters built their entire identity on being a smartass
Oh dear god letting you spend coins to ban someone sounds like a hilarious nightmare
