The Photoshop Contest section was golden and had some of the the funniest shit
Jesus F. Christ on a mangy pony. I want to see that.
We used to have our own subzone for anything Valve related ( to the point other sub-subzones like the TF2 and L4D ones appeared as well ) were modders could share their work and even discover new mods ( The Stanley Parable, JB3, Half-Payne and the cancelled HL2 Improvement mod and Tales from the Galacticom born here, among others ), then Garry decided to get rid all of them, then a sorta new Valve zone appeared only to finally lose it again. Now anything Valve related either is lost in the mess of Games, or Developers. Homo- and Transphobia were everywhere, which years of internal fighting and newer moderators have removed large chunks of it. However a hardcore "stealth" group remains ( easily seen on any LGBT thread related and looking at the ratings, but sometimes they post articles on SH ). Hate against feminism-related stuff is still sadly a problem, as stereotypes goes rampant and is easy to see threads about it ( mostly in SH ) filled with unrelated nonsense hate. FP had several "dark" periods, which the most infamous one is very likely to be the "Tudd era": Tudd and many of his followers "against free speech censorship" posted daily xeno-, islamo- and LGBTphobe articles ( this also started with the beginning of the mass emigration of refugees towards Europe ), and as you can imagine all of them were full of shit. Somehow moderators blinked an eye to these actions, either "for not being really bannable enough" or even "promotes discussion". It was so ridiculous that very often users who argued with him/them ended being banned ( and a couple ones ended being permabanned ) for bare minimum infractions, while Tudd / them could effectively be inmunne to the rules. Eventually after years of mass complaints due this, he only ended being permabanned after "accidentaly" recognizing in Discord that he was actually trolling, and with his fall, soon followed the rest of their partners. No moderator or Garry has apologized for this, and threads asking for this / extra information ended either closed or with the user banned. In the end, the people only wanted to end it and move along. Once, we had a mass attack which resulted in the leak of passwords of everyone. I barely remember the details of it, I think it happened through a moderator. I don't remember, but you can see warnings of that if your email was used here when checking at that IwasPwnd? website. People used to make a great fuss about Flagdog ( a system that showed a flag from where you posted ) because it tended to be erroneous ( wasn't hard to see people posting on remote islands or even Antartica ). The newer system that checks from where are you posting seems 100% effective. We miss ratings like Optimistic ( a rainbow ) and Useful ( wrench ). On the first days of NewPunch we had a very creepy one called Child Molester, which after mass protests it was removed. During a time, FP disabled ratings in order to combat "mass ratings" ( actually it has another name but I can't remember it now ), as people tends to rate a post without reading it ( especially with Dumb ratings ), but ended causing even more problems, people arguing each other. I guess we have a problem with reading comprehension. The model subzone ( nowadays their threads are within Developers ) had more threads about modeling tips and sharing work, but towards 2011-2012 threads about ripping models multiplicated exponentially to the point the others practically disappeared. We also attracted a large number of terrible modders who not only stealed work from others and passed them as theirs, but also going into stalking / harrassing, insulting and threatening both here and outside. Some changed for the best, others thankfully were permabanned. ( IDK if is still active ) there was a "FP Wiki" about users that as you can imagine it was very creepy, with people going as far as picking photos from other social media and even stalking them. I think remember Postal and Garry had to act on a couple of times. Garry and Postal deleted across the years instantly users and all their posts due requests by the FBI. Ultra rare, but happened ( and in an ocasion in one thread a message "this user was deleted by request of the FBI" or something like that lingered where these deleted posts were, it made everybody freak with such rare thing ). Gold status were desired back at then because it allowed you have the avatar size limit removed or vastly expanded and having gifs. At first it was done by donating, then by being around X years ( it was 5? ), then to being around for several years and being around 2500 posts I think?. I remember getting mine only several days later to remove these priviledges, I was mad We really used to be more diverse, with different subzones as other users have already said, with the latest changes and overall, the move to NewPunch we lost a lot of traffic. Once, someone somehow managed to enable signatures ( like you see in other forums ), happened in a Gmod thread I think remember, he ended being instantly permabanned I think.
no i wasn't that's slander
This was a hot minute ago but one time Hezzy (I think) got replaced by an ultra wholesome user called the Ministry of Love or something who just wanted to spread good vibes to all Former mod TH89 used to make pretty solid music, including one song that was just making fun of a user here. Idk how appropriate it would be to post that particular song but I still listen to his stuff sometimes Custom subforums gave this place a way different environment. I actually joined FP initially because one of my friends frequented the RP subforum and wanted me to join a STALKER roleplaying thread with him over a decade ago. I did that for a little bit, left for some time, and when I came back all subforums were gone and the culture had changed pretty significantly. I agree with whoever mentioned earlier on how it sucks the STALKER thread has kinda fizzled out too - I never posted in it much but one person (Beacon?) was a really talented mod creator + they used to do occasional drawings of all the regulars in one big pic. It was cute and even as a lurker I miss the positive community vibes it had. Also if anyone here hasn't heard DJ Dong's masterwork please treat yourself now
Lots of the best Facepunch moments of old have pretty much all been listed, though I consider the Bitstrips Comics thread big enough to be worth mentioning. 7 years ago an online anti-bullying campaign was launched where school kids could make anti-bullying comics on a website and post them to win a contest. The comic maker on the website was actually pretty well designed, and someone brought it to FP's attention. Suddenly we had a big thread of people making absolutely nonsensical comics and doing the exact opposite of what was expected with the comic maker. People used the comic editor to do things like making a dog play a saxophone, to recreating movie scenes, to creating goatse.exe. It lasted for quite a while, and eventually some of the users even had a little FP centered story going where they all posted comics aimed towards each other. It was fun stuff.
I remember when the forums posting system was run by a grammar nazi AI. Any mistakes in spelling and grammar would result in warnings and bans. It really made my 14 year old self a good writer in highschool.
I think it was a mod's account was compromised and they posted a global sticky with a script embedded in the title of it.
Some notable users I can remember: MaxofS2D is a french 3D animator who formerly modded for FP. Everyone fucking hated him because he was very very feminist and more importantly, banned peopole all the fucking time for what he saw as sexist or bigoted comments. Eventually he was removed and permabanned. But not before making a video that I don't think still exists on the internet, where he narrated a dramatic post I made about taking the worst shit in the universe while only half conscious and in pure agony. Shenanigansen, as mentioned before. Drew comics instead of text posting. Went on to make owlturd. Cool dude. Hats off to the PRUDE moderators back in like 2011 who got pissy about it instead of letting him draw more goofy comics as responses. Tudd, I mentioned him before. Massive shithead and resident alt righter. Mods didn't want to ban him because they didn't want to be intolerant of differing opinions but he was one of the most disingenuous debaters you've ever seen. The thing was that Tudd was a master of being just enough of an asshole that he couldn't really be banned by any rules, and rarely did he ever, even though the ENTIRE fucking website was sick of him. He was even briefly made a moderator and kept a moderator sized pepe avatar for a long time as a result. I forget what caused it but eventually he did slip up like all alt righters do on this forum and got banned permanently for being an ass. Tropsical Guy was fucking awesome. He was a foreign dude who had this horrid english and odd posting mannerisms like always signing off on his posts with "thanks,, tropsical guy". Many would consider him the purest among us. Eventually I think he got banned or, just stopped posting. The Big Bomb is a dude who posted an amazingly bad thread in which he detailed a wet dream he had about a girl in his class, where he and his friends team up on her. An excerpt; "My dream involved me sticking my pregnancy stick in her mouth, and forcefeeding her. My friend James was ramming her up the ass. Alec was up the vagina. and Dan was boobies" Everyone immediately found this fucking hilarious and incredibly creepy and since he used the real names of and I think even a picture of these people, the girl was found and told about. I kinda feel bad about that because while it is fucking hilarious I'm sure he cringes about it to this day. Doug was a dude who was absolutely dedicated to taking over Facepunch. Now that I think about it it was probably the same dude like twice and a bunch of alt account memes thereafter, but the message was always the same. Change the name to Dougpunch, and let him rule all. Mein Bratwurst was a dude who I don't know much about other than the one post. That One. There was this news article about a Boy laid to rest in Sonic the Hedgehog coffin after he drowned. Two posts of oh that's so sad later, Mein Bratwurst comes in and dunks on everyone by posting the Sonic drowning music. You can still see the post but I swear there used to be over a thousand ratings (probably broke when newpunch happened). Everyone's reaction fell in to one of 3 camps; vicious laughter, vicious laughter with a shot of I'm going straight to hell, or "THAT IS SO FUCKING DISRESPECTFUL" The thread never got over it. There was a dude who's name I forget who had Obama visit his school and he asked Obama on video about Facepunch. Obama was confused, we all got to feel cool for a few minutes. There was one user, Joecool, who got massively fucking smashed, and proceeded to play Oblivion. When he woke up he remembered nothing and found half of fucking Tamriel utterly destroyed overnight. He then documented his findings and shared it with us. Smurfy archived the thread here. If you've never read it, I highly recommend it. I can't think of anymore super funny ones right now, but I'll post more later if I do. For now I'll give a shoutout to the old members of STGYM who supported me when I was a depressed and cringy teenager. In particular there's Filmslacker. Filmslacker is just a regular poster but to me he's notable because even though he's in Canada and I'm in the buttfuck south US, the both of us basically grew up together and became close friends, offering each other support with our shitty families. He had a stepdad that was legendarily horrible and abusive, I was trans and stuck in a viciously unsupportive family. One thing that makes me happy is knowing that both of us have grown up and escaped those shitty situations. IDK what he's up to lately but last I checked he was living a stressful but independent life and I'm on HRT and living fully as a girl. Just kind of something sweet and it goes to show how much FP can mean to people. There's also users who I still talk to to this day like Profhappycat and Scorpionstyng. I've even seen a lot of people fall in love with other people on this forum, including me. I actually dated someone from FP for 6 years and moved in with them. I won't talk about it in detail unless people wanna hear it since it's more personal and less FP history but suffice to say (it didn't go well)
Fuck, on TH89, I recognize that tune he spun into that song at 2:19. Where is that from? I know it was something related to the internet, anyone got an idea? Also I never knew he kept an online presence. His stuff is pretty good.
have some old screenshots from fp, just to feel old. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/57917/0c2e0bf6-cdad-4321-8552-011c16b23036/554588.png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/57917/fa261550-f083-410a-8d20-285c24d8ea0c/image.png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/57917/55c24179-260d-471a-995f-10b194077007/60ea30c7-c11b-1d42-9714-4b8a3182fc54.png
"Need help with a few models" -Xabin, 2016. Never forget.
I really miss the 'edit things onto this picture of a gun' Stuff like a dildo bayonet or a cup-holder attachment on the butt of the gun, or a knife coming out of the scope.
People didn't used to give a shit about ratings and you were told to suck it up if you got triggered over them, but now you can actually get banned for it, apparently.
There used to be a section called "Refugee Camp" where you could attempt to reverse or shorten a ban (or throw a temper tantrum). A banned user could only see their own threads in there, while Mods and Gold Members could see everybody's. Golds technically had the ability to post in RC threads, but they'd get banned for it. I think they eventually got it so that golds could view but not post, but I'm not 100% certain. Golds also were able to rate posts in the RC, which was sometimes the equivalent of pouring gas on a fire when certain users were having hissy fits. They took ratings away, and RC threads were slightly less funny (though still pretty funny).
ggodd i miss the refugee camp this site used to have so many small little traps (posting in rc, idiot culls, banned users getting mad over ratings) that either made you a smarter person or gave you a spectacle to laugh at I also think it helped alleviate mods getting ptsd, because they could show gold members just how fucking stupid x user was.
Insensitive ratings on particularly sensitive posts have been bannable for several years now. Rating a post winner when it's someone talking about how they tripped over their own shoelace and dropped their ice cream, yeah probably not a big deal. Rating winner or diamond on a post where, random example out of my ass, the focus of the post is that a natural disaster has killed 40 people of some particular ethnicity, yeah that's not funny or cool anymore. The Rust forum used to spill over into other parts of the forum a lot more often, and the worst part was that before Rust went on Steam in December 2013, 99% chance that the Rust kiddie shitting up the forum outside their designated pigsty didn't even own a serial key to the game and was begging for one. This was made worse when a facepuncher streamer with, inexplicably, about 30,000 Russian kids as an audience, told them to post That Cat for a free Rust key as a joke and didn't expect a decent number of them to actually do it. Posting That Cat used to be a way of saying "permaban me" because the image was so obnoxiously large. https://i.imgur.com/daDfEe3.gifv Facepunch also used to allow advertising Rust servers, but only in a designated subforum that had strict posted rules and still became an unusable spamfest, with the record being I think one guy making 41 threads for his stupid server in a span of less than 8 hours. postal started deleting the threads before banning him and discovered he'd made another one since postal had started. The above animation is a scroll through postal conducting one weekly clean-out of the Rust servers subforum. Also, that's the ticker. We had a ticker on oldpunch, a feed of new posts, as well as ratings on your posts and various events (new accounts, bans, post deletions, threadlocks, people mentioning your name, etc.). It was a handy way of keeping up on what was going on on FP, especially if a live event thread was happening somewhere and you didn't know from browsing the forum indexes. Newpunch supports replies/mentions/coins in the notification bell, but there's no firehose of posts that I know of. https://i.imgur.com/RNolPzK.png Once in a while the ticker was not so useful because it looked something like this. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/2304/bcbc3092-0c20-4cf6-be39-e8e014ef23f3/image.png
Now 444 users here. How many users were there in old forums
It's funny how this one guy who keeps getting banned and making more alts is more obsessed with Facepunch's past than... anyone else here. Old Facepunch is dead history and things are never going back to the way they were. That's life; experience the now, don't try and revive the past.

OIFY existed
Never forget the day that a brave warrior known in legends as "Feeble Oaf" commited a grave act of seppeku to shut down Oify once and for all - a dream that many have tried to do but failed. All failed, Except Oaf. Some of us still have a hole in our hearts from the act. But well, That's the way it is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdW5-uJqCVY
hold on now, you're telling me Iago and Jouska were the same person? I'm gonna have to add this, but as far as I know when you delete Newpunch accounts the posts get removed because GDPR. Without that post, I can't really do much.
does anyone have the photos from that thread where the guy said he needed the picture of him and his dad photoshopped? he ended up getting really mad at all the edits people made
Don't forget the GMF incident were Garry gave some kid mod allowing him to get his revenge on bullies here on FP. Or the time FP kept crashing due to massive amounts of traffic, because pre-release Crysis 2 screenshots/video were leaked on here.
