If Hezzy's intention was to hand over the discord to FP Studios to see how they'd like to use it, then why did he see fit to advertise an alternative site?
If he had the reverence to hand over the server, built largely on Garry's player base and IP notoriety, why tarnish the act by injecting his own suggestion?
Yeah this pretty much. I'm at work and i just unlocked my phone to see this explode with so much hyper activity and people getting all worked up and excited.
I definitely don't want to stop moderating this place but I also want to moderate Knockout too. I definitely didn't want to just jump ship immediately.
I don't mean that as an insult. I was under the impression that Hezzy had given this to you as an advanced directive, and not that this was an attempt to soothe fears with what little information is currently available. I sincerely apologize for any misunderstandings, but the point still stands that it would have been nice to hear this from Hezzy himself, either now or during the absolute clusterfuck that was the Discord when everyone was in a panic.
Oh no, I passed out about five hours ago and woke up to all of this happening.
Thank you Mods for trying to maintain some peace for what is a genuinely sad and confusing time for us users.
We greatly appreciate your efforts to keep our community together.
I'm planning something soon which will be a joyous celebration of this forum.
I was out of the loop on the Knockout stuff until today, but honestly I think it's a good idea to get ahead of things, rip the bandaid off now and get over to Knockout before the axe falls. It's pointless hanging around here with the Sword of Damocles over our heads waiting to be told our fate. If it turns out the community isn't ready to do it yet then at least we have the emergency plan ready and we can stay here until it does happen.
The work that's already been done on KO is amazing, and the software features we never got from Newpunch are actually possible now with an active dev team. Ultimately like @Vilusia said, it's the community that matters, not the name or the forum software. I've always thought that the link to a game developer was a great way of providing a constant flow of new users, but if the developer doesn't want us anymore then what else can we do?
I don't want to go.
Nothing happens when I try to login to Knockout
We set out to solve the uncertainty of "where do I go if Facepunch disappears?"
So if that ever happens, now you know where you can go.
I wish I could've made it to the ten year mark, as I was so close. But I guess I'll still be able to celebrate since December 2, 2019 will still mark ten years since I became part of this awesome community.
Special shoutout to @Silverlan , whose work in Gmod inspired me to make an account here in the first place.

Does anyone know WHY Garry doesn't care about his community anymore? I'd be damned proud to have created a community as great and as long lasting as FP. What changed?
He's simply lost interest in the forums and his community.
He probably just feels like he's paying for someone else's playground at this stage, because he's so uninvolved.
You guys are basically heroes.

Knockout makes it sound like a boxing forum
What ab knockback
You've had 6 months to suggest names
I suppose you're right but I think alot of us are really just starting to hear about it now
Knockout is a fantastic idea, but the execution so far as been... lackluster.
The design shift from nupunch to Knockout isn't going to work. I'm getting tired of this "dark theme everywhere" shtick. The site also looks like it could be reduced in size by about 20-30% and would look much better (case in point) - the design is great for tablets, but I'm not using a tablet. I'm using a computer, I have much better fine clicking abilities than with a touch device, so having such large elements is pointless and obtuse. Props to bringing back the two column design though.
Secondly, despite whatever you want to call this, this is probably the worst possible way to have generated a shift to Knockout. The forums going down for [unspecified reason] is one thing, but nuking the discord and telling everyone "it's nunupunch time now" was an absolute PR disaster. You literally made it look like a coup.
Third, and probably most importantly, creating a schism like this is pointless. Facepunch lost enough members/postrate with the nupunch shift, and shifting again to another website entirely is going to lose even more - i'm guesstimating 60-70% (primarily lurkers). People are naturally resistant to change. Personally, I'd recommend alleviating this with an "oldpunch" design. At least giving them something close to how it used to be would ease in the transition of moving websites entirely (at least the facepunch -> nupunch shift was relatively clean with some advance notice).
Garry knows full and well that he can open source nupunch via Facepunch Studios (assuming he didn't use any proprietary dependencies, which when i give a cursory glance, he hasn't), and let someone else spawn a nununupunch. Why he doesn't, and why he refuses to update the forums anymore, well, to be honest you can't say that we're not partially to blame for that.
-Light theme's being worked on
-There's width and thickness options if you have an account (use a throwaway google)
-The discord was locked because Hezzy was fired and doesn't want to run it anymore
-Classic skin will be worked on
Themes are already implemented, and more is to come in regards to visual customization.
This was Hezzy's decision. He runs the FP discord, and decided to temporarily close it while it's being handed to FP staff.
It's not nuked. It's more "paused" than anything. I expect it'll be back up in a few days.
Facepunch is already past its expiry date.
Garry has multiple times said he considers taking down the site because he feels the cost isn't worth it.
He was going to make a decision "early this year", but so far we've heard literally nothing. Being proactive and creating a solid alternative is the only way moving forward in the face of this uncertainty.
Nothing has changed with Facepunch however. Garry is silent as usual. You're free to stay here, and we'll keep moderating it - we've just taken the steps necessary to ensure a future for the community when the forum suddenly disappears.
(Also, an oldpunch theme is in the works, IIRC)
This was the first thing we tried many months back. He's sadly rejected any sort of collaborative approach.
I kind of wish the new forums were called facekick
Alright, I literally just woke up and everything seems to be on fire, can someone please give me the rundown of what just happened?
I don't understand this sort of hysteria. I know it's clear to most by now, but there was literally no coup, hostile takeover or genuine attempt to create schism. No one has any malice in doing what they're doing. The forum is literally dying, and we all need to accept that and start to move over. If you have no intentions of moving over, that's fine, but I don't think that many people in the community wants to wait by until the website is actually, fully dead before beginning to integrate the community over. There may not be any community left, by then.
As a personal aside, I don't understand why some are pushing the idea that an early move to KO is a bad idea. Newpunch is now literally a dead end, no where to grow, stagnating community growth and absolutely no development. I have some serious nostalgia going for facepunch as well, but at the moment I'm more concerned with where the community will be next.
Check scaling options in the settings.
Themes are already implemented, and more is to come in regards to visual customization.
I don't want to have to sign in with a Google Account to be able to have a visually appealing website/be able to change skins. Obviously different strokes for different folks, but people have mirrored the sentiment that the design definitely needs work.

I agree that this might not have been the best way to go about things, however.
I understand that Hezzy has been the volunteer community head for the past couple months, and that the burden of choice was on him. Call it what you want: "nuked", "paused", "everybody shut the fuck up", but like you said, he's chosen... poorly on how to handle this.

Garry's lack of communication is up to interpretation. Whether he's silently letting us be or we're just waiting for another subway rage incident, nobody can say for certain. Whether the forum will go out with a bang from garry, or slide silently into the night, again, nobody knows. I'll remain here as long as possible (i really only come to FP for the filtered news anyway, since I stopped playing Gmod like... 4 years ago).
Yes, he was. He's no longer an FP employee (as stated in the link you shared), he just runs the forum & discord with no contract or pay.
Let's not be disingenuous about it. Hezzy was employed by FP for a few months to lead the FP forum community, which turned out to be a big nothingburger (despite a huge community chest fund), and then FP laid him off. He then agreed to stay as the community head unpaid.
What's happening, and where we're going from here
I'm not trying to create hysteria (and neither are the people echoing what I said). What I said was "made it look like", not "It's a coup". Anyone who's not actively engaged in the community (lurkers, primarily, and the probably tens to hundreds of people who will be asking "what happen" in the next couple days) will look at this from the outside and see Green names/Mods telling everyone to go to X and no discussion is allowed on the topic (Discord). You can't honestly tell me that an outsider's perspective on that would make it look like some kind of a takeover.
You're free to think what you want of nupunch (current). If you think that Knockout is somehow going to alleviate the community problems that Facepunch has (stagnant member growth, shitposting to the MAX, mods being mods), then you're going to be in for a sore surprise. I just honestly can't see an exodus to another site, this time not even owned by FP.
I'm free to think what I want of nupunch?
Buddy. It's going to close down. It's not really something up for dispute or opinion. Knockout isn't going to solve everything, but we can't even start to look at fixing any of the problems we have on a website that could literally go down at any moment, and never come back up.
Thank you. I've had a tough time getting to where I am especially with my almost 1 year hiatus but I'm proud to have been a Facepunch member and moderator as well as a knockout moderator too and I have plenty of years in me left.
Yeah it's gonna end - whether that's today, the day after tomorrow, any time, I don't know. If I spent every day worrying about when FP is going to turn off the lights, I'd be a schizophrenic mess. I've seen countless communities come and go, some of which I was an integral part of, some of which I wasn't, so call me jaded. As I said before I primarily only came to FP for the relatively unbiased news.
You're free to think whatever of nupunch, and I'm free to think whatever of Knockout. I enjoy the current state of affairs as I see them. Facepunch is a sinking ship sure, but until the lights turn off for good, I'll be here.
