• Forum Discussion VII: We had a good run

So yeah, if someone hasn't already, it might be time to back up all iconic threads. not just OPs but whole threads.
You point out three problems that Facepunch Forums currently has: Stagnant Member Growth; Shitposting "to the MAX"; and Mods being Mods I will say that I agree FP has some problems, but I disagree with two of the ones you presented and will suggest some other problems that may be more pressing. Problem 2 isn't a problem. Shitposting has always had a very special place in the heart of this forum, and for the most part we have been able to dedicate specific places as outlets for that sort of things. Setting aside LMAO pics, where humor is explicitly the point, we have had places like OIFY in the past to quarantine that sort of behavior. Where it spills out the Mods have always been on point to catch it before it gets too out of hand. Shitposting rarely gets out of hand here in any significant way, and if anything I personally feel that FP has struck a perfect balance in that regard. Problem 3, similarly, isn't a problem. The mods have been a constant force in this forum that have helped it become what it is. You may see a decaying husk with shitposting and 'mods being mods' but I see a delicately balanced system of people that adds up to a unique and vibrant community. Facepunch used to be known as one of the strictest forums on the internet, and that is the reason why you can't really compare it to current day SA, reddit, or 4chan. It has become its own thing, with its own balance, and that is because the Mods have been what they are. Yes, they haven't always been perfect, but they are as much a key ingredient in the FP I love as much as anything else. So, setting those aside, let me suggest some other problems: We do not actually have enough information about the fate of these forums. Due to the lack of communication from garry, speculation has ranged from the possibility of this forum closing down any day, to the possibility of it just continuing as though nothing happened. A problem is that the person in charge of all of this is unavailable for comment, and as such planning for the future of the community can only be based on speculation As a result of the last point, there is somewhat of a hysteria currently going on. Faced with uncertainty, people are reacting with actions in hopes to save the community they love so much. People care deeply for this community, and by extension for eachother. When uncertainty is combined with such a level of care, sometimes people do not behave in an optimal way. Nobody is perfect, but without an ability to stick together as a unit, we will crumble. People need to both relax and take seriously the real possibility that this forum might fall. We do not have the power to act. If members of our community had any real power or say in the matter, this wouldn't be such a big problem. As it stands, however, all that can be done is pooling efforts in order to set-up a lifeboat for ourselves. We cannot perform any migrations, nor can we take the facepunch name with us because Garry could disown us as a community. All that is left for us to do is stay resolute in our love for this corner of the internet, enjoy it while it lasts, and be prepared for the worst. All in all, facepunch is a unique place. There is no real comparison that can be draw to other sites, certainly not anymore. Genuine discussion, genuine community, relatively strict standards, combined with a perfect sprinkle of shitposting, and a complex history to boot. The culture built up at facepunch is worth saving. We are going through a transition period, but that doesn't mean we won't make it through.

Same thing I've done. Nothing. http://horobox.co.uk/u/reag/2019-03-30_06-30-21.png
I hope this is worth at least a tenth of a cent
Just put it all into avatar height and width and make it massive
Well that, and he complained when the community evolved into something he didn't like.
It was a good run.
it was ok
Had a good twelve years lurking here. See you all on Knockout whenever the plug does get pulled
Facepunch didn't die, it was murdered.
This might be a stupid question but how do you register on Knockout? All i can do is sign in with Google but i don't see any option to choose a nickname.
That's the first thing you get redirected to after clicking sign in with google
Knockout is the next step for the Facepunch community. We've all been waiting practically forever to hear whether or not the forums will shut down. Last night we finally decided to pull the trigger, rather than wait for the forums to wither and die until a decision is made. The Moderator team and I have been planning and discussing Knockout for the best part of 4 months. We're moving over to Knockout now, rather than waiting for the undecided plug pulling event in the vague future and we hope you will join us. I understand there'll be a few hardcore people who stay here, or people who come here for gmod / rust related stuff and that's fine. I know a handful of Moderators are staying so this place isn't going to be abandoned. It'll be up to the company to arrange replacements. The situation with the Discord is temporary until somebody from the company gets in touch with me to take it over.
I got redirected to the main forum index. Clicking on the link to Knockout brings me to a page to choose a nickname and it claims to let me select an avatar: https://i.imgur.com/az0wvtx.png No avatar option though.
oh snap look at this hostile take over. I'm gonna miss some of this forum's functionality. boy this feels like something EGS would be doing
Click on your username in the top right corner after registering and you'll be able to change it
It's just super weird that we've gone from "we're so close to being shut down please be nice guys!!" and "let's profusely and loudly praise Garry's site so as to appease him!!" to something that basically forces him to think about the forums and will probably come off as a slight against him
You make it sound like this was over the space of a week but in fact was around June last year
man this sucks, i just got gold last year after 7-8 years haha. anyways it was a good run and i hope to see yall on knockout. gg, facepunch.
so is everyone planning on posting on knockout exclusively at the moment or posting here until it actually dies?
I'm moving over to Knockout, just popping in here every now and again to answer any relevant questions
honestly we all should be. It's going to blow and my only prayer is that at least large chunks of the forum can be archived if only in a read-only state. Like there'd still be stuff we lose anyways, DDT threads and Oify but look, oify should never be archived because it's like a fart - fun when it happens but stinky afterwards and DDT threads? I actually forgot about them until five seconds ago.
At the beginning. DDT DID actually exist on here, believe it or not. Don't remember why we removed it, probably because we didn't need to use it for anything. Forum permissions here when it comes to deletion basically nulled it's point. DDT was only around for archiving the very best of threads. I still have some of those screenshots actually. Let me do some digging and I'll grab some old gold.
Don't worry about archiving. I know of at least 2 people who have up to date archives of the entire visible forum.
Does he act like this with his family
