• Forum Discussion VII: We had a good run

We really should have just waited until FP had the plug pulled before making any major switches to KO. Preparing for the switch is a good idea, but now the community is just divided between 2 forums since most of the mods are on KO, but a lot of people who aren't as in the loop or just don't want to switch are still on Facepunch. For all we know Garry might just leave Facepunch forums in limbo for eternity because it's clear at this point that any of his opinions regarding the site are less than rational.
Agreed, this transitional period between here and there is mildly annoying what with peoples attentions spread across the two it's hard to know which one to browse for now, where post? What post? Do I double post on both forums? This redundancy annoys me.
It doesn't seem like they actually want to just pull the plug though I am not sure we can solve this problem
The idea is to make sure a majority is aware of the place in the event that FP just goes poof one day. No doubt this whole situation of FP shutting down sucks, but this is the best we can do about it. Either KOC would remain sort of obscure, or we would have to be proactive and bring it to attention - which was definitely not going to be liked by 100% of users. So yeah I get you. It's a bit bothersome to have both at the moment. At the pace KOC is going, it'll be a no-brainer to switch eventually. And when/if FP dies, you now know of a similar place that welcomes you.
Honestly, between the discord, multiple announcement threads, and general word of mouth, there should be no way people aren't aware of KO and how it's the refugee camp for when FP burns. There shouldn't be any obligation to use KO until that day.
All these account deletions are bumming me out
What account deletions? Sorry I'm a little out the loop atm
A few users (or one user with lots of posts) must've deleted their account using the User Account deletion feature, which is why a bunch of threads are losing user posts at the moment.
this is what I think. Don't ever see myself going over to knockout, but I've got no intention or reason to leave here until the point I literally can't access it anymore. feel like none of this should have happened until we were literally told "btw fp is getting shut down next week" or something.
Another thing with people moving over to KO is how is going to be kept up and running, funding wise? These forums have a game company keeping it up so the chance of the funds disappearing is pretty slim considering this forum has been up for over 15 years, including switching server providers (remember when Garry hosted it on a server in the office??) What's not to say one to two years down the line with everyone jumping ship to KO, the costs increase to run it to the point it can't be funded by the person running it (even with the mysterious "community fund") With a system these forums had in the past (Boostar) I can imagine it will be incredibly difficult to manage payments from people across the world to keep it up and running.
Nobody should assume we'll get a week's notice. Garry has suddenly pulled stuff before. He's done it on this forums too with the removal of the video section and removing of the full statistics page. I hate to be that person about it but I honestly don't think we'd get a week's notice or even a days notice. He MAY just do it.
Speaking of which where'd all that money go anyway?
Yeah, and then about 10% of users here even hear about Knockout before FP closes
Hezzy still has it and some of it is being spent on Knockout
not entirely correct. hezzy has offered it (bless his beautiful heart) but so far its coming out of my pocket and from Northern Light's (one of the devs) i really appreciate the offer and the guarantee that we won't go down for a very, very long time but i'd rather keep it afloat without using fp-related money (unless there was a consensus that it's fine) answers this too: it costs $10 now and will cost $15 with a redundancy machine. it's going to be fine. i have a job and other people involved do too.
I wonder how much gayry spends on FP per month.. That's like 75% of his argument for shutting this fine place down.
i did some napkin math a couple weeks ago and taking growth into account we have 122 months of funding if we only depended on the community fund. much much longer than that with me and other people's money. and we have some (non-greedy) ideas for extra capital if needed some of which i actually really hecking like and am excited for, surprisingly it's going to be fine.
Can't get the thing to login using google, I choose which google account to use in the box and then it just closes the popup box and nothing happens. It says to add exceptions but add them to where and how?
it's quite a weird thing, yeah. i followed google's instructions but it behaves differently on knockout and requires explicit exceptions. i think it'd be best if you asked on the notpunch thread or on discord as to not fill this thread with (even more) knockout stuff
The only current expense is renting out Azure server time, which the rest of Facepunch's websites run on anyway, so keeping FP up might literally cost nothing extra.
why did ratings get big again armageddon is no excuse for bad design choices !
Hell the move to these forums happened entirely without warning. People asked about it and Hezzy said he expected the move 'within a couple of months', about 30 minutes later the move started. He was technically correct at least.
Having all the mods stop moderating here in advance doesn't do anything to actually advertise knockout.
Wait shit you're right. I totally forgot about D-Day. Christ that was bad.
Well, you'll notice a lot of us are still here dude
I agree. Good thing that's not happening.

What did you do lol
wait... how?
but I've been here for 13 years.
