Sorry, this is some pretty big bullshit. An opinion cannot be summarized by a small icon. Opinions can be very nuanced, complex, flexible and thoughtful. How can you possible interpret an opinion with a box icon? People can rate something for a variety of reasons. The worst are people that constantly comment on fucking ratings and make them an issue. If I see a thread that has some sensitive crap in the newssection, I don't judge the original post by the amount of ratings but by the post or source itself. I think ratings are generally a good way of giving a user more exposure, for instance if somebody posts something funny or extremely awful. It's immediately reflected by the ratings and that's alright. But those people who start to argue "Why are you posting me dumb for my opinion!!11!" and start the whole nonsensical discussion. I still want to rate something funny or dumb, even if the topics are sensitive or if it is in bad taste. It's impossible to take ratings at a face value.
I can see the appeal to both approaches of ratings. If we make ratings anonymous, it results in less petty drama about how "This user rated my post like this" or "This user always rates posts like this" which results in people rating that person's posts a certain way just because they rate others a certain way. Building up pre-conceived notions just from ratings is not really a good thing. Having them anonymous also makes the rating seem like an overall group or thread mentality, instead of just whoever is in the thread at the time. This can be good or bad depending on how you view it. However, if we make ratings associated with the name, in theory, it would make people actually think before they post a rating, because there's actual responsibility behind the rating you give. No doubt, it also does make it easier to identify legit rating shitters. Alternatively, we can just ditch ratings all together so people can stop hiding behind their boxes, babies, and red Xs and actually discuss why they feel a certain way about a post. I'm all for more actual discussion in threads, though I'm in no way saying this should actually be done. Here come the boxes, babies, and disagrees.
Can we instead opt for social media's baby mode where there's only positive ratings and any disagreements can be met with actual confrontation instead of hit and run ratings.
we're going to give anonymous ratings (but mods can see who rated what) to try and make it the best of both worlds. it's just a test, we'll see how it goes. no ratings at all on News and/or Politics is also something we've discussed, but let's see how anonymous ratings work first.
I do not get this sentiment of hit and run tactics with ratings? It's an icon underneath your post, the fact that you mentioned about the prenotion is definitely something that is very true. That said, in most cases you have a few users that always rate the same rating to a specific user. In that case, it's an issue of the person itself abusing ratings, that should be resolved instead of removing ratings. I do not think that the amount of "rating shitters" is that high, sure you get the occaisonal one that is totally misplaced but that is about it, it's just misplaced and can easily be dismissed. One exception might be extremely controversial topics such as gunlaws, which are universally already a clusterfuck by itself. Sorry, I am not sure if I am entirely following this issue but it's a superficial rating underneath your post, I do not see the issue with this or the fact that people "hide" behind those ratings. Honestly, I often rate posts because I am either to busy to formulate a post or because I do not have the time to read through pages of post, then posting a statement that is absolutely not of matter because the discussion evolved. Ratings are a neat shortcut and should be taken with a grain of salt anyway. If you think your credibility as a user and the quality of your posts are defined by ratings, that is pretty fucking dumb. I'm also for discussion but as soon as a major topic gets popular or extremely active, it's hard to follow actual discussions, especially if multiple people are involved. Ratings just help you to share your opinion in a superficial way, a vague sentiment.
This used to be the way it was, and it didn't really change anything other than making people upset about it.
Once I got rated dumb and my mum notice I looked sad
I love this quotes idea. I want to see it soon.
Hot take: What about if we just completely remove ratings because they're just some stupid little icon and people being bitchy children about them, on both sides of the issue, is more annoying than the people actually ratings trolling. Like, if we are supposed to give a shit about ratings then allow call-outs in threads for people rating shit and have bans from being able to rate and/or be able to issue bans for ratings. If we're not supposed to give a shit about ratings because they're stupid useless icons, then just tell people to toughen up and stop caring about some stupid icons and be done with it other than maybe a profile option to disable ratings.
I wonder how well a rating system that only has "positive" ratings would be received. So like agree, funny, friendly, winner, good idea, and informative. Having a Disagree seems intuitive but I feel like having to actually respond to someone when you disagree with them is more effective for a message board. Rating someone agree when you agree with them makes sense instead of having to make a post that is essentially "What he said", but disagreeing with someones post transmits no actual useful information. As for the rest, if you stop to think about it for a second, why do we even have stuff like dumb, baby, and snowflake? Seems needlessly antagonistic.
Solokiller rated your post with "Zing!".
Just keep Agree, Friendly and Diamond. Maybe keep funny. The rest can go.
late, dumb, baby, snowflake, asshole, bad reading, bad spelling and big woop

Upon seeing this, I have to admit that I am somewhat shocked and I would dismiss Cureless as a massive idiot. That said, I enjoyed the ratings system much more over since I joined in 2016 and I do not want to see it removed due to some faggot that has ignorant beliefs, nor do I want such people around here. You made a good point.
Personally I think it's ridiculous that we're even contemplating removing ratings just because a couple of jackasses use them to get reactions. They're fine the vast, vast majority of the time but one person is apparently all it take for some people to decide to throw the entire thing out.
None of the people with those opinions are in charge.
Cureless has been pbanned just now
and Chryseus nuked his account lol
Problem solved?
all is well
and windwakr too. i went through those users' posts and found that they were sufficient corroboration to their intent when rating. i still think it's absolutely stupid to get riled up by ratings, but when there are dozens of ratings that can be pretty easily interpreted as excessively edgy/borderline problematic it's time to take action. i did it on my own, but other mods have expressed their approval. if you're not rating in accordance with or posting your insane beliefs, it's fine. if you need to do it, fuck off to /pol/ or gab. this is not the place (and neither is knockout)
yessssss
Silly suggestion: to rate a post in a thread, you must participate in it at least once.
When I try to change my avatar I get this error: https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/223296/5d622ac5-bdce-47cd-8e82-abc4493b7a6d/image.png
I haven't been here for years and now inacio is a mod and the site is overhauled the site looks so different honestly
I missed you <3
woah you're still here hi sorry if this isn't the right place to freak out about how different the site is this is a lot to take in
There seem to be quite a few of us who rate stupid people like Cureless and Chryseus (not Windwakr because he was too much of a coward to ever actually post his shitty beliefs) funny most of the time they're acting like shining examples of why humanity being the most intelligent species on the planet means exactly nothing. If we went with your idea I'd go with agree, friendly, maybe sympathy (there's a ton of overlap with friendly there though so it's kinda superfluous), artistic, coin, diamond, and informative.
Optimistic needs to be brought back
