NoxiousNet, if just for the insane gamemodes it had back then. I'd spend hours playing retro fortwars with all the classes and base-building mechanics. It felt like the pinnacle of oldschool gmod back in the day.
The Clown Kettle Gaming server for TF2
Probably the main reason I have over 2000 hours in that game, was so much fun chilling with all the cool, interesting and varied people on there back in the day. I still remember days like staying up until midnight talking about surreal cinema with this guy studying film at university, one of the female mods !slapping this guy who kept saying sexist shit over voice until he reached the map's invisible ceiling then letting him fall to his death, spending hours on cyberpunk having fights over the dj booth, and all this other fun shit
one time a while after i started playing minecraft in early 2011 i found some random norwegian vanilla server that i loved playing on. i met someone on that server who told me that their username, case sensitive, as a world seed, would spawn you near a kinda neat lone island with no other land in sight
it turned out, im pretty sure, the server was hosted by its owner very close to where i live in some random coastal town
eventually the people who ran the server wanted to make it appeal to more international players which made me end up losing interest in the server, probably around the end of 2011. i kinda miss the server the way it was in its prime, and that one person who i could only contact on the server
Building tanks in Garry's mod left me with many good memories of that community. Everyone was always willing to help, and there was always fun to be had.
There was this little forum called picturewars.net
It started here on FP years ago, was pretty neat. I haven't followed it closely because I stopped having the time for it but iirc it turned to shit.
I want to play zm but there's nobody ever playing it
Its horrible, I miss when it was popular
Download zombie master reborn and log in on a sunday, I also have a thread for it going in the games forum and I post in it whenever i have time to organize a game
It's just zm but updated
My man.
Used to play on them all the time - even participated in every one of the robot wars that they would hold.

Oh god. They're all still up. The nostalgia.
When I was younger I was a full-fledged lego nerd so I was really active on MOCpages, and to a lesser extent, Flickr.
Towards the tail end of that I started hanging around car blog Jalopnik and its forum-esque section, Oppositelock. Had a Tinychat going with a few guys from there until it really dwindled down to just me and one other guy. Then Tinychat got a horrible redesign so we made a Discord. From time to time we arrange to both log on and catch up, but it's been months tbh. We do send one another the occasional text about relevant stuff however.
Zombie game mode for noxiousnet brings me back so much nostalgia. Damn that was fun
RuneHQ from like 2006 to 2009/2010. It's really sad how the site itself really fuckin went to shit, and for some reason me and a few friends really got under an admin's skin and he nuked any trace of us from the site for daring to enter the chat back in 2013. It was a bastion of that mid 2000s vibe, plus Runescape and yeah it had an IRC chat that was my only exposure to IRC in general and it was just great. Had good friends from there for years after it fell to shit. Worst part of randomly going back to check in on it was finding out the original founder or someone close to that passed away. But yeah from 2006 to 2009 that was the place. I didn't even play Runescape that much during my time there. Knew everything I needed to about it, but yeah focused on the community over the game. It's where I learned how to use Photoshop, how to do pixel shit in MsPaint, and a bunch of other stuff. But yeah then time passed, people from there went their ways, the friends I made outside and I parted ways after Skype really shit the bed and were kinda growing apart for years before that, and sadly before that, MSN dying. God I fuckin loved MSN Messenger. I know some fans basically brought it back, but I don't have contact with anyone that I talked to over it anymore so it'd be silly.
Back around 2007-ish, was part of a small community that did MS Paint Animations with Windows Movie Maker. The videos are probably long gone by now, but I remember thinking how cool it was to have people sharing their animations or other random videos with a live chat. So much dumb fun and tons of XD's. it was really disappointing when YT Streams and the small group we had started to break apart.

RIP youtube stream rooms
i still have a video on my old derelict YouTube channel of the time people were singing the ussr anthem together in fpuk. fond memories :')
Any fellow .:`=-~rANdOm~`-=:. members here in Facepunch?
We have a guaranteed full server every other sunday. We'll have one this sunday. Steam Community
There were a few little clans I was part of on Sven Coop back on WON, when all I ever wanted was to play with Entmod with other people and show off the houses I could build That would've been early 2004, maybe even early as 2002.
In case anyone remembers them, the clans were )X( (full of drama, didn't like the others really but I did it for the Entmod!!), -=[CSC]=- (Clan Sven Coop, very pure and good, great geocities website) and [FROG] (one that you join just by adding them to your name!! Had a server that was up on occasion.)
So my name would've been like -=[CSC]=- )X( Agent Cobra [FROG], what a fucking mouthful!!
One person in particular had a server called Epsilon Sigma, wasn't up very much, but I was so excited when it was. The owner was really fun, we'd spam fireworks from that one plugin all night on omg and omg2beta2. Like, it was a refuge from all the shit that life could throw at you.
I miss my old WoW raiding group. There were so many chill people there and we were able to always make time to go raiding mostly. Then later the game itself began to suck, and I told them that I was quitting after we were done with pandas. I still keep in touch with some close friends from there but most of them indeed did quit wow with pandas or draenor, and with the state of things as it is now, they're glad they didnt stick around.
Back in 2001-2006 ish there was a Swedish Harry Potter fansite (hogwarts.nu) with tons of little mini-games, friendly forums and such. It had some roleplaying elements, and they'd gimmicked a lot of your usual community features so a PM was an "owl" and so forth. You could have a dragon and go chasing the golden snitch for coins which you could buy things for your profile with (wands, dragon eggs, stuff like that). A common meme in the community was to have a "staircase" on your profile in ASCII form. It'd go on forever and have little texts to intersect like "Keep going down!" and "Almost at the bottom, phew", and once at the bottom there'd be a wholesome message or a joke or something.
They sadly had to shut down in 2006 due to copyright issues. Because they couldn't really monetize the site (Warner Brothers didn't like it, anyway), they couldn't afford to keep it running. At its peak it had over 700 000 active users, so you can imagine the outcry when it got shut down. The forum runners tried to salvage a bit by opening a replacement site called FeFo (FenixForum), but it didn't become nearly as popular and it died within just a year or so.
Good times.
Gosh, where do I begin?
I know it's easy to say people you met during TF2's heyday before the mass exodus, but I'll be specific and mention two communities: IntoxGaming had a surf server(s, eventually there would be a mic-spam server one and one with no mic-spammed allowed) and the people I met there around.. 2010? Were so funny and great to hang out with. I believe I started listening to more d'n'b thanks to the mic-spam server because one of the admins were really into Pendulum at the time and he'd play a couple of their songs on the micspam server. It felt so great surfing along to something like this
https://youtu.be/k-Xv0sKBMA8
while being outfitted as a ridiculous looking Heavy, crouched down and approaching team and enemy players, spamming that glorious "POOTIS." I believe the servers and the website shut down, or at the very least moved and the member count got a lot smaller. That admin who played d'n'b is still my friend, but he went off to join the Navy and is now married. Understandably we don't remain in contact too often.
The second community would be SourceOP's Arena server in TF2 during around the same time in 2010. Everybody was just so chill and relaxed, poking fun at each other without much drama. I remember there being this insanely good Spy player that frequented that server, I believe his name was =Spy= or something like that. I swear he could have been one of the best Spy players on TF2 at the time. One match, it was just me versus him left in arena_granary, a map I loathed. Now, this =Spy= has reached meme status over how good he is, so I thought I was a fucking goner as I too was playing Spy going against a pro at the class. After what I could swear were the longest, stressful 15 minutes in TF2 history and loads of DR deaths, I actually managed to kill him and the server went apeshit crazy. I was so proud of myself after that day. I'm not sure what happened afterwards, I think I either got tired of the main admin of SourceOP or my computer died, but I never went to a SourceOP server again sometime after 2012 for some reason.
Onward to Multi Theft Auto, which I always preferred over SA:MP because of LUA scripting, I found myself in a RP Server called Valhalla Gaming or something like that. After weeks, maybe months of grinding money as a fucking bus-driver and nobody wanting to interact with me because I a lowly civilian not in any legal (police, paramedics, news, firefighters, etc) or illegal (mafia, gangs, Russian mob, etc.) groups - I finally learned RP etiquette and how to make my actions seem actually interesting and how to have a character with.. character and a personality: I managed to land myself in this gang called Devil's Kings and it was a group full of mainly Europeans, my character being from England. I loved the drama that comes with being in a gang, and out-of-character the users were fucking funny and we'd screw around and try to make the other person laugh by doing a wacky animation in the background during a RP session. I believe the server shifted ownership and the new owner fucking sucked before the website, servers, and community died.
Finally: Facepunch about a decade ago was something else, and I was an annoying dumb kid that thought he was hot shit when all he was, was an unfunny "LOL SO RANDUMB XD" poster. But anyway, there used to be a GMod Comic Section here, back before SFM was a thing and people moved on to create worthwhile stuff. I made really shitty comics but the community there was great. I wish I could go back in time and slap the shit out of younger me for all the shit I pulled.
I do full time work and full time study, Sunday is my study day plus time differences to Aus
fp project reality, and all the bois i used to play with
The Best Gamers. Their videos were so ridiculous that it's hard to believe some people actually took them seriously. I especially miss their forums because shitposting was basically enforced and encourage. It was just insane, stupid fun.

back in 2016 i used to play on some css minigame server that i dont remember the name of. all i did there was just spammed lenny faces, im pretty sure the community hated me for that lmao. it shut down in like july 2016 though. i took very few screenshots of the server so i cant really look back at it. some mod shit talked me on the mic once, and later said he would give me "the pp touch".
also in 2016 there was this tf2 server called the cloudy moon resort. it was a server where it was against the rules to kill people. i dont know why i spent so much time on it lol. the people there were great too. there was this one guy who was on almost every night and when he joined, the server filled up. i donated to the server in july 2016, and totally didnt abuse my donor and get a few people to resent me there as a result. server shut down in october 2016, and honestly my life hasn't been the same since. i dont think any server ill ever play on will rival cmr.
Good times with this crew.

Granted, there's still a community, but the forums are gone and it's a completely new generation of kids.
That was 13 years ago...
Gives me flashbacks to a Slipknot fan forum I used to hang out on from around 2005 to maybe early 2007, I don't quite remember. Mods could get kinda savage but it mostly prevented bouts of shitposting so it was generally a cool place to hang.
So when the owner shut the place down with two weeks notice, it hurt. I don't quite remember why but I believe it had something to do with Roadrunner Records.
There was this tf2 server I frequented back when I played religiously it was the first one I saw close by so I joined. Spent a good 4 years meeting people shooting the breeze, all fun but sadly most of the people I knew unfriended me or we had differences but thinking back, I hope most of them are doing well.
I miss this clan / group I formed with another friend on a San Andreas Multiplayer server a little over 8 years ago. The server is still going strong and in one of the top 30 worldwide surprisingly even after all this time.
Played on that server for a few years and our group had about 30+ members at its peak, we dedicated ourselves to flying and taxiing people around the map on smaller planes, it was always entertaining having people sit and dance on top a plane whilst flying through the clouds, occasionally seeing someone flinging off the plane which never ceased to amuse.
We had members all over the world - East Asia, Europe, South America and the USA.
Eventually, the group eventually fell apart as core members including myself had to move on as we need to focus on real life issues like studies and jobs. Others took over the group and sadly it devolved into a generic gang, losing our true identity that made us unique in the server which 1000s play on.
I still keep in touch with a couple of them, but I hope all the others are doing well despite the differences we may have had at some points.
There were various alliances I was a part of when I "played" cybernations, lots of people I talked with often. Also had a group of people I got drawn into by a guy I knew on there. The group existed entirely on Skype and as we found out, Skype does not handle large groups well at all. I'm still in contact with a few people from both groups but I miss those Skype calls with like 20+ talking over each other. No idea what happened to a number of the people that were there and the founder killed themselves a little over a year ago.
