honestly I wouldn't argue with reddit being a contributing factor to the rise of extreme views of various political alignments in recent years, be it the alt-right or communists
yeah but we're not arguing it has a lot of niche communities (which isn't hard to have if you're a large website), we're saying the format it uses is awful as hell
i'm saying that a community of thousands of users for a particular niche (something FP does not have) can be even better than a small community like FP
you get the massive knowledge of a larger community that's eager to share it, and a format that better accommodates having tons of users
the non-linear way of starting comment chains works very well if you have tons of users trying to hold related but distinctly separate conversations
except it makes actually finding relevant comments in those threads nigh-impossible at times
and if the subreddit is too big the actual submissions start plummeting in quality on top of being an absolute joke to sift through if you're looking for anything in particular
not all threads get an equal chance
