Back when I was wee young shitposter in the early days of '07/'08 and team fortress 2 was just taking off, eventually facepunch decided a FP community server would be a good idea. And from there a second one and then the FPEU/UK servers because half the forum was playing tf2, and the other half was a mix of dead/banned/inactive and poor and irish. the FPUK server was what pulled me out of the hovel that was the Gmod section at the time and was my first true gaming community experience. Eventually I became a (presumably shit) admin over there and good times were had from update to update, comic to comic, holiday event to holiday even and hat after hat after hat after hat after hat after hat. The times of unsrs saturday and then the unsrs server (which was usually half an hour using console commands to build a heavy race course only for the server to crash once the gates opened up...) custom minigames like medieval mode (before vavle made it a real thing) and possibly the one decent thing I ever created where we would set one side to be melee only heavies, crank the fog up to black and thick as possible, the other side would be a single spy and be unaffected by fog, friendly fire was enabled and any heavy who died had to teamswitch and become a spy.. such memeories...
Eventually the servers broke down for various possibly Swedish reasons, the server having changed hands about five times at that point. Because most of us were good buddies in the mumble some people put some money on the table and kept it running, and thus we went from FPUKTF2 to the FPUK Refugee Camp or FPUKRFGC eventually abbreviated to just the FPRC... From there we kept an eye on tf2, got caught up in dota, played Monday night combat and Super Monday Night Combat, had a short affair with overwatch, played Rainbow Six Siege and many others... Recently, not last weeked but the weekend before, I actually visited many of them as ESL One Birmingham, some for the very first time IRL. I hope to keep these friends for life and it'll be sad when the place where it all started finally dies.
I've been shitposting here for 12 years now... it's funny to think that what got me started was being interested in Jeff Waynes war of the Worlds, finding "War of the Servers" learning what Gmod was and going from there...
I have also used up my years budget of ellipsis...
The transition to KO has hardly been the smoothest ride, especially when it comes to the grand finale. It may be befitting for the forum to end with some mod power-tripping and an irritating overflow of aloofness from both Garry & our green-name superiors, but that doesn't make it suck any less. Once you consider that, I think you can see now why people aren't left with a great image of what Knockout is, or is likely to become. I think people might've been more accepting if the whole process didn't feel like it had been organised by a capricious toddler.
