Deleting facepunch is losing facepunch. no matter what fantasy world where the transitions going to be perfect and everyone goes there. We didn’t even get that moving designs
shut down the forum leave a banner up for 6 months on forum.facepunch.com "hi, we've moved to knockout.chat, garry no longer wanted to manage a forum so the community blah blah blah blah"
Seems like a civil war has broken out of Facepunch.
We touched on that. I was hoping the unique approach to individualism (displaying all your cool shit) will draw people in. Beyond that, the core membership would provide a small income through Gold Membership subscriptions which in turn would be put back into the community to fund events, raffles, products, etc. We had some real pie in the sky thinking. I have plans in my head for individual groups, based around a thread, using integrated calendars to notify people about events like gaming meet ups, TV episode watch parties, etc. Discord could be integrated too. These groups could be based around individual games, TV shows, clans, common interests etc. I was also toying with the idea of it being a place where developers could come together and work on their projects. We could pool our knowledge through our contacts and help people through the whole Steam Greenlight / Steam Publishing stuff. Essentially being a small time publishing house. I just don't have the energy for this anymore though, I have plans for my main career that require less of an online presence and more focus.
We literally can't continue posting for extended periods of time on a half working website. There are serious exploits that will never be fixed and mod tools which simply do not work. If facepunch shutting down wasn't pressing enough, the fact that it is not and will never be finished should be. Tired of reading "well I can browse just fine it's not broken to me" posts that totally miss the point.
What do the exploits do then
sure let me publicly post more about unpatched exploits you're serious right
Yeah, talking about what exploits do/even the fact that they currently exist could get certain people going "oho" and digging in and causing another one of those "someone's account gets hacked and makes a forum wide announcement to steal everyone's logins" situations.
I respect your opinion, what do you think about the future of FP? this thread shows me the spirit of facepunch lives on. I feel bad immediately jumping back to fp after all the KO dev but in the end I would really love for fp to not die. Could the community help patch such exploits or no?
Damn this was a trip to read. It was fun learning how the sosig.exe gets made (HAHAHAHAHAHAH) On topic: i'll follow yall where you go! You all have pretty good selections in terms of what matters in global news, and funny memes, and you find good videos for me to share with my friends.
The history would be lost but not necessarily the spirit, sure we can ride this half-broken Forum into the ground but the Facepunch Forum is on the decline. Which in my view invalidates the angle of "Facepunch Studios will keep FP Forums alive" I have seen. FP and Garry have been at odds enough times which led to our current status quo. Picking the option that means the least amount of work to Garry in my book is the likeliest. The two big IFs are if Garry will truly return to work on FP and when he does, if he sticks with it. Trends of the past indicate no. Garry himself stated that he would be fine with a combo of a subreddit and a discord so make your judgements of that. So I'd much rather rescue what we have now and worry about potential growth problems later, we are at this moment still dependant on Garry's support and his whims if we carry on with FP. Someone who left us in that half-feature complete state to begin with. I'd much rather shift that to someone like Inacio that has shown actual effort and engagement for FP by making an adequate Plan B from scratch. Maybe the switch/split will weaken and therefore just accelerate the slow demise of FP right now, I don't have all the answers, no one does. KO would be a fresh start, a clean state, to start anew while still having the backing of one of the best communities I have know online as a vantage point to start from with a forum system, subforums and a mod team that isn't stagnant or at-least not as stagnant as FP right now. I just see it that Facepunch will fail and that Knockout can fail. Unless a Miracle happens to FP.
from what i've managed to piece together by the comments garry's made about open sourcing the forum and next steps my sense is the FP backend is one monolithic architecture. the majority of the forum exploits are really just exploits in FP backend, and no way for community to patch them without seeing proprietary FP stuff, and refactoring the monolithic architecture just for the ability for people to patch exploits on a forum he's admitted he's not actively developing wouldn't make sense
Then don’t expect me to account for them in my opinion if not even the danger of their results can be described. I’m willing to believe they exist but if you’re just pulling out “the exploits” it’s almost like a bogeyman. It’s not like I’m asking how to do them, just what the hell you're referring to when saying that. Simple matter is garry asked, we answered, some unrelated shit went down, my answer is the same. Forcing us to go doesn’t sound like a good idea
to answer your question about the future of FP as a community i really truly see the only way for the community as a whole to survive is to accept the move to knockout
Here's what you can expect as we release stuff. Here's a full discord channel so you know we mean business. More coming soon. Timeline as well. Would be obvious to note things said in the past don't necessarily reflect what we think now, as lots have changed. Day 07-08 of Apr 2019, Dates are important. Knockout Community - 💼business.html (tell me if this breaks btw)
The danger can be described: Refer to that post for a sizable list of reasons we cannot stay on the current system, one that cannot be fixed on front-ends means alone.
https://i.imgur.com/h2LMmQW.png there, happy. i can't tell you what it does without telling you how to do it
and yes it is pretty dumb to expect those exploits to actually be posted on the public forum
I’m not dismissing anything, but I guess saying I’m dumb as fuck for asking questions is good for deflecting backing it up.
and you have just been provided proof on the last page between hezzy chat logs as well as taliyah's post
You don't go saying "oh it's something to do with how the forum handles moderator tool inputs" or something. I am not a programmer, but this is just, common sense dude.
I'd like for facepunch to stick around if it's possible in some form. if not I guess I'll move to knockout proper? I dunno, I might take a break from posting. I really disagree calling the attempt a coup though
The outrage was a inside job I'm not against Knockout but these recent events are making me less optimistic. Knockout wont survive with shitty moderators that shouldve been demoted on facepunch years ago. Last I recall you made fun of another user's death after he commited suicide as some edgy faggy shit. Pretty much most of craptasket's posts are shitposts anyways straight out of oify.
and just to provide some insight, my speculation on whether or not these are resolvable (these are just my opinions and do not represent the objective truth, just a guess of the situation and how things interact) Several posting exploits exist that can and will end this thread prematurely and prevent people from posting normally. definitely not fixable with the solution garry provides Unbanning a user normally doesn't work, you have to use a hotfix. we'll call this one up in the air, maybe a bug with front end, maybe an issue with backend Report weighting(yes this is a thing btw) does not work. probably backend issue Deleting yourself causes major issues such as threads being gone and ghost pages being left. There are several ghost pages in the last few Forum Discussion threads as an example. It's also leaving quotes behind with your username(BIG OOPS) so this may actually be some trouble. Hot fix btw. Just scramble the username. Like we USED to do on vB. ghost pages could potentially be resolved via front end, but deleting mechanic is probably tied into backend, so no easy resolution We cannot edit thread titles. You as a user on vB had 2 minutes to fix the title yourself otherwise it would prevent you. Moderators could do it whenever. maybe fixable in front end Moderators can't move posts(this was real handy because then we could swap OPs). maybe fixable in front end? Moderator UI sucks. obviously front-end only No fast and quick way to check bans or events on users. You actually have to dive into their profile. obviously front end only so of the bugs listed, 2 of them i can safely assume could be fixed with a new client, but those are minor. everything earth shattering is a tossup between fixable or not
If it’s too dangerous to have reputable sources confirm there are urgent exploits because then people know there are exploits why are we bringing them up as a point in the first place?
because the people that currently know how to exploit them have been told don't fuck up but the more we discuss them the more curious people get?
okay we should stop then
yes
The wiki's broken as fuck, at this point we have no way to fix it short of a nuking and fresh restart
ko is still going to lose a vast number of users during the switch with nothing to attract new users. either way you look at it, once FP is down FP is dead What is left will be something different entirely continually grasping for breath
