Should have modded me years ago tbh
Joined 11 years ago and FP has been the website I visit daily. I don't really care about functionalities aside from maybe fixing the screenshaking embeds - it's more about the community of people and what we post/talk about, the URL is irrelevant.
how about everyone stop fretting over when and just enjoy the now https://thumbs.gfycat.com/HarshConstantGartersnake-size_restricted.gif
I stickied the thread.
I'd much much rather Facepunch stick around as it always has.
mod me
Personal opinion that I'm posting here instead of at Knockout because I feel like more people interested in both will speak here for a variety of reasons: Knockout would be a lot more inviting if it didn't have a dark theme by default and wasn't trying to be different in terms of how the main page is organized. It's fine to have a dark theme, but it can be intimidating or foreboding to people used to a site that has a default of light colors for it to be the base aesthetic. If you clone the site more directly in terms of organization instead of what feels like a tackboard of stickies with guidelines on filing, I think you'll have a much easier time getting people to make the transition. No need to reinvent the wheel.
I dunno, I'm glad a site finally had default dark to save my eyes, a lot of UI's could learn from that. KO's default theme at least makes sense and the UI is an improvement at being developed on multiple fronts.
Assuming there are a significant amount of people using OLED screens on mobile devices, dark default themes could globally save electricity. Besides the saving the environment, dark themes are a lot easier on the eyes, I have to use f.lux so white websites don't sear my retinas at night. Discord has a dark theme and lots of people here are using that anyways.
This is factually untrue. A theme that suits the lighting in the room you are viewing it in is easier on the eyes. Having a theme that is brighter or darker than the ambient light in the room will increase eyestrain regardless of which direction you're going. It's like stating that walking around in the middle of the night is easier on your eyes. It's simply not actually the case and in many cases it's harder on your eyes and makes things more difficult to see. And if you're suddenly exposed to something even moderately brighter than that light then it will cause eyestrain.
Bring back the tan forums from 2004
25 pages later it doesn't really seem like anyone got the subtext here i don't think garry was really asking if he should keep the forums open
But seriously, Facepunch shutting down will fuck me up. I joined these forums at like, age 9. It's so routine for me to browse here it's not even funny. Even if we all migrate, it will never be the same.
I'm going to reiterate what a lot of people have already said in this thread, but here are my two cents. It's pretty clear that FP is not going anywhere. Ever since the move from Oldpunch, it's been a rough ride. But now it's all but stagnant. By all means, I would love if the current issues with the forums got fixed and the development started again, but as I've gathered from, what, a year of silence from Garry, it's not happening. Open-sourcing or opening the front-end is a very optimistic outlook, and it would be great too, but I don't think that's happening either. I think the community here is neat, and it would be a shame to see it dissolve. And if it comes to that, yes, I will move to Knockout, because it seems like the only valid option for now. But until then, I'm going to stay here until the forums die in one way or another, as much as my lurking ass can contribute. Love y'all.
What the hell I'd like to know is how to proceed. @garry There isn't a clear consensus here, there are good arguments on both sides and all we can offer is some likely scenarios oh how all this may play out. FP will most certainly decline unless against all odds we get a miracle. A move to Knockout will certainly split community even further though you making the Knockout unofficial official successor in-case you actually pull the plug would certainly help with every person either moving or leaving it all instead of a three-way split of also staying on FP like we effectively have now. Would you still be interested in the opensource frontend & Facepunch backend approach considering that is time to be invested on your end? Do you want this chapter of the Forums sponsored by Facepunch to end and hand them over? What is your motivation and end-goal in all this, some input and feedback from the man himself would help things along, hopefully this thread wasn't just fudging a stick into a hornets nest and leaving us in a an elevated agitated sense of limbo. I don't expect you to read the 25 pages of this, we unearthed some ugly stuff in the process that the community can all talk through in due time but it ultimately isn't productive to a next-step procedure of what the hell to do next. We are all here, because of your past-and-present efforts, your hosting of these forums and in the realm of your Facepunch Studios, most of us are very grateful for but for a clean cut (or whatever else that is decided on) I'm afraid we also need some engagement from your part.

That all doesn't matter if Garry actually wants to shut it down and the disagree ratings don't go into detail about what exactly people are in denial, the process or the end result (of which both can still be influenced by garry) Let's not make the same mistake like Brexit and paint this as white and black when it really is more shades of grey. What options does Garry prefer and/or offer and on what is the consensus of the user collective and also the mod team. There is some nuance we shouldn't just trample over.
How much you wanna bet this is completely ignored?
little did people know that garry linked the ratings to randomly vac ban people from gmod
"Should I shut down the forum" "NO" Where's the nuance? The answer from the community is no
Oh I can personally agree with this, dark modes are just really depressing to me so I'd much rather just have this site kept running
Like I said, Garry has still a say in this. I'd recommend reading my post again without the "knockout" lense and get what I actually mean. I'd much rather stay on FP with Garry maintaining and expanding it or even just keeping it running. But this isn't the make-a-wish foundation, depending on what Garry does, Knockout may be our only choice left. And in all fairness, considering Garry's and FP's track record, to me it seems the most likely option of what will end up going down is Knockout.
i'm not sure if i should leak mod chat but uh, this might matter less than we'd expect
did all of the mods end up being garry impersonating different people the entire time with you being the only real one?
I mean, you expect Garry to listen? I really don't even know why he bothered to make the thread. Unless he suddenly has a change of heart and starts taking care of this place.
i'm not real either, i'm flak's alt
that would mean that knockout is actually made by garry also.
can garry just stop cunting about and fucking make his mind up
