you need to actually hover your mouse over it for a few secs before it becomes clear.
Yeah, I think it works fine. It isn't instantaneous by any means.

As cool as the whole fading avatar background stuff is- and it IS pretty damn cool- part of me wishes you could just pick and avatar the size of the background and not have it be transparent.
