There's this forum I sometimes post on called Facepunch that has a nice design, I don't think you'd have heard of it but maybe we could take some cues from that.
No need to be a dick about it.
How about you say what you like and not just bitch that it's not a exact clone.
I'm gonna miss having the FP logo in the top bar
It was meant to be a joke, not spite. Okay, but I avoided it to begin with because it's going to sound like a lot of nitpicking since I prefer nearly everything about old Facepunch and it's not what Garry wants to hear when the whole point is to get away from that design even if I'm saying it because I think that Facepunch is the best-looking forum I can think of.. Plus it's awkward to complain about obviously WIP elements, but here goes. I think the lighter grey and stripes at the bottom of the page looks better than a block of dark grey, and placing thread/subforrum names on this block of grey doesn't look as nice as the logo tile on Oldpunch. It could use a better font choice too. I think the block of grey that contains the post number and "posted x minutes ago" between posts aesthetically improves the look of the posts and helps break things up and look less like a mountain of white. The noise filter just makes my screen look dirty and I don't really understand why it's there. The thick outline/vector emotes look tacky and cheap. Overall the UI is extremely pale and white whereas the old one didn't feel like there was a ton of empty space. It wouldn't hurt to reintroduce a bit of the red to the design. The avatar space is pretty lonely without its extra elements but that's obviously not done. Emotes as thread icons also looks worse but that's also probably a placeholder. A lot of the design is geared towards mobile, and Newpunch does look fine on mobile, but it's uglier on desktop as a result. Overall it feels very bare, and I think that Facepunch Droid showed that the old layout transitioned to mobile just fine. I'm going to apologise in advance for how much of this post is complaining about elements that were already on the list of things to be changed. If I had to pick one element from old Facepunch that I would like to see trialed on Newpunch to see what people prefer, it would be the grey bar between posts
the noise/grain overlay on the rust blog overlays images and videos. is this intended?
The overlay covers everything on everything. I like it because it makes my screen feel less dirty.
well, I want the see the contents of a video without a bunch of noise/grain
You can always open it in a new tab until Garry changes it (if he ever does). One thing I've noticed is it's way less noticeable on monitors with high pixel density like phone screens or my retina MacBook Pro.
for now you can add this to the custom css style box in your user setting. #content:after { background-image: none; }
The new forums look awesome, but I think we should have a user contest at some point to design new icon sets like the ratings, thread icons, emotes etc as I don't think they quite suit the aesthetic. Would be a nice way to get the community involved and give the forum a more unique and personal touch
I think it should use space better but I think that's been raised already. Less space at the sides would go a long long way to making it look better imo. Also sorry if it's been asked 100x but are the custom forums and css from ognewpunch expected to return?
This new theme is most soothing on my dessicated eyes.
Hmmm I'm assuming that everyone got the dark theme, yes? It's gonna take a while to get used to the rose color.
Very colorful.
it's like a night theme for nights out on the town with lots of glowing neon and souvlakis
Some color change for the category separator?
the colours are changing as we speak, the forum is having an identity crisis
Oh HEY WAIT A MINUTE, the dominant color changes every once in a while!
I like this new dark theme, might be a good idea to give people the option of the colourscheme they want though Perhaps you could give people the option of custom colours for UI elements in settings that's not done by CSS
Rose dark theme looks pretty nice, I'm down for having a potential variety of UI colours to pick from.
🤔 Have a bunch of options on the settings page for colour schemes, CSS variables help massively when doing shit like this. Since it's clientside, you don't have to compile them too. (and they work fine in JS)
The Awfully Dark theme also used variable names so people could customize them on their own. that would be really sweet to have that without a custom theme.
spoilers don't work in quotes by the looks of it
Is the button that is supposed to take you to the "new/unread" posts of a thread working for anyone else? For me, it simply takes me to the top of the page. And I'd like it if there was a button/way to take us to the last post of a thread, even if it wasn't "read" yet.
I know it would be more of a pain but I would love it if in the settings page we could pick our own colour or theme from a preset few. I hate to be that guy but I prefer lighter themes even though darker themes are easier on the eyes when your tired. It's dark and dreary enough here in the UK without the forums being as well. I will get used to a dark theme given a few weeks anyway but I know from previous experience of having dark and light desktop backgrounds I tend to have a more positive mood if I have a lighter and more colourfull background.
Fully agreed on this. I don't prefer overly bright themes but neutral or somewhat light rather than dark ones are better. Going from a dark site to a light site is really freaking harsh on the eyes.
Just noticed that if you post when a page is full of posts (i.e. your post goes to the next page), when the thread reloads to show your post, it doesn't redirect to the next page.
i'm loving this slick af new colour scheme garebear, very pleasing to the eyes. not a huge fan of how big the section icons are though, but it still looks nice. the top bars could probably be condensed a bit more? Clicking 'Forum' and the 'Home' icon both link to the same thing essentially. Could you move the event log button and home button to the top blue bar (therefore eliminating bottom blue bar) and make the black bar shorter? one of my favourite design aspects of OldPunch is how many of the 'controls' are located very close to one another From one bar you can access event log, popular threads, read threads, you can search, access ticker, and so on as well as read PM's and access user control panel, as well as view your own profile.
Really liking the new colour palette, lot better than the one I quickly threw together for the old site that you said was ugly Garry.
