More than likely he was doing absolutely nothing with it. Cars that sit idle during the timespan where wasps build nests will attract thousands of the motherfuckers, since nooks and crannies in the doors and mirrors make excellent places for wasps to nest. Continued disuse means the wasps are never driven away, and hey presto you've got a waspmobile. Chances are your car sat unused for a year or two near an existing wasp nest.
